01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Para Nitroaniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Para Nitroaniline (4-nitroaniline) places the nitro and amino groups on opposite sides of the benzene ring, the arrangement that gives it the highest melting point of the three isomers (147–148°C, against 71–72°C for ortho and 114°C for meta) and the most extended conjugation between the two groups — which is also exactly why it is such a widely used dye intermediate: that conjugation is what gives its azo-coupled derivatives their strong, stable colour.

Two separate commercial chains run from this one compound. Reduction of the nitro group gives p-phenylenediamine (PPD), used in hair-dye and some polymer/rubber antioxidant chemistry. Separately, and without any reduction at all, the amino group on Para Nitroaniline itself can be diazotised directly and coupled with 2-naphthol to form Para Red (CI Pigment Red 1 / CI Pigment Red 2 depending on coupling partner) — one of the earliest azo pigments ever commercialised and still produced today for low-cost red pigment applications.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply the nitroaniline intermediate itself. We do not manufacture or supply p-phenylenediamine or the finished Para Red pigment — buyers running either chain should confirm their own reduction or coupling capability.

Grades we supply

99% min is the standard grade for both the PPD-reduction route and direct diazotisation/coupling; colour (measured on the Gardner or APHA scale) is tracked closely for dye and pigment applications, where even minor off-colour impurities carry through into the final coupled product.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Para Nitroaniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Para Nitroaniline is manufactured by nitration of acetanilide (the acetyl-protected form of aniline) followed by hydrolysis, or alternatively by ammonolysis of para-nitrochlorobenzene — the same halogen-displacement strategy used for the ortho isomer. The acetanilide route is historically significant and still used in parts of the industry: acetylating the amine first moderates its activating strength during nitration, which improves para-selectivity over the unprotected amine.

In the acetanilide route, nitration is carried out under controlled low-temperature conditions with mixed acid (sulfuric/nitric), favouring the para position over ortho because the acetamido group is large enough to disfavour substitution next to itself. The nitrated acetanilide is then hydrolysed — typically under acidic or basic aqueous conditions with heat — to remove the acetyl group and liberate the free amine, giving Para Nitroaniline.

The ammonolysis route, as with the ortho isomer, reacts para-nitrochlorobenzene with ammonia under pressure and heat, displacing chlorine directly. Both routes converge on the same product; the choice between them is largely a function of each manufacturer's existing acetanilide or nitrochlorobenzene supply chain. After either route, the crude product is purified by recrystallisation, typically from water or aqueous alcohol, and dried.

Why this isomer, specifically, dominates azo-pigment chemistry

Among the three mononitroanilines, the para isomer sees the heaviest use in azo-pigment synthesis specifically because the nitro and amino groups sit directly across the ring from each other. That symmetry gives the diazonium salt formed from the amino group a particularly stable, planar, highly conjugated structure once coupled to a naphthol partner — which is the molecular reason Para Red has stayed in commercial production for over a century, long after many other early synthetic pigments were superseded.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Para Nitroaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Para Red Pigment Synthesis

Direct diazotisation of the amino group followed by coupling with 2-naphthol gives Para Red (CI Pigment Red 1/2), one of the earliest and still commercially produced azo pigments.

Field 02

p-Phenylenediamine Precursor

Reduction of the nitro group gives p-phenylenediamine, used in hair-dye formulations and select polymer/rubber antioxidant chemistry.

Field 03

Dye Intermediate Chemistry

Used broadly across azo dye manufacturing as a diazo component, prized for the strong, stable colour its extended conjugation produces.

Field 04

Antioxidant & Rubber Chemical Precursor

Via p-phenylenediamine, this intermediate reaches into rubber antidegradant chemistry, where PPD derivatives are established antiozonants.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Para Nitroaniline's two commercial pathways split at the amino and nitro groups: the amino group is diazotised directly for pigment coupling without touching the nitro group, while the nitro group is separately reduced when the target is p-phenylenediamine instead.

Diazotisation of the amino group

Cold nitrous acid converts the free amino group to a diazonium salt without affecting the nitro group, which is unreactive under these conditions. This diazonium salt is then coupled with 2-naphthol to form Para Red.

Catalytic or chemical reduction to p-phenylenediamine

Hydrogenation over a metal catalyst, or classical chemical reduction, converts the nitro group to an amine, giving p-phenylenediamine — leaving the existing amino group untouched throughout.

Acylation for protected intermediates

The amino group can be re-acetylated to form para-nitroacetanilide where a protected intermediate is needed for further selective chemistry downstream, mirroring the protection strategy used in this compound's own upstream manufacture.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Para Nitroaniline against its near relatives

Para Nitroaniline is the highest-melting and most heavily used-in-pigment-chemistry of the three mononitroaniline isomers, set apart from the ortho and meta isomers by the symmetric, highly conjugated placement of its two functional groups.

Signal word

Warning

Para Nitroaniline carries no harmonised CMR entry under EU CLP Annex VI and has not been evaluated by IARC. Its classification is driven by acute toxicity, a documented skin-sensitisation potential (H317) that is somewhat more prominent on this isomer's safety data than on the ortho or meta forms, and pronounced aquatic toxicity (H400/H410) consistent with the mononitroaniline class generally. Suppliers sometimes omit the sensitisation statement on older or self-classified SDSs; our own registered classification includes it and we recommend checking the SDS version shipped with each lot.

01What is Para Nitroaniline used for?+
Para Nitroaniline is used mainly as a dye and pigment intermediate — most notably as the diazo component in the synthesis of Para Red (CI Pigment Red 1/2), one of the oldest commercially produced azo pigments — and separately as the precursor to p-phenylenediamine, used in hair-dye formulations and rubber antioxidant chemistry.
02What is the CAS number of Para Nitroaniline?+
Its CAS Registry Number is 100-01-6, with EC number 202-810-1, molecular formula C₆H₆N₂O₂ and a molar mass of 138.12 g/mol.
03What purity grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply technical grade and high-purity grade — the exact figures are shown in the specification rail at the top of this page. Each batch ships with a certificate of analysis stating assay, isomer purity and moisture against the agreed specification.
04Is Para Nitroaniline hazardous?+
Yes. It carries the GHS signal word Danger with the hazard statements listed in the hazard section of this page. It should be handled with appropriate PPE and in line with the safety data sheet supplied with each shipment.
05Do you supply Para Red pigment or p-phenylenediamine directly?+
No. We supply Para Nitroaniline, the upstream intermediate. The diazotisation-coupling chemistry to Para Red, and the separate reduction chemistry to p-phenylenediamine, are downstream processes we don't perform ourselves. Confirm your own process capability, or work with a qualified toller, before ordering for either chain.
06Is this the same compound as Ortho or Meta Nitroaniline?+
No. These are three separate positional isomers — CAS 100-01-6 (para), 88-74-4 (ortho), and 99-09-2 (meta) — with different melting points and different downstream chemistry. Check the CAS number on your purchase order matches the isomer you need.
07Why does this isomer show a skin-sensitisation hazard (H317) that the others don't emphasise as strongly?+
Our registered classification for Para Nitroaniline includes a documented skin-sensitisation statement based on the data available for this specific isomer. It's a real difference in the hazard data between isomers, not an inconsistency in our hazard framing — always check the classification by CAS number rather than assuming all three nitroanilines carry an identical hazard profile.
08What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 25 kg bags, with drums / jumbo bags available for bulk orders. Trial quantities from a single drum can usually be arranged before you commit to larger volumes.
09How long does delivery take?+

10Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
11How is Para Nitroaniline manufactured?+
Acetanilide or para-nitrochlorobenzene Nitration of acetanilide followed by hydrolysis (historically dominant route) is the usual industrial reduction, followed by washing and distillation or recrystallisation before packing.
12What is the shelf life, and how should it be stored?+
Typical shelf life is around 24 months in original, unopened packaging stored as described in the storage section of this page. If a batch is held beyond its shelf life, we recommend re-checking assay and moisture before use.
