2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene
A dichlorinated nitroaromatic intermediate supplied by Chelora Chemicals — the characteristic nitration product of 1,4-dichlorobenzene, and a reliable route into 2,5-dichloroaniline chemistry for dye and agrochemical manufacture — exported from Indonesia with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, how it arises as the main product of 1,4-dichlorobenzene nitration, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is a benzene ring carrying chlorine atoms at the 1 and 4 positions and a nitro group at position 2, directly between the ring position and one of the chlorines (hence also named 1,4-dichloro-2-nitrobenzene). It forms as the characteristic product when 1,4-dichlorobenzene, which has its two chlorines symmetrically opposite each other, is nitrated: both chlorines direct the incoming nitro group to the same, equivalent ortho position relative to themselves, giving this isomer cleanly as the dominant product rather than as one of several competing isomers.
At room temperature it is supplied as yellow flakes. It is practically insoluble in water but dissolves in common organic solvents, and like other nitroaromatics is handled as a toxic material under full MSDS guidance rather than a benign commodity solid.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
Reduction of the nitro group gives 2,5-dichloroaniline, a widely used dye and agrochemical intermediate; it is also a recognised starting material in some herbicide and fungicide intermediate chemistry, where the symmetric 1,4-dichloro pattern on the finished aniline is specifically required. Because the parent dichlorobenzene nitration is comparatively selective for this isomer, commercial volumes of 2,5-dichloronitrobenzene are more readily available than for some of the less-selective dichlorobenzene nitrations elsewhere in our range.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (98%+) for applications sensitive to isomeric carryover. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How 2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is manufactured by nitrating 1,4-dichlorobenzene with a mixed nitric/sulfuric acid system under controlled, moderate temperature. Because the two chlorines on the symmetric starting material both direct the incoming nitro group to the same equivalent position, this nitration is considerably more isomer-selective than nitrating an asymmetric dichlorobenzene, and gives this one isomer as the clear major product.
After nitration, the crude product is separated from the spent acid, washed, and crystallised to the required purity and colour before packing.
Why the symmetric starting material matters
Using the symmetric 1,4-dichlorobenzene isomer, rather than 1,2- or 1,3-dichlorobenzene, is what gives such a clean, dominant single product here — this is a useful general principle buyers can apply when thinking about which dichlorobenzene nitration route is likely to give the cleanest, most available isomer for a given target.
Industries and processes that use it
2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene is consumed mainly as a feedstock for 2,5-dichloroaniline across dye and agrochemical intermediate chemistry. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Dye & Pigment Intermediate (2,5-Dichloroaniline Route)
Reduction of the nitro group gives 2,5-dichloroaniline, a widely used dye and pigment intermediate.
Herbicide & Fungicide Intermediate Chemistry
A recognised starting material in agrochemical synthesis routes that specifically call for the symmetric 1,4-dichloro aniline substitution pattern.
Fine-Chemical & Specialty Synthesis
Used more broadly as a well-characterised, readily available dichloronitroaromatic building block.
Comparative Isomer Chemistry
Supplied alongside the 2,3- and 3,4-substituted isomers for processes that specifically require this particular substitution pattern.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The nitro group is the principal reactive handle for reduction chemistry, with both chlorines generally carried through unchanged. Reaction classes below cover the main ways this material is converted into a finished intermediate.
Reduction to 2,5-Dichloroaniline
Catalytic hydrogenation or chemical reduction converts the nitro group to a primary amine while leaving both chlorines in place, giving 2,5-dichloroaniline — the main downstream product made from this material.
Diazotization of the Reduced Amine
2,5-Dichloroaniline, once formed, diazotizes under standard cold, acidic conditions for azo-coupling chemistry in dye and pigment manufacture.
Acylation & Amide Formation
2,5-Dichloroaniline can be acylated at the amine nitrogen to give amide derivatives used in herbicide and fungicide intermediate synthesis.
Limited Reactivity at the Chlorines
Neither chlorine is strongly activated for nucleophilic aromatic substitution by the single nitro group in this substitution pattern, so both are generally carried through unchanged in downstream chemistry rather than displaced.
2,5-Dichloronitrobenzene against other isomers and nitroaromatics we supply
Buyers sourcing this isomer sometimes need the 2,3- or 3,4-substituted dichloronitrobenzene instead for a different downstream chemistry. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.

Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Harmful if swallowed.
May cause irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract on contact or inhalation.
Toxic to aquatic organisms, with the potential to cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.
Contact with certain metals can release flammable hydrogen gas; avoid contact with reactive metals during handling and storage.
Treat as persistent and toxic in the aquatic environment; avoid any release to drains or waterways.
Impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.
Flake material can generate dust; local exhaust ventilation is recommended during transfer and weighing.
Warning — GHS07 harmful and GHS09 environmental hazard pictograms apply.
This compound is harmful if swallowed and may irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and is toxic to aquatic organisms with potential long-term environmental effects; impervious gloves, eye protection and suitable respiratory protection are recommended for routine handling. Note also that contact with certain metals can release flammable hydrogen gas, so metal-contact precautions during storage and handling should be observed. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and ignition sources, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from reactive metals, strong oxidizing and strong reducing materials. Avoid generating or accumulating dust during handling. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay, melting point and colour before use.
