Petroleum Coke
The carbon-rich solid residue of delayed coking supplied by Chelora Chemicals — fuel-grade green coke for kilns and power generation, and calcined anode-grade coke for aluminium smelting and graphite electrodes — exported from Indonesia in bulk with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Petroleum Coke is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the product's composition, how fuel-grade and anode-grade material differ, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Petroleum Coke is a solid, carbon-rich residue left behind when the heaviest fraction of crude oil — vacuum residue, the material with too high a boiling point to distil off even under vacuum — is thermally cracked under controlled conditions. What remains is overwhelmingly elemental carbon, carrying with it whatever sulphur, nitrogen and trace metals (chiefly vanadium and nickel) were concentrated in the original heavy residue, since there is no further distillation step to remove them.
In its freshly produced ('green') form it is a black, solid, granular to lump material with a still-significant volatile-matter content. Calcining it at very high temperature drives off that remaining volatile matter and moisture, raising both its carbon purity and its electrical conductivity, and transforms it from a fuel-grade material into the anode-grade feedstock the aluminium and graphite-electrode industries specifically need.
Where each grade fits in the value chain
Green (uncalcined) petroleum coke, particularly higher-sulphur material, is used primarily as a fuel, substituting for coal in cement kiln firing and power generation, where its high fixed-carbon content and low ash give it a favourable calorific value despite its sulphur content needing to be managed through the plant's emissions-control system. Calcined petroleum coke (CPC), produced by calcining low-sulphur green coke at very high temperature, is the dominant raw material for carbon anodes used in aluminium smelting by the Hall-Héroult process, and is also used to manufacture graphite electrodes for electric-arc-furnace steelmaking and as a carbon-based reducing agent in processes such as titanium dioxide manufacture.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Petroleum Coke in green, fuel grade (for kiln and power-generation fuel use) and, on request, calcined, anode grade (for aluminium and graphite-electrode applications), each specified by sulphur content and the relevant carbon-purity parameters. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How Petroleum Coke is produced
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Petroleum Coke is produced by the delayed coking process: vacuum residue, the heaviest fraction left after an atmospheric and vacuum distillation of crude oil, is heated and fed into a large coke drum, where it is held at high temperature (roughly 480–515°C) under pressure for an extended period. Over this time, the heavy hydrocarbon molecules thermally crack: lighter products (coker gas, naphtha and gas oil fractions) are driven off and recovered as valuable refinery intermediates, while the carbon-rich material that cannot crack further accumulates and solidifies in the drum as green petroleum coke, which is then cut out hydraulically once the drum is full.
Where anode-grade material is wanted, green coke — selected for a sufficiently low starting sulphur and metals content — is calcined in a rotary kiln at 1,200–1,350°C. This calcining step drives off essentially all remaining moisture and volatile matter, increases the material's real density and electrical conductivity, and converts the green coke's porous structure into the denser, more ordered carbon structure that anode and graphite-electrode manufacture requires.
Industries and processes that use it
Petroleum Coke is consumed as both a high-carbon fuel and, once calcined, as the dominant carbon raw material for aluminium and graphite-electrode manufacture. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Cement Kiln & Power Plant Fuel
Green, higher-sulphur coke substitutes for coal as a high-carbon, high-calorific-value fuel in cement kiln firing and power generation.
Aluminium Smelting Anodes
Calcined, low-sulphur coke is the dominant raw material for carbon anodes consumed in the Hall-Héroult aluminium smelting process.
Graphite Electrode Manufacture
Calcined coke, further graphitised at very high temperature, is a key raw material for graphite electrodes used in electric-arc-furnace steelmaking.
Metallurgical & Chemical Reducing Agent
Used as a carbon-based reducing agent in select metallurgical processes and in titanium dioxide manufacture.
How the product is typically carried forward
The material's high fixed-carbon content and its sulphur/metals profile govern almost all of its further industrial use. The categories below account for most of the ways Petroleum Coke is put to work.
Combustion (Fuel Use)
Green coke is pulverised and combusted in cement kilns or power-plant boilers, releasing its high carbon content as heat energy, with sulphur oxides managed through the plant's flue-gas desulphurisation system.
Calcination
Green coke is heated in a rotary kiln to drive off volatile matter and moisture, converting it to the denser, higher-purity calcined coke anode-grade manufacture requires.
Anode Baking
Calcined coke is blended with pitch binder and baked into solid carbon anode blocks, which are consumed in the aluminium electrolysis cell.
Graphitisation
Calcined coke, formed into electrode shapes with pitch binder, is heated to extremely high temperature (above 2,500 °C) to convert its carbon structure into graphite for electrode use.
Petroleum Coke against other refinery products we supply
Buyers sourcing petroleum coke often also need other heavy-refinery or specialty petroleum products from the same crude barrel. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.

Exact composition, sulphur content and grade-specific specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than Petroleum Coke.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
May cause respiratory irritation (dust).
Can form a combustible dust cloud; dust-explosion precautions apply in bulk handling and conveying.
Bulk stockpiles can be subject to self-heating over time; stockpile management practices are used to monitor and mitigate this.
Comparatively low acute oral and dermal toxicity; main hazard relates to dust inhalation and bulk-handling considerations.
Dust-suitable respiratory protection and safety glasses are the baseline for routine bulk handling.
Minimise airborne dust during loading, unloading and conveying, particularly for fine calcined-grade material.
Warning — GHS07 harmful pictogram applies for dust inhalation risk.
This product may cause respiratory irritation when handled as dust, and bulk stockpiles can be subject to self-heating and combustible-dust risk, both of which are managed through standard bulk-material stockpile and dust-control practices. It has a comparatively low acute toxicity profile otherwise. Routine bulk handling calls for dust-suitable respiratory protection and eye protection. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store as a bulk stockpile, following standard bulk-carbon stockpile management practices, including periodic temperature monitoring to detect self-heating and dust-suppression measures (such as water spray) during handling and in windy conditions. Keep away from ignition sources given the combustible-dust risk. Calcined, anode-grade material is typically handled and stored under tighter contamination-control measures than fuel-grade green coke, given its sensitivity to trace-element pickup.
