01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Ortho Toluidine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Ortho Toluidine carries a methyl group on the ring position beside the amino group. We state this plainly and early rather than in a hazard section buried at the bottom of the page: this substance is classified by IARC as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans — the most severe classification carried by any product in our range, and more severe than the Category 1B entries elsewhere on this site. The evidence is epidemiological, from bladder cancer in rubber-chemical and dye-industry workers, and it carries a harmonised EU Category 1B carcinogen classification, H350, under Annex VI to CLP.

We supply it because it remains a legitimate, regulated industrial intermediate with real downstream demand, not because the hazard is in doubt. Physically it is a colourless liquid when fresh, darkening to reddish-brown on exposure to air and light. It is only slightly soluble in water and dissolves in common organic solvents. Its boiling point of 200–202 °C and flash point of 85 °C sit close to its meta and para relatives, which is unsurprising given how similar the three isomers are structurally — the hazard profile is where they diverge sharply.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Ortho Toluidine is used as an intermediate for rubber-industry accelerators and antidegradants, for dye and pigment manufacture, and — via 6-ethyl-o-toluidine — for the chloroacetanilide herbicides metolachlor and acetochlor. Its historical dominance in dye manufacture has declined over recent decades, driven by cost competition from producers in China and India rather than by a formal phase-out; current demand through our desk is weighted towards rubber chemicals and agrochemical intermediate use.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Ortho Toluidine in technical grade (99%) and high-purity grade (99.5%+), both with a batch-wise certificate of analysis. Given its carcinogen classification, every order for this product is accompanied by the classification documentation and handling guidance appropriate to a Category 1B substance, and we will discuss your intended use, occupational controls and destination-country import rules at the enquiry stage as a matter of course.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Ortho Toluidine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Ortho Toluidine is made by nitrating toluene under conditions selective for the ortho position, separating 2-nitrotoluene from the accompanying para and minor meta isomers by distillation, and then reducing the nitro group — by catalytic hydrogenation or an equivalent chemical reduction — to the amine.

The nitration step does not give a single isomer cleanly; toluene nitration produces a mixture dominated by ortho and para nitrotoluene with a small meta fraction, and the three nitro isomers are physically similar enough that the separation, not the reduction, is the demanding part of the process.

After reduction the crude amine is washed and distilled to remove residual nitro compound, isomeric carryover and catalyst metal before packing. Because this product is regulated as a carcinogen, process containment and worker exposure control at the reduction and finishing stages are a significant part of what a compliant manufacturing site has to manage — detail that sits with our manufacturing partners rather than with the buyer.

Why the isomer separation, not the chemistry, is the hard part

All three toluidine isomers come from reducing the corresponding nitrotoluene, and all three nitrotoluenes come from the same toluene nitration step in different proportions. The separation of ortho from para nitrotoluene before reduction is what fixes isomer purity, and it is set upstream of the chemistry described above — a mixed or poorly separated nitrotoluene feed carries isomeric toluidine contamination all the way through to the finished product, which matters acutely here given how differently the three isomers are regulated.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Ortho Toluidine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Rubber Chemicals

An intermediate for rubber accelerators, including di-ortho-tolylguanidine, and for antidegradant chemistry used in tyre and general rubber manufacture.

Field 02

Dyes & Pigments

A historically significant dye-industry intermediate, feeding a wide range of azo dyes and pigments; demand has shifted toward lower-cost production regions over recent decades.

Field 03

Chloroacetanilide Herbicides

Via 6-ethyl-o-toluidine, an intermediate for the chloroacetanilide herbicides metolachlor and acetochlor.

Field 04

Pharmaceutical Reference

A documented metabolite of the local anaesthetic prilocaine, relevant to pharmaceutical impurity and metabolite reference work.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The amine is the reactive handle, and the reactions below are the ones its documented downstream chemistry is built on.

Guanidine Formation

Condensation chemistry builds di-ortho-tolylguanidine and related rubber-accelerator structures from the amine.

Diazotization

Nitrous acid generated in situ below 5 °C converts the amine to the diazonium salt, the entry point to azo dye and pigment coupling chemistry.

Azo Coupling

The diazonium salt is coupled with an electron-rich partner to build the azo chromophore of a dye or pigment.

N-Ethylation

Reaction to install an ethyl group at the ring position para to the methyl gives 6-ethyl-o-toluidine, the entry point to the metolachlor and acetochlor herbicide chain.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Ortho Toluidine against its near relatives

The three toluidine isomers share a formula and a close structural relationship, but their regulatory status could not be more different. The table below sets that out plainly before anything else.

Signal word

Danger — GHS06 toxic, GHS08 health hazard and GHS09 environment pictograms apply.

This substance carries a harmonised classification in Annex VI to CLP, Index number 612-091-00-X, including Carcinogenicity Category 1B, H350 — may cause cancer. This is legally binding in the EU and the UK. IARC placed it in Group 1 — carcinogenic to humans — in Monograph Volume 99 (2010), an upgrade from the earlier Group 2A assessment, based on sufficient epidemiological evidence of urinary bladder cancer in rubber-chemical and dye-industry worker cohorts, supported by animal and mechanistic data. The US National Toxicology Program lists it as "known to be a human carcinogen." It is absorbed readily through intact skin, and the EU's binding occupational exposure limit under the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive is 0.5 mg/m³ TWA — engineer handling around that figure. Full PPE, closed-system handling and medical surveillance are appropriate wherever this substance is processed.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, protected from light
ContainerSealed lined drum, restricted access
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
Keep Away FromOxidizers, strong acids, direct light, unprotected skin contact
Handling NoteCategory 1B carcinogen — full PPE required

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from light, in tightly closed original containers away from oxidizers and strong acids, in a location consistent with your site's carcinogen-handling procedures. The near-ambient melting point means the product may partially solidify in cool storage; melt and homogenise fully before sampling, using the same skin-protection measures as for handling the liquid. It darkens from colourless towards reddish-brown on exposure to air and light — a colour change, not an assay change — but minimising that exposure also limits unnecessary handling of a Category 1B carcinogen.

We supply technical grade and high-purity grade — the exact figures are shown in the specification rail at the top of this page. Each batch ships with a certificate of analysis stating assay, isomer purity and moisture against the agreed specification.
04Is Ortho Toluidine hazardous?+
Yes. It carries the GHS signal word Danger with the hazard statements listed in the hazard section of this page. It should be handled with appropriate PPE and in line with the safety data sheet supplied with each shipment.
05Is Ortho Toluidine really a confirmed carcinogen, not just a suspected one?+
Yes. IARC placed it in Group 1 — carcinogenic to humans — in 2010, its most severe classification, based on epidemiological evidence of bladder cancer in rubber-chemical and dye-industry workers. The EU's harmonised classification under Annex VI to CLP is Category 1B with hazard statement H350, and the US National Toxicology Program lists it as "known to be a human carcinogen." This is a stronger classification than most of the other regulated substances in our range, and we handle, document and discuss orders for this grade accordingly.
06What exposure controls does this grade require?+
Full PPE with no skin contact, closed or well-contained processing, and adequate ventilation are the baseline. The substance is absorbed readily through intact skin, so skin protection matters as much as respiratory protection. The EU's binding occupational exposure limit is 0.5 mg/m³ time-weighted average under the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive, with some member states setting lower national limits — your site's industrial hygiene programme should be designed around the limit that applies in your jurisdiction, not a generic aniline precaution.
07What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 220 kg drums, with ibc / iso tank available for bulk orders. Trial quantities from a single drum can usually be arranged before you commit to larger volumes.
08How long does delivery take?+

09Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
10How is Ortho Toluidine manufactured?+
2-Nitrotoluene, separated from the mixed nitration of toluene. Catalytic hydrogenation of 2-nitrotoluene is the usual industrial reduction, followed by washing and distillation or recrystallisation before packing.
11What is the shelf life, and how should it be stored?+
Typical shelf life is around 24 months in original, unopened packaging stored as described in the storage section of this page. If a batch is held beyond its shelf life, we recommend re-checking assay and moisture before use.
