01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Ortho Phenylenediamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Ortho Phenylenediamine's adjacent (1,2) amino groups allow it to condense with a carboxylic acid, aldehyde, or similar carbonyl partner to close a five-membered benzimidazole ring -- the single most important reaction this compound undergoes, and the basis of essentially all of its documented commercial applications. We want to state its mutagenicity finding precisely rather than loosely: the EU-harmonised H341 ("suspected of causing genetic defects") classification is based on positive results in somatic-cell genotoxicity assays specifically, not in heritable germline mutagenicity tests, where results were negative. This is a narrower, more precise finding than a flat "mutagen" label would suggest, and we state it at that precision.

We also want to correct a specific, easy-to-make assumption about this compound's cancer-classification status: unlike several chlorinated phenylenediamine derivatives that IARC has separately reviewed under a commonly-cited document title, we could not confirm an IARC Group evaluation specifically for this unsubstituted parent compound in the sources we checked, and we do not state one. Commercially, it is documented as an intermediate in azo-dye and sulfur-dye synthesis, as a precursor to diaminobenzidine-type histochemical and analytical reagents, and -- in more recent literature -- as a building-block in emerging benzimidazole-based battery and fuel-cell electrode materials.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply Ortho Phenylenediamine itself as a dye, reagent, and fine-chemical intermediate. We do not manufacture or supply finished dyes, analytical kits, or battery/fuel-cell materials made using it.

Grades we supply

99%+ technical and analytical grades are both offered.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Ortho Phenylenediamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Ortho Phenylenediamine is made industrially by reduction of ortho-nitroaniline or 2-nitroaniline-type precursors, or by reduction of ortho-dinitrobenzene, converting the nitro group(s) to amino groups.

The reduction step uses catalytic hydrogenation under controlled conditions to ensure complete conversion without over-reduction side reactions.

The crude product is purified by distillation or crystallisation and packed promptly under conditions that limit air and light exposure, since it darkens readily and oxidises on standing.

A precise mutagenicity finding, and a cancer-classification claim we don't make

Two things deserve precision here rather than a simplified summary. First, the H341 mutagenicity classification rests specifically on positive somatic-cell genotoxicity results, with negative results in heritable germline mutagenicity testing -- a narrower finding than "mutagen" alone conveys, and we state it at that precision rather than collapse the distinction. Second, a commonly-cited IARC document title referencing phenylenediamine compounds actually covers certain chlorinated derivatives, not this unsubstituted parent compound -- we checked specifically and could not confirm a separate IARC Group evaluation for this exact substance, so we do not state one.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Ortho Phenylenediamine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Benzimidazole-Ring Dye & Reagent Intermediate

Condenses with carbonyl partners to close a benzimidazole ring, the basis of its documented use in azo-dye/sulfur-dye synthesis and in diaminobenzidine-type analytical and histochemical reagents.

Field 02

Analytical Reagent

Used directly as an analytical reagent in several colorimetric and histochemical test methods, drawing on its ready oxidation/condensation chemistry.

Field 03

Emerging Battery & Fuel-Cell Material Building Block

Documented in more recent literature as a building-block for benzimidazole-based electrode and energy-material chemistry, a newer application area distinct from its traditional dye/reagent uses.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Ortho Phenylenediamine's defining reaction is ring closure with a carbonyl partner to form a benzimidazole, made possible specifically by its two amino groups sitting adjacent on the ring.

Benzimidazole ring closure

Condensation with a carboxylic acid, aldehyde, or similar carbonyl partner closes a five-membered benzimidazole ring, the key transformation behind this compound's dye, reagent, and emerging energy-material applications.

Oxidative coupling

Under oxidative conditions, the two adjacent amino groups participate in coupling reactions relevant to dye-intermediate and diaminobenzidine-type reagent chemistry.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Ortho Phenylenediamine against its near relatives

Ortho Phenylenediamine, Meta Phenylenediamine and Para Phenylenediamine are the three phenylenediamine isomers in this part of our range, each with distinct downstream chemistry despite sharing the same diamine functional pattern.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

H302

Harmful if swallowed.

H317

May cause an allergic skin reaction.

H318

Causes serious eye damage.

H341

Suspected of causing genetic defects (somatic-cell assays positive; germline mutagenicity testing negative).

H400

Very toxic to aquatic life.

Signal word

Danger

Ortho Phenylenediamine carries an EU-sourced classification set: Signal word Danger; H302 (harmful, Acute Tox. 4), H317 (Skin Sens. 1), H318 (Eye Dam. 1), H341 (Muta. 2) and H400 (Aquatic Acute 1). We state the H341 finding precisely: it is based on positive results in somatic-cell genotoxicity assays, with negative results in heritable germline mutagenicity testing -- a narrower finding than a flat mutagen classification would suggest. We did not confirm a separate IARC Group evaluation for this unsubstituted parent compound; a commonly-cited IARC document title in this area covers certain chlorinated derivatives, not this substance, and we do not state an IARC Group here as a result.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
