01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Ethylamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place as the simplest primary ethylamine, and the grade Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Ethylamine is the simplest primary ethyl amine: an ethyl group attached to a nitrogen carrying two N–H bonds and a lone pair, giving it the reactivity profile typical of a small primary aliphatic amine — a reasonably strong base, a good nucleophile toward carbonyls and alkylating agents, and ready formation of amides, imines and sulfonamides. At room temperature the pure substance is a colourless, flammable gas with a strong ammonia-like odour; because handling the anhydrous gas requires pressurised or refrigerated equipment, it is most commonly supplied and traded as a 70% aqueous solution.

It is co-produced industrially alongside its dialkylated relatives, diethylamine and triethylamine, from the same ethanol/ammonia feedstock, so buyers sourcing any one of the three often find it convenient to source a complementary grade of the others from the same supplier.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Ethylamine's best-known application is as a building block for chlorotriazine herbicides — atrazine and simazine both carry an ethylamino substituent introduced using this reagent. It is also used broadly in organic synthesis (as a small, reactive primary amine for amide, imine and sulfonamide formation), in rubber-chemical intermediate synthesis, and as a solvent for dissolving lithium metal in Birch reduction chemistry.

Grade we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Ethylamine as a 70% aqueous solution, the standard commercial trading form, suited to herbicide-intermediate and general organic-synthesis buyers alike. Each batch is supplied with a certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Ethylamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Ethylamine is manufactured by the catalytic reaction of ethanol with ammonia over an oxide catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, which simultaneously co-produces diethylamine and triethylamine: C₂H₅OH + NH₃ → C₂H₅NH₂ + H₂O. The ratio of the three ethylamines is controlled by the ethanol-to-ammonia feed ratio and reaction conditions, and the crude mixture is separated by fractional distillation. A secondary industrial route proceeds by reductive amination of acetaldehyde with ammonia and hydrogen over a metal catalyst.

Why the ethanol/ammonia route is preferred

Catalytic amination of ethanol is continuous, scalable and economically efficient because all three ethylamine co-products — mono-, di- and tri-ethylamine — have established commercial markets, so the process yields no unwanted by-product stream.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Ethylamine is consumed primarily by triazine-herbicide manufacture, with secondary demand from general organic synthesis, rubber chemistry and specialty reduction chemistry. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Triazine Herbicide Intermediate

A key reagent introducing the ethylamino substituent in atrazine and simazine, two of the most widely used chlorotriazine herbicides.

Field 02

General Organic Synthesis

Used broadly as a small, reactive primary amine for amide, imine and sulfonamide formation across fine-chemical synthesis.

Field 03

Rubber-Chemical Intermediate Chemistry

Incorporated into rubber-chemical intermediate synthesis as a small aliphatic amine building block.

Field 04

Birch Reduction Solvent

Used as a solvent for dissolving lithium metal in Birch reduction chemistry, a specialty application in academic and process research.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The primary amine's nucleophilicity and basicity govern almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways Ethylamine is converted into a finished intermediate.

Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

Displaces chloride from chlorotriazine intermediates to install the ethylamino group, the key step in atrazine and simazine manufacture.

Amide / Sulfonamide Formation

Reacts with acid chlorides, anhydrides and sulfonyl chlorides to give the corresponding amide or sulfonamide, a routine step in fine-chemical synthesis.

Reductive Amination Chemistry

Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to give imines that are reduced to secondary amines, used in some pharmaceutical intermediate sequences.

Salt Formation

Neutralisation with mineral or organic acids gives ethylamine salts, used in some specialty formulation chemistry.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

H220

Extremely flammable gas.

H319

Causes serious eye irritation.

H335

May cause respiratory irritation.

PPE Standard

Impervious gloves, chemical splash goggles and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.

Ignition Sources

Extremely flammable; keep away from open flames, sparks, static discharge and other ignition sources, and bond/ground containers during transfer.

Ventilation

Use in a well-ventilated area or under local exhaust ventilation to manage vapour concentration and odour.

Environmental Handling

Avoid any release to drains or waterways as a general amine-handling precaution.

Signal word

Danger — GHS02 flammable and GHS07 irritant pictograms apply.

This compound is an extremely flammable gas supplied as an aqueous solution; it causes serious eye irritation and may cause respiratory irritation. It must be handled with impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection in a well-ventilated area, kept away from all ignition sources. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
