01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Aminoethylethanolamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place as a hybrid diamine/alkanolamine, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Aminoethylethanolamine bridges two of the amine families in this catalogue: one end carries a primary amine identical in reactivity to ethylenediamine's, while the other carries a secondary-amine/hydroxyl pairing like N-methylethanolamine's. This gives the molecule three distinct reactive sites — a primary amine, a secondary amine, and a hydroxyl — each of which can be addressed somewhat selectively depending on reaction conditions, and together give it strong multidentate chelating ability toward metal ions.

At room temperature it is a colourless to pale yellow, viscous, high-boiling liquid, fully miscible with water. It is handled with the solvent-class precautions typical of alkanolamines and diamines, and has a high flash point relative to the lower amines in this catalogue.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Aminoethylethanolamine is used as a fuel and lubricating-oil additive, where its multiple nitrogen and oxygen donor sites help disperse and suspend combustion by-products; as a chelating agent, drawing on the same multidentate binding ability; and as a building block for surfactants, where the hydrophilic, multiply-functionalised head group is incorporated into amphoteric and cationic surfactant structures.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Aminoethylethanolamine in technical grade (≈98% assay) for standard fuel-additive and surfactant chemistry, and high-purity grade (99%+) for chelating-agent applications sensitive to colour and trace-metal content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Aminoethylethanolamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Aminoethylethanolamine is manufactured by ethoxylating ethylenediamine with ethylene oxide in the presence of water: H₂NCH₂CH₂NH₂ + C₂H₄O → H₂NCH₂CH₂NHCH₂CH₂OH. Because ethylenediamine carries two reactive amine nitrogens, each capable of further ethoxylation, the reaction uses an excess of the diamine to favour the mono-ethoxylated target product over higher-substituted by-products, which are separated by fractional distillation.

Why the excess-diamine route is preferred

Using an excess of ethylenediamine keeps the statistical likelihood of a second ethoxylation on the same molecule low, giving a good yield of the target mono-substituted hybrid amine with manageable downstream separation.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Aminoethylethanolamine is consumed by fuel and lubricant additive, chelating-agent and surfactant manufacture. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Fuel & Lubricating Oil Additive

Its multiple nitrogen and oxygen donor sites help disperse and suspend combustion by-products in fuel and lubricant formulations.

Field 02

Chelating Agent

Acts as a multidentate chelating agent toward metal ions, drawing on its combined primary-amine, secondary-amine and hydroxyl donor sites.

Field 03

Surfactant Intermediate Chemistry

A building block for amphoteric and cationic surfactant structures, where its multiply-functionalised head group provides hydrophilicity.

Field 04

Specialty Polymer & Resin Intermediate

Used in some specialty polymer and resin formulations wherever a hybrid diamine/alkanolamine functionality is required.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The combination of a primary amine, a secondary amine and a hydroxyl group governs almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways Aminoethylethanolamine is converted into a finished intermediate.

Metal-Ion Chelation

The three donor sites together coordinate metal ions in a multidentate fashion, the basis of its chelating-agent and fuel-additive dispersancy roles.

Amide Formation at the Primary Amine

The more nucleophilic primary amine reacts preferentially with acid chlorides and anhydrides to give amides, a step used in surfactant intermediate synthesis.

Quaternisation

Reacts with alkylating agents to give quaternary ammonium or amphoteric surfactant structures.

Esterification at the Hydroxyl

The hydroxyl group can be esterified independently of the amine chemistry, giving further specialty derivatives.
