2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline
A dichlorinated nitroaniline supplied by Chelora Chemicals both as a dye/pigment diazo-component intermediate and, under its common name Dichloran (DCNA), as a registered protectant fungicide active — exported from Indonesia in technical and high-purity grades.
What 2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's two distinct identities — a dye-industry diazo component and a standalone fungicide active — and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline is unusual among the chloronitroanilines in our range in that it is sourced for two genuinely different purposes. Chemically, it is a dichlorinated, nitro-substituted primary aromatic amine — the symmetrical 2,6-dichloro substitution pattern around the amino group gives it a particular steric and electronic profile, and the amine is strongly deactivated by the combination of two ortho-chlorines and a para-nitro group. Commercially, this same substance is also the active ingredient sold under the common name Dichloran (DCNA), with Botran and Allisan among its registered trade names, used directly as a protectant fungicide — no further synthesis required.
At room temperature it is a yellow, odourless crystalline solid, only sparingly soluble in water but soluble in acetone and other polar organic solvents.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain — two paths
As a crop-protection active, Dichloran is applied directly (after formulation) as a protectant fungicide against rot pathogens such as Botrytis, Monilinia, Rhizopus and Sclerotinia on fruits and vegetables — the compound itself is the finished active, not an intermediate. As a dye and pigment building block, the same compound is diazotized and coupled with a naphthol partner, in the same way as the other chloronitroanilines in our range, to build an azoic colourant.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline in technical grade (≈95% assay) for dye, pigment and general industrial use, and a higher-purity grade (98%+) suited to formulators who need tighter isomer and impurity control. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis so your incoming QC team can verify the parameters you ordered against.
How 2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline is manufactured from 2,6-dichloroaniline (or an equivalent dichlorobenzene precursor) by controlled ring nitration at the position para to the amino group. Because an unprotected primary amine strongly activates the ring and can be over-oxidized by nitrating mixtures, the amine is typically protected — most often by acetylation — before nitration, with the protecting group removed by hydrolysis once the nitro group is installed.
An alternative route builds the molecule from 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene or a related polychlorobenzene by nitration followed by selective ammonolysis of the chlorine activated by the resulting nitro group, leaving the two flanking chlorines in place.
After the key step, the crude product is washed, recrystallized and dried to remove unreacted starting material, regiochemical by-products and process salts before packing. For fungicide-formulation use, particle size reduction (milling) is typically carried out downstream by the formulator rather than at this intermediate stage.
Why this isomer is used both ways
The symmetrical 2,6-dichloro substitution pattern gives the molecule good chemical and thermal stability as a standalone compound — a useful property in a fungicide active that needs to remain effective on treated produce — while the same deactivated amine and ring chlorines are exactly what the dye industry wants in a diazo component for certain shades. It is one compound serving two markets, which is reflected in how it is packaged and documented depending on the buyer's end use.
Industries and processes that use it
2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline serves two distinct markets. The fields below cover the volume we see through our export desk, from both the agrochemical and the colourant sides of the business.
Protectant Fungicide Active (Dichloran)
Used directly, after formulation, as a protectant fungicide against Botrytis, Monilinia, Rhizopus and Sclerotinia rot pathogens on fruits, vegetables and ornamentals.
Azoic Dyes & Pigments
A diazo component in azoic (naphthol AS) dye and pigment manufacture: diazotized and coupled with a naphthol partner to build the colourant's chromophore.
Pharmaceutical Intermediates
Used as a dichloro-nitroaniline building block in pharmaceutical synthesis routes that call for this specific substitution pattern.
Agrochemical Research
Supplied for formulation development and analogue synthesis work in agrochemical R&D.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
For fungicide use the compound is applied essentially as-is, after formulation; for colourant use the deactivated amino group is diazotized and carried through the usual azoic-dye chemistry.
Direct Formulation (Fungicide Use)
For crop-protection use, the technical-grade active is milled to the required particle size and formulated (commonly as a wettable powder or suspension concentrate) without further chemical modification of the molecule itself.
Diazotization (Diazo Component Use)
Under strong acid conditions suited to heavily deactivated nitroanilines, the amino group is converted to a diazonium salt — the entry point for azoic dye and pigment coupling.
Azo Coupling
The diazonium salt is coupled with a naphthol AS-type coupler to form the azo (–N=N–) chromophore that gives the finished colourant its shade.
Nitro Group Reduction
Catalytic or chemical reduction of the nitro group gives the corresponding diaminodichlorobenzene, a route used in some pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis.

Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than 2,6-Dichloro-4-Nitroaniline.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Fatal if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled.
May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
Very toxic to aquatic life, with long-lasting effects.
Registered as a crop-protection active in some jurisdictions (including the US); not approved in others (including the EU) — confirm local regulatory status before use.
Treat as a high-hazard material; avoid any skin contact or dust inhalation.
Hazard classification of a finished fungicide formulation differs from the technical active; always refer to the specific formulation's own SDS and label.
Keep away from food, feed and water sources during storage and transport.
Danger — GHS06 toxic, GHS08 health hazard and GHS09 environmental pictograms commonly apply to the technical active.
Use impervious gloves, full eye/face protection and respiratory protection sized to the task; avoid any skin contact and work under local exhaust ventilation given the severity of this classification. This page covers the technical active only — a formulated crop-protection product has its own separate label and SDS with use-pattern-specific precautions. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from food, feed and incompatible chemicals. Technical Dichloran is a chemically stable solid under normal storage conditions, which is part of why it performs well as a fungicide active, but moisture pickup can still affect flow and milling characteristics. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay before it goes into formulation or synthesis.
