What 3,4-Dichloroaniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

3,4-Dichloroaniline carries its chlorines meta and para to the amino group, leaving the nitrogen completely unhindered. That accessibility is the whole commercial story: the amine acylates cleanly, converts cleanly to the isocyanate, and does both at the scale and yield that high-tonnage herbicide manufacture requires. Where 2,6- is the isomer defined by what it resists, 3,4- is the one defined by how readily it reacts.

At room temperature it is a crystalline solid with a melting range of roughly 69–72 °C — the highest of the commercially traded isomers, and high enough that it stays a free-flowing solid through tropical transit without the melt-handling complications its 2,5- and 2,6- siblings bring. Pure material is white to light yellow; commercial grades are typically grey to light brown. It is practically insoluble in water at around 92 mg/L at 20 °C and dissolves in ethanol, acetone and other common organic solvents.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

This isomer is used exclusively as a chemical intermediate, and it feeds the largest-tonnage downstream chain of any dichloroaniline. Through 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate it becomes the phenylurea herbicides diuron, linuron and neburon. Acylated directly with propionyl chloride or propionic anhydride it becomes propanil, the anilide herbicide used at very large scale in rice. It also supplies the fungicide diethofencarb, the antimalarial chlorproguanil, the antibacterial triclocarban, and the 3,4-dichlorophenyl diazo component of disperse dyes for polyester.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers 3,4-Dichloroaniline in technical grade (around 98% assay) for bulk herbicide synthesis and high-purity grade (99%+) where isomer carryover or trace metals matter. Both ship with a batch-wise certificate of analysis. For buyers running continuous acylation or isocyanate plant, consistency between batches usually matters more than a higher headline assay figure — tell our desk the tolerance band your process holds and we will quote against it.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How 3,4-Dichloroaniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Commercial 3,4-dichloroaniline is made by catalytic hydrogenation of 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene over precious-metal catalysts under pressure. The reaction is well established at large scale, which is part of why this isomer is the cheapest and most available of the family. The controlling concern is the same hydrodechlorination risk as elsewhere in the family: conditions that reduce the nitro group too hard also begin removing ring chlorine, producing mono-chloroaniline that carries forward into the herbicide product.

Iron and dilute acid reduction of the Béchamp type remains documented and is still used in some plants. It avoids pressurised hydrogen equipment at the cost of an iron sludge stream that has to be separated, dewatered and disposed of, so most current tonnage comes from catalytic hydrogenation.

After reduction the crude amine is washed and purified by vacuum distillation or recrystallisation to remove unreacted nitro compound, isomeric by-products and trace catalyst metal before drying and packing. The higher melting point makes this isomer the most straightforward of the family to isolate, dry and pack as a free-flowing solid.

Why isomer purity is set at the nitration stage

3,4-Dichloronitrobenzene comes from the nitration of 1,2-dichlorobenzene, and that step decides where the nitro group sits relative to the two chlorines. The substitution pattern is fixed upstream and cannot be corrected downstream, which is why the six isomers come from six distinct manufacturing streams. It is also worth noting that 3,4-DCA can form microbiologically from 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene in industrial wastewater, which is relevant to effluent monitoring at sites handling either compound.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

3,4-Dichloroaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Phenylurea Herbicides

Via 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate to diuron, linuron and neburon — the largest-tonnage outlet for any dichloroaniline isomer.

Field 02

Propanil & Anilides

Acylated directly with propionyl chloride or propionic anhydride to give propanil, the anilide herbicide used at scale in rice.

Field 03

Pharmaceuticals & Antibacterials

A building block for the antimalarial chlorproguanil and the antibacterial triclocarban, among other actives.

Field 04

Disperse Dyes

The 3,4-dichlorophenyl diazo component is a standard building block for disperse azo dyes used on polyester.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

With both chlorines away from the amino group, the nitrogen is fully accessible. The reactions below are the ones the herbicide chain is built on, and they run cleanly here in a way they do not for the hindered isomers.

Acylation

Reaction with propionyl chloride or propionic anhydride converts the amine straight to the anilide. This single step is the propanil route, and its directness is why the 3,4- pattern dominates anilide herbicide manufacture.

Isocyanate Formation

Treatment with phosgene or a phosgene equivalent gives 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate, the gateway to the phenylurea family.

Urea Formation

The isocyanate is condensed with dimethylamine or methoxy-methylamine to build diuron and linuron respectively.

Diazotization and Coupling

Converted to the diazonium salt below 5 °C and coupled with an electron-rich partner to build the azo chromophore of a disperse dye.

Carbamate Formation

Reaction with alkoxides and related reagents gives carbamate structures, the route to the fungicide diethofencarb.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

3,4-Dichloroaniline against its near relatives

The six dichloroaniline isomers share a formula but not a market. 3,4- is the volume leader, because the phenylurea and anilide herbicide families that dominate the market need exactly this substitution pattern.

Signal word

Danger — GHS05 corrosive, GHS06 toxic and GHS09 environment pictograms apply.

Unlike most of the family, this substance carries a legally binding harmonised classification in Annex VI to CLP (Index number 612-202-00-1), which takes precedence over supplier self-classification in the EU. Some sources additionally report organ damage on repeated exposure, and methaemoglobin formation is documented. Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection and adequate ventilation, and keep it out of drains and waterways. Transport is UN 1590, Class 6.1, Packing Group II, marine pollutant.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, ambient
ContainerOriginal sealed drum / bag
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
Keep Away FromOxidizers, strong acids, water ingress
Beyond Shelf LifeRe-assay and re-check moisture

Store in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing and acidic materials. At a melting range of 69–72 °C this is the most straightforward isomer of the family to warehouse — it stays a free-flowing solid through normal tropical storage and does not need temperature control beyond keeping it out of direct sun. Reseal opened containers promptly: moisture pickup matters more here than for most grades, because the isocyanate and acyl chloride routes downstream are destroyed by water.

The other isomers serve pigments, dicamba's phenol route or pharmaceuticals dosed in milligrams.
06Does this grade have a harmonised EU classification?+
Yes, and it is the only one of the common dichloroanilines that does. It appears in Annex VI to CLP under Index number 612-202-00-1, with acute toxicity by all three routes, serious eye damage, skin sensitisation and aquatic toxicity. That harmonised entry is binding in the EU and overrides supplier self-classification, so EU customers should expect it on every compliant SDS.
