What 6-Chloro-2,4-Dinitroaniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place as one of the most heavily deactivated diazo-component building blocks we supply, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

6-Chloro-2,4-Dinitroaniline carries a chlorine and two nitro groups arranged around a single amino group — the most heavily substituted member of the chloronitroaniline family we supply. With two strongly electron-withdrawing nitro groups and a chlorine all acting on the same ring, the amino nitrogen is pulled far toward non-basic behaviour: this is a very weak base, and converting it to a diazonium salt requires the most forcing acid conditions of any compound in our chloronitroaniline range.

At room temperature it is a yellow crystalline solid, reported in the literature to exist in three distinguishable polymorphic (crystal) forms that differ in mechanical handling properties, though all represent the same chemical substance. It is only sparingly soluble in water, dissolving more readily in polar organic solvents such as acetone and DMF.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Despite its low basicity, this compound is used industrially as a diazo component for certain azoic and pigment chemistries where the extra nitro group shifts the coupled product's shade and lightfastness relative to the mono-nitro chloroanilines in our range. It is also used more broadly as a dinitroaromatic building block in fine-chemical synthesis.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers 6-Chloro-2,4-Dinitroaniline in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (98%+) for applications sensitive to isomer carryover or polymorphic form. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis so your incoming QC team can verify the parameters you ordered against.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How 6-Chloro-2,4-Dinitroaniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

6-Chloro-2,4-Dinitroaniline is manufactured from 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene by ammonolysis: the chlorine on that starting material is strongly activated toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution by the two flanking nitro groups (ortho and para to it), so reaction with ammonia under moderate pressure and temperature cleanly displaces the chlorine actually targeted for displacement and installs the amino group in a different ring position, leaving one chlorine and both nitro groups on the product.

Because 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene itself carries two chlorine-activating nitro groups, careful stoichiometric and temperature control is needed during ammonolysis to react at the intended position selectively and avoid over-substitution or the formation of related positional by-products.

After ammonolysis, the crude product is washed, recrystallized and dried to remove unreacted starting material, regiochemical by-products and ammonium salts before packing. This recrystallization step is also where the product's dominant polymorphic form is typically set.

Why this is among the more specialized grades we carry

With two nitro groups and a chlorine on the ring, there are several structurally similar chloro-dinitroaniline isomers that could form under slightly different reaction conditions. We qualify our manufacturing partners on regiochemical consistency for this specific grade, since buyers sourcing it for a defined dye or pigment shade need the exact substitution pattern reported on the certificate of analysis, not a close positional relative.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Two nitro groups make this the most deactivated amine in our chloronitroaniline range; the remaining ring chlorine, activated by the same nitro groups, is often the more reactive site.

Diazotization (Diazo Component Use)

Under the most forcing acid conditions used for this class of weakly basic amine, the amino group is converted to a diazonium salt for azoic dye and pigment coupling.

Azo Coupling

The diazonium salt is coupled with a naphthol AS-type coupler to form the azo (–N=N–) chromophore for the finished colourant.

Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution at Chlorine

The remaining ring chlorine, strongly activated by the two nitro groups, is readily displaced by amine, alkoxide or thiolate nucleophiles under mild conditions — often the more practical reactive handle on this molecule than the deactivated amine.

Nitro Group Reduction (Selective or Full)

Controlled catalytic or chemical reduction can target one or both nitro groups, giving mono- or diamino products used as further dye and fine-chemical intermediates.
