What Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its well-known identity as a named diazo base in the colourant industry, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline — 4-chloro-2-nitroaniline — carries a chlorine para to the amino group and a nitro group ortho to it. This is one of the better-known chloronitroaniline diazo components in the colourant trade: it is widely sold and specified under its trade designation PCONA, and carries the formal Colour Index identity C.I. Azoic Diazo Component 9, with Fast Red 3GL Base as a common commercial synonym. The ortho-nitro group both deactivates the amine toward basic reactivity and, once diazotized, stabilizes the resulting diazonium salt, which is part of why this particular isomer became a standard in azoic pigment manufacture.

At room temperature it is a bright orange crystalline solid, only sparingly soluble in water but soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and ethanol.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

As C.I. Azoic Diazo Component 9, this compound is diazotized and coupled with a naphthol AS-type coupler to build "Fast Red" and related azoic colourants used in textile printing and pigment manufacture. The same scaffold is also used as a pharmaceutical intermediate in routes that call for this specific chloro-nitro substitution pattern.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial dye and pigment manufacture, and high-purity grade (99%+) for applications sensitive to isomer carryover or colour body. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis so your incoming QC team can verify the parameters you ordered against.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline is manufactured from para-chloroaniline (or an equivalent chloronitrobenzene precursor) by controlled ring nitration that installs a nitro group ortho to the existing amino or amino-precursor substituent, or alternatively from a dichloronitrobenzene by selective ammonolysis of the chlorine para to the nitro group, which is strongly activated toward nucleophilic displacement by that nitro substituent.

Where nitration of para-chloroaniline is used, the amine is first protected (commonly by acetylation) to moderate the ring's reactivity and direct nitration cleanly to the position ortho to nitrogen, after which the amide is hydrolyzed back to the free amine. Where the ammonolysis route is used instead, a dichloronitrobenzene precursor reacts with aqueous or gaseous ammonia under pressure, displacing only the activated chlorine and leaving the nitro group and the second (less activated) chlorine or hydrogen untouched as designed.

After the key step, the crude product is washed, recrystallized and dried to remove unreacted starting material, regiochemical by-products and process salts before packing. This recrystallization is where technical grade and high-purity grade material part ways, and is also what sets the product's characteristic bright orange colour.

Why this isomer became an industry standard

The combination of an ortho-nitro group (which stabilizes the diazonium salt once formed) and a para-chlorine (which has limited further reactivity under coupling conditions) gives this particular substitution pattern good manufacturing robustness and a consistent, well-characterized shade when coupled — which is why it was adopted early as a named Colour Index diazo component and remains a standard reference material in the azoic dye trade.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline is consumed almost entirely in azoic colourant manufacture, with secondary volumes going into pharmaceutical synthesis. The fields below account for most of the global demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Azoic Dyes & Pigments (Fast Red Base)

As C.I. Azoic Diazo Component 9, it is diazotized and coupled with naphthol AS-type couplers to build Fast Red-type azoic colourants used in textile printing and pigment manufacture.

Field 02

Pharmaceutical Intermediates

Used as a chloro-nitroaniline building block in pharmaceutical synthesis routes that call for this specific substitution pattern.

Field 03

Fine Chemical Synthesis

A starting material for further nitro- and amino-substituted aromatic intermediates used across process and research chemistry.

Field 04

Specialty Colourant Intermediates

Carried forward into other azoic and pigment chemistries where the para-chloro, ortho-nitro substitution pattern is part of the target structure.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The ortho-nitro group strongly deactivates the amino group toward basic reactivity but stabilizes the diazonium salt once formed, which is exactly the balance that makes this compound a standard azoic diazo component.

Diazotization (Diazo Component Use)

Under the stronger acid conditions used industrially for weakly basic nitroanilines, the amino group is converted to a diazonium salt, stabilized by the adjacent ortho-nitro group — the entry point for Fast Red-type azoic colourant manufacture.

Azo Coupling

The diazonium salt is coupled with a naphthol AS-type coupler to form the azo (–N=N–) chromophore that gives the finished colourant its characteristic red shade.

Acylation

Reaction with an acid chloride or anhydride gives an amide, used in pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis routes built on this scaffold.

Nitro Group Reduction

Catalytic or chemical reduction of the nitro group gives the corresponding diamine, a route used to access further dye, rubber-chemical and pharmaceutical intermediates.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Fatal if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled.

H315

Causes skin irritation.

H319

Causes serious eye irritation.

H341

Suspected of causing genetic defects.

H373

May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.

Handling Note

Significantly more acutely toxic than many chloronitroanilines — treat as a high-hazard material by default.

Signal word

Danger — GHS06 toxic, GHS08 health hazard and GHS09 environmental pictograms commonly apply.

This grade carries a notably severe acute-toxicity classification. Use impervious gloves, full eye/face protection, and respiratory protection sized to the task; avoid any skin contact and work under local exhaust ventilation. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, ambient
ContainerOriginal sealed drum / bag
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
