Para Toluidine
The para toluidine isomer, supplied by Chelora Chemicals as a dye and pigment intermediate and cyanoacrylate adhesive component — exported from Indonesia with the classification documentation this grade's carcinogen status requires.
What Para Toluidine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Para Toluidine places its methyl group directly opposite the amino group, the least sterically intrusive position of the three isomers and the one most readily oxidised or substituted at the ring position para to the amine — except that position is already blocked by the methyl, which is part of why this isomer behaves differently in synthesis from its ortho and meta relatives. It carries a harmonised EU classification as a Category 2 carcinogen, H351 ("suspected of causing cancer") — real and worth taking seriously, but a materially weaker classification than Ortho Toluidine's Category 1B, and one IARC itself has never evaluated.
Alone among the three isomers it is a solid at room temperature: colourless to white flakes or plates with a mild aromatic odour, darkening with age and air exposure. Its melting point of 44–45 °C is close enough to ambient that it is traded as flakes or handled gently warmed. Density figures in the literature for this compound show some spread between sources — treat the 1.05 g/cm³ figure as nominal and confirm against your specific certificate of analysis if tank or process sizing depends on it.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
Para Toluidine is used as a dye and pigment intermediate across the azo colourant trade, and as a component of accelerator systems for cyanoacrylate adhesive formulation, alongside its meta relative. It also serves as a precursor for Schiff-base ligands and as an analytical reagent in several established laboratory assays. Its US regulatory history is worth noting: it was listed under California Proposition 65 in 1990 based on an EPA weight-of-evidence finding, then delisted in 1999 — a reminder that classification status can change and that current documentation should always be checked against the live register rather than assumed from memory.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Para Toluidine in technical grade (99%) and high-purity grade (99.5%+), both with a batch-wise certificate of analysis. Given its carcinogen classification, orders are accompanied by the relevant classification and handling documentation, and we will discuss intended use and destination-market import requirements at the enquiry stage.
How Para Toluidine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Para Toluidine is made by reducing p-nitrotoluene, the major fraction from the mixed nitration of toluene, by catalytic hydrogenation. Because it is the dominant isomer in the nitration mixture, its feedstock is the most abundant of the three and the easiest to isolate cleanly by distillation ahead of the reduction step.
After reduction the amine is washed, purified and flaked or crystallised for packing — a more straightforward finishing step than for the two liquid isomers, since the product's own melting point does the work of separating it from residual liquid impurities.
Isomeric carryover from ortho- and meta-toluidine in the upstream nitration mixture is the main purity risk at this stage, and is controlled by distillation of the nitrotoluene feedstock before reduction and by chromatographic checks on the finished amine, since melting point alone can mask a few percent of a liquid isomer trapped within the crystalline flake.
Why availability doesn't mean the hazard is lower
Being the dominant isomer in toluene nitration makes Para Toluidine the easiest and cheapest of the three to produce — but that has no bearing on its hazard profile, which is set by its own biological activity rather than its route economics. Treat the carcinogen classification on its own terms rather than inferring anything from its availability or price relative to the ortho isomer.
Industries and processes that use it
Para Toluidine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Dyes & Pigments
An intermediate across the azo colourant trade, used in organic dye and pigment synthesis.
Cyanoacrylate Adhesives
A component of accelerator systems used in cyanoacrylate adhesive formulation, alongside Meta Toluidine.
Ligand & Analytical Chemistry
A precursor for Schiff-base ligands via condensation with aldehydes, and an analytical reagent in several established laboratory assays.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
With the methyl group opposite the amine and no ortho substituent, the nitrogen is readily available for standard aniline chemistry.
Diazotization
Nitrous acid generated in situ below 5 °C converts the amine to the diazonium salt, the entry to dye and pigment coupling.
Azo Coupling
The diazonium salt couples with an electron-rich partner to build the azo chromophore of a dye or pigment.
Schiff Base Formation
Condensation with an aldehyde, commonly salicylaldehyde, gives the imine ligand used in coordination chemistry.
Acylation
Reaction with an acid chloride or anhydride gives the anilide, used in general intermediate synthesis.
Para Toluidine against its near relatives
The three toluidine isomers share a formula and a close structural relationship, but their regulatory status could not be more different. The table below sets that out plainly before anything else.
| Product | CAS Number | Typically Used In | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Para Toluidine | 106-49-0 | Dye and pigment intermediates, adhesive chemistry | The product on this page. EU Category 2 carcinogen, H351. |
| Ortho Toluidine | 95-53-4 | Rubber chemicals, dyes, metolachlor/acetochlor | Also supplied — see its product page. IARC Group 1, the most severe classification in our range. |
| Meta Toluidine | 108-44-1 | Dye intermediates, cyanoacrylate adhesive chemistry | Also supplied — see its product page. No CMR classification found. |
| Aniline | 62-53-3 | MDI/polyurethane, rubber chemicals, dyes | The unmethylated parent compound — see its product page. |
Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide rather than a specification sheet.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Suspected of causing cancer.
Toxic if swallowed.
Toxic in contact with skin.
Toxic if inhaled.
May cause an allergic skin reaction.
Causes serious eye irritation.
Very toxic to aquatic life.
Danger — GHS06 toxic, GHS08 health hazard and GHS09 environment pictograms apply.
This substance carries a harmonised classification in Annex VI to CLP, Index number 612-160-00-4, including Carcinogenicity Category 2, H351 — suspected of causing cancer. This is a real and legally binding classification in the EU, but it is materially weaker than Ortho Toluidine's Category 1B, H350, and it is worth stating plainly that IARC itself has never evaluated this substance — treat it on its own documented classification rather than by association with its ortho relative. It was briefly listed under California Proposition 65 in 1990 based on a US EPA finding and delisted in 1999; always verify current status on the live register rather than historical record. Handle with full PPE, avoiding skin contact, with adequate ventilation.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from light, in tightly closed original containers away from oxidizers and strong acids, consistent with your site's carcinogen-handling procedures for a Category 2 substance. The melting point of 44–45 °C keeps it solid through normal ambient storage; light warming for transfer should stay well below any decomposition risk. It darkens with age and air exposure, a colour change rather than an assay change.
