Folic Acid
The Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a widely mandated fortification vitamin central to cell division and neural-tube development — exported from Indonesia as fine yellow-orange crystalline powder with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Folic Acid is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the vitamin's chemistry, why it is among the most widely mandated fortification nutrients in the world, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Folic Acid is the synthetic, fully oxidised form of vitamin B9, built from three structural components — a pteridine ring, para-aminobenzoic acid, and glutamic acid — joined together into a single molecule that the body reduces and interconverts into the various active folate coenzyme forms used in DNA synthesis, cell division and amino-acid metabolism. Its best-known public-health role is the prevention of neural-tube birth defects when taken by women before and during early pregnancy, a finding so well established that folic acid fortification of staple foods (commonly wheat flour) is now mandated by law in a large and growing number of countries worldwide.
At room temperature it is a yellow to yellow-orange crystalline powder, essentially odourless, and practically insoluble in cold water, though it dissolves readily in dilute alkaline solution, the form in which it is often incorporated into liquid formulations. It is sensitive to light and will slowly degrade on prolonged exposure, a property that governs its packaging and storage more than any acute hazard does.
Where it fits in the value chain
Folic Acid's single largest volume use is mandatory flour and cereal fortification programmes, now required by national regulation across a large share of the world's wheat-consuming population specifically to reduce the incidence of neural-tube birth defects at a population level. A comparably important use is in prenatal and general multivitamin supplement formulation, where it is specifically recommended for women of childbearing age. Smaller but still significant volumes go into general food and beverage fortification beyond flour, and into animal feed premixes.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Folic Acid meeting USP/EP pharmacopoeial and FCC (food-chemical codex) specifications, suited to flour/cereal fortification, supplement formulation and animal-feed-premix use. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering assay, moisture and heavy metals.
How Folic Acid is produced
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Folic Acid is produced synthetically by assembling its three structural components in sequence: a pteridine precursor (commonly built up from a triaminopyrimidine and a suitable dicarbonyl compound) is condensed with para-aminobenzoic acid to form pteroic acid, which is then coupled with glutamic acid, typically via an activated ester or mixed-anhydride intermediate, to form the complete pteroylglutamic acid (folic acid) molecule. Each coupling step requires careful control to achieve good yield and to avoid forming related but biologically distinct folate impurities that must be removed in purification.
The crude product is purified by recrystallisation and, depending on the manufacturing partner's process, by further chromatographic or selective-precipitation purification to reach the assay and related-substance specification required of pharmacopoeial and food-grade material. Because the finished vitamin is light-sensitive, later purification, drying and packaging steps are run under light-controlled conditions to limit degradation before the product even reaches storage.
Industries and processes that use it
Folic Acid is consumed across mandatory food fortification, prenatal/general supplementation and animal feed premixes. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Flour & Cereal Fortification
Added to wheat flour and other cereal staples under mandatory national fortification programmes, specifically to reduce the population-level incidence of neural-tube birth defects.
Prenatal & General Multivitamin Supplementation
Formulated into prenatal and general multivitamin products, specifically recommended for women of childbearing age given folic acid's established role in healthy foetal neural-tube development.
General Food & Beverage Fortification
Added to a range of food and beverage products beyond mandated flour fortification, to meet voluntary or additional regulatory fortification levels.
Animal Feed Premixes
Included in livestock and companion-animal feed vitamin premixes to meet established nutritional requirements.
How the material is typically formulated forward
The vitamin's light sensitivity and low water solubility govern almost all of Folic Acid's further formulation behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished product.
Flour/Cereal Fortification Blending
Blended into a vitamin/mineral fortification premix that is then metered into flour or cereal product during milling or processing, at the concentration mandated by the relevant national fortification standard.
Multivitamin Tablet/Capsule Formulation
Blended with other vitamins, minerals and excipients and compressed into tablets or filled into capsules, often alongside iron and other prenatal-relevant nutrients.
Liquid Formulation (Alkaline Solubilisation)
Dissolved in dilute alkaline solution, since the free acid is practically insoluble in plain water, for incorporation into liquid vitamin formulations and fortified beverages.
Feed Premix Blending
Blended into a concentrated vitamin premix that is then incorporated at a low inclusion rate into complete animal feed formulations.
Folic Acid against related vitamin ingredients we supply
Buyers sourcing Folic Acid for fortification or supplement formulation often also need the other B-complex and fat-soluble vitamins in the same product. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.

Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than Folic Acid.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Not classified as hazardous under GHS; a recognised, widely mandated vitamin ingredient.
Combustible in dry powder form like most organic solids; store away from open flame.
Minimise airborne dust during milling and packing, as a standard good-practice measure for any fine powder.
Degrades on prolonged light exposure; not a safety hazard, but relevant to potency retention and shelf life.
Standard gloves and good hygiene practice are sufficient for routine handling.
Not classified; refer to the batch certificate of analysis and MSDS for full detail.
This product has a low hazard profile and is not classified as hazardous under GHS; it is a recognised, widely mandated vitamin ingredient handled under standard good-manufacturing-practice precautions rather than chemical-hazard protocols. Its sensitivity to light is a quality and potency consideration rather than a safety one, and is managed through light-protective packaging throughout the supply chain. Full handling and storage guidance is in the technical data sheet and MSDS issued with every shipment.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a dry, ambient-temperature, dark area in the original light-protective packaging, since the vitamin's potency can decline measurably on prolonged light exposure. Keep away from moisture and heat sources. Re-check assay on a batch held past its retest date before use, particularly before committing it to a mandated fortification programme with a defined minimum potency requirement.
