01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Ortho Chloro Para Nitro Aniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its role as a diazo component, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Ortho Chloro Para Nitro Aniline — 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline — carries a chlorine atom ortho to the amino group and a nitro group para to it. The nitro substituent is strongly electron-withdrawing by both induction and resonance, which pulls electron density away from the amino nitrogen and makes this a far less basic, less nucleophilic amine than an unsubstituted aniline. That reduced basicity is not a drawback here: it is exactly the property that makes nitro-substituted chloroanilines of this kind valuable, stable diazonium precursors once diazotized under the stronger acid conditions the azo-pigment industry routinely uses.

At room temperature it is a yellow crystalline solid with a sharply defined melting point, only sparingly soluble in water but soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and ethanol. Its colour and crystal habit are themselves part of the specification buyers check, since visible discolouration can signal oxidative degradation or contamination.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

This compound is a classic diazo component used in azoic (naphthol AS) dye and pigment manufacture: it is diazotized and then coupled with a naphthol coupler to build the chromophore of a specific azo colourant. The same chloro-nitroaniline scaffold also appears as a building block in pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis, carried forward through its amino or nitro functional groups.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Ortho Chloro Para Nitro Aniline in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99%+) for applications sensitive to isomer carryover or colour body. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis so your incoming QC team can verify the parameters you ordered against.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Ortho Chloro Para Nitro Aniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Ortho Chloro Para Nitro Aniline is manufactured from para-chloronitrobenzene. The chlorine in para-chloronitrobenzene is activated toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution by the strongly electron-withdrawing nitro group sitting para to it, so the ring is first nitrated a second time (or, more commonly, the starting material is built from 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene) and the activated chlorine ortho to the first nitro group is displaced by ammonia under pressure, installing the amino group directly without a separate nitro-reduction step.

An alternative, more traditional route starts from 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene or a related chloronitrobenzene, with selective reduction of one nitro group to the amine using a controlled catalytic or chemical reduction that leaves the second, more hindered nitro group intact.

After the amination or selective-reduction step, the crude product is washed, recrystallized and dried to remove unreacted starting material, over-reduced by-products and process salts before packing. This recrystallization is where technical grade and high-purity grade material part ways.

Why selectivity matters here

With both a chlorine and a nitro group on the ring, controlling which position reacts — and ensuring only one nitro group is reduced, if that route is used — is the central manufacturing challenge. Buyers specifying this intermediate for diazo-component use care about isomer purity more than almost any other parameter, since a positional isomer carried into the diazotization step couples to give an off-shade pigment batch.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Ortho Chloro Para Nitro Aniline is consumed almost entirely as a diazo-component intermediate. The fields below account for most of the global demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Azo Dyes & Pigments

A diazo component in azoic (naphthol AS) dye and pigment manufacture: diazotized and coupled with a naphthol partner to build the colourant's chromophore.

Field 02

Pharmaceutical Intermediates

Used as a chloro-nitroaniline building block in pharmaceutical synthesis routes that call for this specific substitution pattern.

Field 03

Fine Chemical Synthesis

A starting material for further nitro- and amino-substituted aromatic intermediates used across process and research chemistry.

Field 04

Specialty Chemical Intermediates

Carried forward into specialty chemical structures where the ortho-chloro, para-nitro substitution pattern is part of the target molecule.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The para-nitro group strongly deactivates the amino group, so this molecule behaves differently from an unsubstituted aniline: diazotization needs stronger acid conditions, and the nitro group itself is also available for reduction chemistry.

Diazotization (Diazo Component Use)

Under the stronger acid conditions used industrially for weakly basic nitroanilines, the amino group is converted to a diazonium salt — the entry point for coupling with a naphthol partner to build an azoic dye or pigment.

Azo Coupling

The diazonium salt is coupled with an electron-rich naphthol or acetoacetanilide-type coupler to form the azo (–N=N–) chromophore that gives the finished colourant its shade.

Acylation

Reaction with an acid chloride or anhydride gives an amide, used in some pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis routes built on this scaffold.

Nitro Group Reduction

Catalytic or chemical reduction of the nitro group gives the corresponding diamine (4-chloro-1,2-diaminobenzene-type structure), a route used to access further dye, rubber-chemical and pharmaceutical intermediates.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

H302

Harmful if swallowed.

H411

Toxic to aquatic life, with long-lasting effects.

Acute Tox. 4

Oral — REACH classification category 4.

Aquatic Chronic 2

REACH classification for chronic aquatic hazard.

Storage Note

Keep away from strong oxidizers; nitroaromatic amines can be thermally sensitive in bulk.

Dust Handling

Avoid generating or inhaling dust during transfer and weighing.

Colour Check

Significant darkening on receipt can indicate degradation; verify against the batch CoA.

Signal word

Warning — GHS07 exclamation-mark and GHS09 environmental pictograms commonly apply.

Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection and adequate ventilation; avoid release to drains and waterways given its aquatic toxicity profile. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, ambient
ContainerOriginal sealed drum / bag
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
Keep Away FromOxidizers, reducing agents
Beyond Shelf LifeRe-assay before use

Store in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing and reducing materials. Once opened, reseal promptly to limit moisture pickup, which can affect both assay and flow characteristics. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay and colour before it goes into a process.
