01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

We want to state this as clearly and as early as possible, the way we do for every carcinogen-classified product in our range: 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine, and its dihydrochloride salt supplied on this page, carries a harmonised EU CLP classification of Carcinogen Category 1B (H350, "may cause cancer"), an IARC classification of Group 2B ("possibly carcinogenic to humans"), and a US National Toxicology Program listing as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen." We want to be precise about what tier this is: all three of these are the probable/presumed/possible tier, based on sufficient evidence in animal studies, not the "confirmed/known human carcinogen" tier that substances like vinyl chloride or benzene itself carry. We state this distinction because overstating the classification would be as inaccurate as understating it, and we're committed to neither here.

This product is the dihydrochloride salt of 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine (free base CAS 91-94-1; salt CAS 612-83-9) — the salt form is more water-soluble and is a common commercial form for this diamine. Its real, long-established industrial use is as the diazotisable diamine behind diarylide pigment chemistry: double diazotisation followed by double coupling onto an acetoacetanilide-type component gives Pigment Yellow 12, 13, 14, 17, 55, 63 and 83, and Pigment Orange 13 and 34 — a well-documented family of organic pigments used across printing inks, plastics and coatings.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply the diamine salt itself. We do not manufacture or supply any of the finished diarylide pigments made from it.

Grades we supply

95% and 98% grades are both seen across the trade for this diamine salt.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine is made industrially from 2-nitrochlorobenzene: zinc or an equivalent reducing agent, under basic conditions, reduces it to 2,2'-dichlorohydrazobenzene, which then undergoes an acid-catalysed benzidine rearrangement — a well-known named reaction that converts a hydrazobenzene into the corresponding 4,4'-diaminobiphenyl (benzidine-class) structure.

The free base is then converted to its dihydrochloride salt by treatment with hydrochloric acid, giving the more water-soluble, more commercially convenient crystalline form traded under this product listing.

The finished salt is purified by crystallisation and tested for free-base content, residual starting material, and isomeric purity before release, since diarylide pigment manufacturers require consistent, well-characterised diamine input to achieve reproducible pigment shade.

A regulatory note that matters for how this product is traded

We want to flag an important and genuinely useful distinction for buyers assessing compliance requirements. EU REACH Annex XVII, Entry 43 restricts a list of aromatic amines including this one — but that restriction applies to finished azo dyes and colourants used in textile and leather articles with prolonged skin contact, specifically when reductive cleavage of the azo bond would release the restricted amine above a threshold concentration. It does not restrict the free amine or its salts as a traded chemical intermediate. What we supply here — the diamine itself, for pigment manufacture — is governed by its own CLP carcinogen classification and ordinary REACH registration duties, not by Entry 43's finished-article restriction. We mention this because the two are easy to conflate and the distinction materially affects what compliance documentation is actually required for this specific product.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Diarylide Yellow Pigment Manufacture

Double diazotisation and coupling with an acetoacetanilide-type component gives Pigment Yellow 12, 13, 14, 17, 55, 63 and 83 — a well-established, widely used diarylide yellow pigment family.

Field 02

Diarylide Orange Pigment Manufacture

The same diamine, coupled with a different partner, gives Pigment Orange 13 and 34.

Field 03

Printing Ink, Plastics & Coatings Colourants

The finished diarylide pigments made from this diamine are used broadly across printing inks, plastics masterbatch and coatings — this diamine itself is not used directly in any of those applications without first being converted to the pigment.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine's reaction chemistry is defined by its two amino groups, both diazotised and both coupled in a double reaction that builds the symmetric, bis-azo structure characteristic of diarylide pigments.

Double diazotisation

Both amino groups are converted to diazonium salts under standard cold nitrous-acid conditions, a necessary first step given the molecule's two reactive amine centres.

Double azo coupling

Both diazonium groups couple with an acetoacetanilide-type or similar component, building the symmetric bis-azo structure that defines the diarylide pigment family made from this diamine.

Why both amino groups matter structurally

The biphenyl backbone with two amino groups, one on each ring, is exactly what allows this double-coupling chemistry — a single-ring aniline cannot build the same symmetric pigment structure, which is why this benzidine-class diamine, not a simpler aniline, is the required starting material for this pigment family.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride against its near relatives

3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride and Ortho Tolidine Base are the two benzidine-class diamines in our range — close structural relatives, both classified as probable carcinogens, but feeding two distinct and non-overlapping sets of diarylide pigments.

Signal word

Danger

3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine carries a harmonised EU CLP Annex VI classification for the free base (Index 612-068-00-4) and a parallel generic entry covering its salts, including the dihydrochloride supplied here (Index 612-069-00-X) — both identical in substance: Carc. 1B (H350), Skin Sens. 1 (H317), Acute Tox. 4 dermal (H312), and Aquatic Acute 1 / Chronic 1 (H400/H410). IARC classifies this substance Group 2B ("possibly carcinogenic to humans"), a classification explicitly covering both the free base and the dihydrochloride salt together (IPCS INCHEM Supplement 7, 1987, building on Monographs Vol. 4 and 29). The US National Toxicology Program lists it as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" (first listed 1981), based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in animal studies (mammary gland, bladder, liver tumours, and leukaemia) rather than adequate human epidemiological data. We state plainly: this is the probable/presumed/possible tier across all three systems, consistently, not the confirmed/known tier. OSHA maintains a dedicated carcinogen standard for this substance and its salts (29 CFR 1910.1007).

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride used for?+
3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride is used as the diazotisable diamine behind a family of diarylide pigments: Pigment Yellow 12, 13, 14, 17, 55, 63 and 83, and Pigment Orange 13 and 34, made by double diazotisation and coupling and used across printing inks, plastics and coatings.
02What is the CAS number of 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride?+
Its CAS Registry Number is 612-83-9, with EC number 210-323-0, molecular formula C₁₂H₁₂Cl₄N₂ and a molar mass of 326.05 g/mol.
03What purity grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply technical grade and high-purity grade — the exact figures are shown in the specification rail at the top of this page. Each batch ships with a certificate of analysis stating assay, isomer purity and moisture against the agreed specification.
04Is 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride hazardous?+
Yes. It carries the GHS signal word Danger with the hazard statements listed in the hazard section of this page. It should be handled with appropriate PPE and in line with the safety data sheet supplied with each shipment.
05Is this a confirmed human carcinogen?+
No, and we want to be precise about this rather than either understate or overstate it. It is classified EU Carc. 1B, IARC Group 2B, and US NTP "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" — all three of these are the probable/presumed/possible tier, based on sufficient evidence in animal studies. None of them is the "confirmed/known human carcinogen" tier. We state the classification exactly as it stands under each system.
06Does the EU's restriction on this amine in dyed textiles mean I can't import or trade this chemical intermediate?+
No — that's a common and understandable point of confusion. REACH Annex XVII Entry 43 restricts finished azo dyes and colourants used in skin-contact textile/leather articles that could release this amine through reductive cleavage of the azo bond. It does not restrict the amine or its salts as a traded pigment-manufacturing intermediate, which is what we supply here. This product is governed by its CLP carcinogen classification and standard REACH registration duties, not by Entry 43.
07Do you supply the finished diarylide pigments made from this diamine?+
No. We supply the diamine salt itself. The double diazotisation-coupling chemistry that produces finished Pigment Yellow 12/13/14/17/55/63/83 or Pigment Orange 13/34 is carried out by pigment manufacturers downstream of us.
08What documentation should I expect with a shipment of this product?+
CLP-compliant hazard labelling and an SDS citing the full Carc. 1B classification on every shipment, consistent with international transport and import requirements for a classified carcinogen. Your own compliance team will likely want a CMR substance declaration for their records — we can provide the documentation needed to support that.
09What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 25 kg bags, with drums / jumbo bags available for bulk orders. Trial quantities from a single drum can usually be arranged before you commit to larger volumes.
10How long does delivery take?+
Typical lead time is two to four weeks plus transit, depending on whether the grade is ex-stock or made to order and your destination port. A firm date is confirmed in the written quotation.
11Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
12How is 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine Dihydrochloride manufactured?+
2-Nitrochlorobenzene Zinc/base reduction to 2,2'-dichlorohydrazobenzene, followed by acid-catalysed benzidine rearrangement; then dihydrochloride salt formation with HCl is the usual industrial route, followed by washing and distillation or recrystallisation before packing.
13What is the shelf life, and how should it be stored?+
Typical shelf life is around 24 months in original, unopened packaging stored as described in the storage section of this page. If a batch is held beyond its shelf life, we recommend re-checking assay and moisture before use.
