01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Ethylenediamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place as the first member of the ethyleneamine family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Ethylenediamine is the simplest 1,2-diamine: two primary amine groups joined by a two-carbon backbone. Each amine is independently basic and nucleophilic, and the two together can act as a bidentate chelating ligand toward transition-metal ions, or react twice over (once at each end) to build larger symmetric and chain-extended molecules. This dual reactivity — two reactive primary amines a short, fixed distance apart — is the single structural feature that explains almost everything the molecule is used for.

At room temperature it is a colourless, flammable, corrosive liquid with an ammonia-like odour, fully miscible with water. It is handled with the solvent-class and corrosive-liquid precautions typical of small, reactive diamines, and is the first member of what the industry calls the "polyethylene amines" — the ethyleneamine homologous series extended by diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine and tetraethylenepentamine.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Ethylenediamine is the building block for derivatives of carboxylic acids, nitriles, alcohols and carbonyl compounds across organic synthesis. Its best-known single application is as the precursor to EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), one of the most widely used chelating agents; it is also the starting material for the dithiocarbamate fungicides Maneb, Mancozeb, Zineb and Metiram, for ethylenediamine-derived antihistamines, for PAMAM dendrimers, and for solubilising theophylline in the drug aminophylline. Beyond this, it is used in polyurethane fibre manufacture, as a solvent and corrosion inhibitor, as an epoxy curing agent, and in photographic chemical formulations.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Ethylenediamine in technical grade (≈99% assay) for standard fungicide-intermediate and chelating-agent synthesis, and high-purity grade (99.5%+) for pharmaceutical-intermediate applications sensitive to colour and water content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Ethylenediamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Ethylenediamine is manufactured industrially by two principal routes. The main route treats 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) with ammonia under pressure at around 180 °C in aqueous medium: ClCH₂CH₂Cl + 2 NH₃ → H₂NCH₂CH₂NH₂ + 2 HCl. The resulting hydrochloride salt is freed with sodium hydroxide and the free amine recovered by fractional distillation; diethylenetriamine and triethylenetetramine form as controlled by-products of this same process. A second route reacts ethanolamine with ammonia over nickel catalysts, giving the diamine with water as the by-product instead of the chloride-salt stream of the EDC process.

Why the EDC/ammonia route dominates

The EDC/ammonia process is well established at scale and conveniently co-produces diethylenetriamine and triethylenetetramine — both of which have established commercial markets of their own — from the same feedstock stream, making the overall economics favourable despite the HCl by-product that must be neutralised.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Ethylenediamine is consumed by chelating-agent, fungicide and pharmaceutical-intermediate manufacture, with further demand from polyurethane fibre and epoxy chemistry. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

EDTA Chelating Agent Precursor

The starting material for ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), one of the most widely used chelating agents across industrial and consumer chemistry.

Field 02

Dithiocarbamate Fungicide Intermediate

The starting material for the dithiocarbamate fungicides Maneb, Mancozeb, Zineb and Metiram.

Field 03

Pharmaceutical Intermediate Chemistry

A precursor to ethylenediamine-derived antihistamines, PAMAM dendrimers, and the theophylline-solubilising drug aminophylline.

Field 04

Polyurethane Fibre & Epoxy Curing Chemistry

Used in polyurethane fibre manufacture and as an epoxy resin curing agent, drawing on its bifunctional amine reactivity.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The two independent primary amines govern almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways Ethylenediamine is converted into a finished intermediate.

Chelation / Carboxymethylation to EDTA

Reaction with formaldehyde and sodium cyanide (the Strecker-type route) or with chloroacetic acid carboxymethylates both nitrogens fourfold, giving EDTA directly.

Dithiocarbamate Formation

Reaction with carbon disulfide and a metal salt gives the dithiocarbamate fungicides Maneb, Zineb and related compounds.

Amide / Imine Formation

Reacts with carboxylic acid derivatives and carbonyl compounds to give amides and imines, a routine step in pharmaceutical and dendrimer intermediate synthesis.

Step Reaction with Dichloroethane (Oligomerisation)

Under the same EDC/ammonia process conditions, ethylenediamine can react further with dichloroethane or with itself and ammonia to build the higher ethyleneamines in the homologous series.
