What 4-Fluoro-N-Isopropylaniline is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, the herbicide chemistry it feeds directly, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
4-Fluoro-N-Isopropylaniline is a secondary aromatic amine: a 4-fluoroaniline ring carrying an isopropyl group on nitrogen in place of one of the two N–H hydrogens of the parent aniline. The single remaining N–H keeps the nitrogen reactive toward acylation and sulfonylation, while the isopropyl group sterically shields it, and the para-fluorine moderates the ring's electron density — a combination that makes this molecule a purpose-built precursor for a specific, well-known class of herbicide actives rather than a general-purpose aniline.
At room temperature it is a pale yellow to light brown clear liquid. It is miscible with common organic solvents (ethanol, acetone, toluene) and only sparingly soluble in water, typical for an N-alkylated fluoroaniline of this size.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
This compound is best known as the aniline fragment used to build oxyacetamide-class herbicide active ingredients: the secondary amine is acylated with a chloroacetyl group, and the resulting chloroacetamide is then displaced with a heterocyclic thioether or ether partner to complete the active molecule. Buyers in the agrochemical sector specify this intermediate directly against that kind of downstream acylation/substitution sequence, which is why N–H availability, color and moisture are checked as closely as bulk assay.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 4-Fluoro-N-Isopropylaniline in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99%+) for applications sensitive to color body or trace metal content carried over from the reductive-alkylation step. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis so your incoming QC team can verify the parameters you ordered against.
How 4-Fluoro-N-Isopropylaniline is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
4-Fluoro-N-Isopropylaniline is built from 4-fluoronitrobenzene (itself obtained by halogen-exchange fluorination of para-chloronitrobenzene). Two industrial routes are used to install the isopropyl group on nitrogen while reducing the nitro group to an amine.
The first, and more common on scale, is a direct catalytic reductive alkylation: 4-fluoronitrobenzene is hydrogenated in the presence of acetone over a suitable metal catalyst, so that the nitro group is reduced to the amine and the resulting 4-fluoroaniline condenses with acetone and is hydrogenated again, in essentially one pot, to give the secondary N-isopropylamine directly. The second route reduces 4-fluoronitrobenzene to 4-fluoroaniline first, then carries out a separate reductive amination or alkylation step with acetone or isopropanol over a hydrogenation catalyst.
After the alkylation/reduction sequence, the crude secondary amine is washed and vacuum-distilled to remove unreacted 4-fluoroaniline, over-alkylated by-products and residual catalyst metals before drying and packing. This distillation cut is where technical grade and high-purity grade material part ways.
Why the nitro-chlorobenzene starting chain matters
Because the route runs through para-chloronitrobenzene → 4-fluoronitrobenzene → 4-fluoro-N-isopropylaniline, the quality of the upstream Halex fluorination step carries through to the finished product: incomplete chlorine-to-fluorine exchange leaves chloro-fluoro cross-contaminants that are difficult to remove by distillation alone, which is why we qualify this intermediate's manufacturing partners on their fluorination consistency, not just their final assay.
Industries and processes that use it
4-Fluoro-N-Isopropylaniline is consumed almost entirely by one well-defined downstream use, with smaller volumes going into closely related chemistry.
Oxyacetamide Herbicide Synthesis
The principal application: acylation of the secondary amine with a chloroacetyl group, followed by displacement with a heterocyclic thioether, builds oxyacetamide-class pre-emergence herbicide active ingredients used in cereal and other row-crop weed control.
Pharmaceutical Intermediates
The N-isopropyl fluoroaniline scaffold is also used as a building block in pharmaceutical synthesis routes that call for a sterically shielded, fluorinated secondary amine.
Agrochemical Research
Used in agrochemical R&D for exploring analogues and next-generation actives built on the same N-alkyl fluoroaniline core.
Specialty Material Science
Explored as a building block in advanced polymer and coating formulations, where the fluorine substituent and the secondary amine contribute to the target material's stability profile.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The single remaining N–H is the reactive handle. As a secondary aromatic amine it cannot form a stable diazonium salt the way a primary aniline does, so acylation and alkylation dominate its downstream chemistry.
Chloroacetylation
Reaction of the secondary amine with chloroacetyl chloride gives the N-(4-fluorophenyl)-N-isopropyl chloroacetamide intermediate — the direct precursor step used in oxyacetamide herbicide manufacture.
Heterocyclic Displacement
The chloroacetamide's chlorine is subsequently displaced by a heterocyclic thiol or alcohol partner (such as a substituted thiadiazole or triazolinone), completing the herbicide active ingredient's structure.
General Acylation / Sulfonylation
Beyond the herbicide route, the same N–H reacts with other acid chlorides, anhydrides or sulfonyl chlorides to give amides or sulfonamides for pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis.
N-Alkylation (Further Substitution)
Under suitable conditions the remaining N–H can be further alkylated to give a tertiary amine, though this is a minor pathway compared with acylation given the steric bulk already present at nitrogen.

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store cool and dark in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing and acidic materials, to limit the gradual colour development typical of N-alkyl anilines on prolonged ambient storage. Once opened, reseal containers promptly to limit moisture and air exposure. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay, N–H content and colour before use.
