Ortho Chloroaniline
A liquid monochloroaniline intermediate supplied by Chelora Chemicals for sulfonylurea herbicide, azo dye and polyurethane chain-extender chemistry — exported from Indonesia in bulk and drum quantities, with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Ortho Chloroaniline is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Ortho Chloroaniline — 2-chloroaniline in systematic naming — carries a single chlorine on the ring position directly beside the amino group. That one substituent sits close enough to influence the nitrogen without blocking it, so the amine stays reactive while the ring's electronics shift, and the molecule reads as a mild steric nudge rather than the full hindrance seen in a 2,6-disubstituted aniline.
Unlike the dichloroanilines, this is a liquid at ambient temperature: colourless to pale yellow when fresh, darkening on exposure to air and light. Its freezing point of roughly −2 to 3 °C is the practical catch — in a temperate winter or a chilled store it will solidify, so lines and drums need trace heating or a heated store that the lower-freezing meta isomer does not. Commercial material is commonly stabilised with about 0.1% hydrazine hydrate and must be kept out of light. It is sparingly soluble in water at about 5.1 g/L at 20 °C.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
Ortho Chloroaniline is used as a synthesis intermediate across several sectors at once. Its documented downstream chain runs to o-chlorobenzenesulfonamide and 2-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride, feeding sulfonylurea herbicides including chlorsulfuron; to the herbicide benazolin and the fungicide anilazine; to 2-chlorophenyl isocyanate; to MOCA, the polyurethane chain extender; and into azo dye manufacture through azoic diazo bases, Reactive Red 24 and acid dye chemistry.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Ortho Chloroaniline in technical grade (99%) for standard industrial synthesis and high-purity grade (99.5%+) where isomeric chloroaniline carryover matters. Both ship with a batch-wise certificate of analysis reporting assay by GC, isomer content, moisture and colour. Because this product is a liquid, drum and ISO-tank options differ in lead time — confirm your preference at the enquiry stage.
How Ortho Chloroaniline is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Ortho Chloroaniline is made by reducing 2-nitrochlorobenzene, either by catalytic hydrogenation or by the older iron and hydrochloric acid Béchamp reduction. The nitro precursor comes from the nitration of chlorobenzene, a reaction that distributes roughly 34–36% to the ortho position alongside the dominant para fraction.
That co-product relationship is the commercial foundation of this grade. Because ortho- and para-nitrochlorobenzene come out of the same nitration, the feedstock for Ortho Chloroaniline is produced at scale whether or not the ortho stream is the plant's primary target, which keeps availability good and pricing stable relative to the meta isomer.
Direct chlorination of aniline is not used industrially. It gives poor positional selectivity and runs on to over-chlorinated products, so the nitrate-then-reduce sequence is universal. After reduction the crude amine is washed, dried and distilled; the distillation cut is where technical and high-purity grades separate.
Why stabiliser and light protection are part of the specification
Like other liquid anilines, this material oxidises slowly in air and darkens under light, and the colour drift is accompanied by trace degradation products. Commercial grades are therefore commonly supplied stabilised with around 0.1% hydrazine hydrate and packed in opaque or lined containers. If your process is sensitive to the stabiliser, say so at the enquiry stage — it is a specification decision, not a default to be discovered later.
Industries and processes that use it
Ortho Chloroaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Sulfonylurea Herbicides
Through o-chlorobenzenesulfonamide and 2-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride to sulfonylurea actives including chlorsulfuron; also the herbicide benazolin and the fungicide anilazine.
Azo & Reactive Dyes
A diazo base for azoic dyeing and a building block for Reactive Red 24 and acid black and acid blue azo dyes.
Polyurethane Chemistry
The precursor to MOCA (4,4′-methylenebis(2-chloroaniline)), a chain extender for cast polyurethane elastomers.
Fine Chemical Intermediates
2-Chlorophenyl isocyanate, 8-chloroquinoline, 2-chloroacetoacetanilide for arylide pigments, o-phenetidine and fluorescent whitening agents.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The primary amine is the reactive handle, and with only one ortho substituent it remains available for the full range of aniline chemistry — diazotization, acylation, condensation and sulfonation-derived routes.
Diazotization
Nitrous acid generated in situ from sodium nitrite and mineral acid below 5 °C converts the amine to the 2-chlorobenzenediazonium salt, the entry to azo coupling and Sandmeyer chemistry.
Azo Coupling
The diazonium salt is coupled with an electron-rich partner to build the azo linkage of a dye, either in the vessel or on the fibre in azoic dyeing.
Condensation to MOCA
Condensation with formaldehyde links two molecules through a methylene bridge to give the diamine chain extender used in cast polyurethane systems.
Isocyanate Formation
Phosgenation gives 2-chlorophenyl isocyanate, used to build ureas and carbamates.
Ring Closure
Skraup and related cyclisations use the amine to construct quinoline cores such as 8-chloroquinoline.
Ortho Chloroaniline against its near relatives
The three monochloroaniline isomers share a formula and differ sharply in route economics, physical handling and regulatory standing. The table below is the quick orientation; each has its own product page.
| Product | CAS Number | Typically Used In | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ortho Chloroaniline | 95-51-2 | Sulfonylurea herbicides, azo dyes, MOCA | The product on this page — liquid, freezes near 0 °C. |
| Meta Chloroaniline | 108-42-9 | Hydrochlorothiazide, miconazole, azoic dyes | Lowest freezing point; the easiest of the three to handle. |
| Para Chloroaniline | 106-47-8 | Chlorhexidine, phenylurea and benzoylurea actives | Solid, and classified as a Category 1B carcinogen in the EU. |
| 2,4-Dichloroaniline | 554-00-7 | Crop protection, azo dyes, pharmaceutical intermediates | The dichlorinated family — see its page for the full set. |
Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide rather than a specification sheet.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Toxic if swallowed.
Toxic in contact with skin.
Toxic if inhaled.
May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
Very toxic to aquatic life.
Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
Danger — GHS06 toxic, GHS08 health hazard and GHS09 environment pictograms apply.
This classification is harmonised in Annex VI to CLP under the group entry for chloroanilines, Index number 612-010-00-8, with an M-factor of 10 for aquatic toxicity. Beyond the harmonised entry, some registrants additionally self-classify eye irritation and suspected germ-cell mutagenicity (H341); that is supplier self-classification and not harmonised. The substance is absorbed through intact skin and causes methaemoglobinaemia, with onset that may be delayed — skin protection matters as much as respiratory protection, and medical observation is indicated after significant exposure. Transport is UN 2019, Class 6.1, Packing Group II.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from light, in tightly closed original containers away from oxidizers and strong acids. Because the freezing point is close to 0 °C, storage below about 5 °C will solidify the product; this does no harm but requires melting and homogenising before use or sampling. Commercial grades are normally stabilised against oxidation, and the stabiliser is part of the specification rather than an additive to be ignored. Expect gradual darkening in storage; it is a colour change rather than an assay change.
