Piperidine
The six-membered saturated cyclic amine supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a versatile pharmaceutical and rubber-chemical building block and a widely used organic base and solvent — exported from Indonesia as a liquid in drums with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Piperidine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its role as a core saturated-ring secondary amine, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Piperidine is the fully saturated six-membered ring analogue of pyridine: a cyclohexane ring with one carbon replaced by a secondary amine nitrogen. That nitrogen is a strong, freely available base and nucleophile, making the ring an exceptionally common structural motif and reagent throughout organic and pharmaceutical chemistry.
At room temperature it is a colourless, hygroscopic liquid with a strong, penetrating amine odour, fully miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is a stronger base than many open-chain secondary amines and is handled with the flammability and corrosivity precautions typical of reactive low-molecular-weight amines.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
Piperidine is both a finished-reagent base/solvent for organic synthesis and, more importantly, a core structural building block: the piperidine ring appears in a very large share of pharmaceutical active ingredients, and the free amine itself is used directly as a rubber vulcanisation accelerator intermediate and as a corrosion inhibitor in metal pickling and acidising operations.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Piperidine in technical grade (≈99% assay) for rubber-chemical and industrial-intermediate use, and high-purity grade (99.5%+) for pharmaceutical building-block applications sensitive to colour and trace-impurity content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How Piperidine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Piperidine is manufactured industrially by catalytic hydrogenation of pyridine: the aromatic ring is fully saturated under hydrogen pressure over a metal catalyst such as nickel, cobalt, platinum or palladium, typically in the liquid phase: C₅H₅N + 3 H₂ → C₅H₁₁N. The crude product is purified by fractional distillation to the required assay and colour specification before packing.
Why pyridine hydrogenation is the standard route
Pyridine is produced at large scale from coal-tar processing and from acetaldehyde/formaldehyde-ammonia synthesis for other downstream uses, making catalytic ring hydrogenation of pyridine the most direct, well-controlled and widely practised industrial route to piperidine.
Industries and processes that use it
Piperidine is consumed across pharmaceutical building-block synthesis, rubber-chemical manufacture and general organic chemistry, where its secondary ring amine is a widely used base and nucleophile. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Pharmaceutical Building Block
A core structural motif used directly or as an intermediate across a wide range of active-pharmaceutical-ingredient synthesis routes.
Rubber Vulcanisation Accelerator Intermediate
Converted into piperidine-based dithiocarbamate and sulfenamide accelerators used in rubber compounding.
Organic Base & Catalyst
Used directly as a strong secondary-amine base and nucleophilic catalyst in condensation reactions such as the Knoevenagel reaction.
Corrosion Inhibitor Component
Used in formulated corrosion inhibitors for acid pickling, well acidising and metal-cleaning operations.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The single, unhindered secondary amine nitrogen on the saturated ring governs almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways Piperidine is converted into a finished product or intermediate.
N-Acylation & N-Alkylation
The ring nitrogen reacts readily with acyl chlorides, anhydrides and alkyl halides, the core step in building most piperidine-containing pharmaceutical intermediates.
Dithiocarbamate Formation
Reaction with carbon disulfide and a metal salt gives piperidinium pentamethylenedithiocarbamate salts used as rubber accelerators.
Knoevenagel & Mannich Condensation
Acts as a base/catalyst in carbonyl condensation reactions, a classic use in fine-chemical and fragrance synthesis.
Salt Formation
Forms stable, crystalline salts with mineral and organic acids, often used to purify or formulate downstream pharmaceutical intermediates.
Piperidine against other amines we supply
Buyers sourcing Piperidine for pharmaceutical or rubber-chemical synthesis often need a related cyclic amine with a different ring composition. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.
| Product | CAS Number | Category | Notes |

| Piperidine | 110-89-4 | Saturated cyclic amine | The product on this page — a core pharmaceutical and rubber-chemical building block. |
| Piperazine | 110-85-0 | Cyclic diamine | A related cyclic diamine with a second ring nitrogen — see its product page. |
| Morpholine | 110-91-8 | Oxygen-containing cyclic amine | A related saturated ring amine with an oxygen in the ring — see its product page. |
| N-Methylmorpholine | 109-02-4 | Tertiary cyclic amine | A related N-methylated cyclic amine used as a catalyst and base — see its product page. |
Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than Piperidine.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
Toxic if swallowed.
Toxic in contact with skin.
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
Impervious gloves, chemical splash goggles or a face shield, and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.
Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame; ground and bond containers during transfer given the low flash point.
Use only with adequate ventilation or suitable respiratory protection — vapour is toxic by inhalation.
Danger — GHS02 flammable, GHS05 corrosive and GHS06 toxic pictograms apply.
This compound is a highly flammable liquid that is toxic if swallowed or in contact with skin, and causes severe skin burns and eye damage. It must be handled with impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection, suitable respiratory protection and kept away from heat and open flame. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, strong oxidizing agents and strong acids, in tightly closed original packaging. As the product is both flammable and hygroscopic, minimise exposure to ignition sources and humid air during transfer. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay, colour and water content before use.
