01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What 2,4-Dichloroaniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

2,4-Dichloroaniline is a chlorinated derivative of aniline in which chlorine atoms occupy the 2- and 4- positions of the benzene ring relative to the amino group. It is one of six possible dichloroaniline isomers, and among the more commercially significant, valued for the reactivity its amino group retains after chlorination — it still undergoes acylation, diazotization and coupling reactions typical of primary aromatic amines, while the two chlorine substituents shape the electronic character of the ring for downstream synthesis.

At room temperature it is a crystalline solid, pale beige to tan in color, with a melting range of roughly 59–62 °C. It is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves readily in common organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone and benzene, which is consistent with its moderate log P value and typical of chlorinated aniline intermediates generally.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

2,4-Dichloroaniline rarely reaches an end product directly. Its role is almost always that of an intermediate: a building block that is further reacted — acylated, diazotized, or coupled — to construct the active molecule in a crop-protection product, an azo dye, a pigment, or a specialty chemical. Buyers typically specify it against a downstream process, which is why purity, isomer ratio and moisture content matter as much as the bulk assay figure.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers 2,4-Dichloroaniline in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99%+) for applications sensitive to isomer carryover or trace metal content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis so your incoming QC team can verify the parameters you ordered against.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How 2,4-Dichloroaniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Commercial-scale 2,4-dichloroaniline is produced almost exclusively by the catalytic reduction of 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene. The nitro group is converted to the amine while the two ring chlorines are left untouched, which is why the choice of catalyst, hydrogen pressure and reaction temperature is controlled carefully — conditions aggressive enough to reduce the nitro group too efficiently can also strip chlorine from the ring, a side reaction known as hydrodechlorination that manufacturers work to minimise.

An older route reduces the nitro compound chemically, using iron and dilute acid (a Béchamp-type reduction) rather than a metal catalyst and hydrogen gas. It avoids pressurised hydrogenation equipment but produces an iron sludge by-product that has to be separated and handled, so most of the volume in the market today comes from catalytic hydrogenation plants instead.

After reduction, the crude amine is washed, and in most processes vacuum-distilled or recrystallised to remove unreacted starting material, isomeric by-products and trace catalyst metals before it is dried and packed. This purification step is where technical grade and high-purity grade material part ways — the high-purity stream is cut and re-processed more tightly to hold isomer carryover and metal content to a lower ceiling.

Why the starting nitro compound matters

2,4-Dichloronitrobenzene is itself made by nitrating 1,3-dichlorobenzene, and the nitration step fixes where the chlorines end up relative to the eventual amino group. This is also why the six dichloroaniline isomers are sourced from six distinct manufacturing streams rather than separated from one shared batch — isomer purity is set upstream, at the nitration stage, not corrected afterwards.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

2,4-Dichloroaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the global demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Crop Protection

A key intermediate in the manufacture of herbicides and other agrochemical active ingredients, reached through diazotization and coupling steps.

Field 02

Dyes & Pigments

Used in azo dye and pigment-intermediate production, where the amino group is diazotized and coupled to build chromophore structures.

Field 03

Pharmaceuticals & Fine Chemicals

Serves as a building block in pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis routes that call for a chlorinated aniline core.

Field 04

Specialty & Chlorinated Aromatics

A starting material for further chlorinated aromatic compounds used across process and research chemistry.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The primary amine is the reactive handle. Three reaction classes account for most of the ways 2,4-Dichloroaniline is converted into a finished intermediate downstream.

Diazotization

Reaction of the amino group with nitrous acid (generated in situ from sodium nitrite and a mineral acid, typically below 5 °C) converts the amine into a diazonium salt — the entry point for azo-coupling and for Sandmeyer-type substitution chemistry.

Azo Coupling

The diazonium intermediate is coupled with an electron-rich aromatic partner to build the azo (–N=N–) linkage that forms the chromophore core of many dye and pigment structures.

Acylation

Reaction with an acid chloride or anhydride converts the amine to an amide, a common step in building the active-ingredient scaffold of agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediates.

Further Substitution

Under more forcing conditions, the diazonium salt can be used in Sandmeyer-type reactions to introduce other substituents onto the ring in place of the amino group.

Selective Dehalogenation

Catalytic hydrogenation under controlled conditions can remove one or both ring chlorines, a route occasionally used to access related mono-chloro or unsubstituted aniline targets from the same starting intermediate.

05 / ISOMER COMPARISON

2,4- against the other dichloroaniline isomers

The six dichloroaniline isomers share a formula but not a market. Positioning the chlorines differently changes reactivity, melting behaviour and which downstream industry actually buys each one. A quick reference for specifying the right isomer.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, ambient
ContainerOriginal sealed drum / bag
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
Keep Away FromOxidizers, strong acids
Beyond Shelf LifeRe-assay before use

Store in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing and acidic materials. Once a container is opened, reseal it promptly to limit moisture pickup, which can affect both the measured assay and the material's flow and handling characteristics. If a batch is held past its retest date, we recommend re-checking assay and moisture before it goes into a process.
