01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Trimethylamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place as the simplest tertiary alkylamine, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Trimethylamine is the simplest tertiary amine: a nitrogen atom carrying three methyl groups and a lone pair that makes it a moderately strong, non-nucleophilically-hindered base and a competent nucleophile toward alkylating and acylating agents. At room temperature it is a colourless, flammable gas with an intensely fishy, ammoniacal odour — the same compound responsible for the characteristic smell of decaying fish and of certain floral scents at low concentration. Because the pure gas is awkward to transport and dose, it is supplied almost exclusively as an aqueous solution, typically in the 25 – 45% w/w range, or in pressurised gas cylinders for specialised users.

The molecule's basicity and its three methyl groups are what drive its downstream chemistry: it reacts readily with alkylating agents such as ethylene oxide, epichlorohydrin and alkyl halides to give quaternary ammonium salts, and its own nitrogen is incorporated whole into several important commercial molecules rather than being transformed further.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Trimethylamine's largest-volume industrial use is as the feedstock for choline chloride, made by reacting it with ethylene oxide and hydrochloric acid — choline chloride is itself a major animal-feed nutrient additive and a precursor to further quaternary ammonium chemistry. It is also the starting material for tetramethylammonium hydroxide (used in semiconductor photoresist developers and as a strong, non-nucleophilic base), for a range of cationic surfactants and flotation agents, for plant growth regulators and herbicide intermediates, and for strongly basic anion-exchange resins.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Trimethylamine as a 25% or 30% aqueous solution for standard choline and surfactant chemistry, and a 45% aqueous solution for buyers wanting to minimise the water content they ship and store. All grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Trimethylamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Trimethylamine is manufactured by the catalytic reaction of methanol with ammonia over an acidic solid catalyst (typically an alumina or silica-alumina type) at elevated temperature: 3 CH₃OH + NH₃ → (CH₃)₃N + 3 H₂O. The same reaction simultaneously produces methylamine and dimethylamine, and the ratio of the three products is controlled by the methanol-to-ammonia feed ratio, catalyst choice and reaction conditions. The crude product mixture is separated by fractional distillation, exploiting the different boiling points and basicities of the three methylamines, and the trimethylamine fraction is absorbed into water to the target concentration before packing.

Why the methanol/ammonia route is universal

Direct catalytic amination of methanol is the only industrially practised route to trimethylamine: it is continuous, scalable, and — because all three methylamine co-products have established commercial markets — economically efficient, since none of the three fractions is simply discarded.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Trimethylamine is consumed by animal-nutrition, surfactant and specialty-chemical manufacture. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Choline Chloride (Animal Feed Additive)

Reaction with ethylene oxide and hydrochloric acid gives choline chloride, a major nutrient additive in poultry and livestock feed.

Field 02

Quaternary Ammonium Surfactants

Alkylation with long-chain alkyl halides or epoxides gives cationic surfactants used in fabric softeners, biocides and flotation agents.

Field 03

Tetramethylammonium Hydroxide

Further methylation gives TMAH, a strong non-nucleophilic base used in semiconductor photoresist development.

Field 04

Ion-Exchange Resin Manufacture

Incorporated into strongly basic anion-exchange resins used in water treatment and process purification.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The nitrogen's basicity and nucleophilicity govern almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways Trimethylamine is converted into a finished intermediate.

Quaternisation

Reaction with an alkylating agent (an alkyl halide, epoxide or sulfate ester) gives a quaternary ammonium salt directly, the basis of choline chloride and most cationic surfactant chemistry.

Hofmann-Type Elimination

Quaternary ammonium hydroxides derived from trimethylamine undergo Hofmann elimination on heating, a classical route used in some alkene-synthesis sequences.

Acid-Base Salt Formation

Neutralisation with mineral or organic acids gives trimethylamine salts, used in some specialty formulation and corrosion-inhibitor chemistry.

Catalytic Base Chemistry

Used directly, without further transformation, as a volatile tertiary-amine base/catalyst in some polyurethane and specialty formulation systems.

PPE Standard

Impervious gloves, chemical splash goggles or a face shield, and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.

Ignition Sources

Extremely flammable; keep away from open flames, sparks, static discharge and other ignition sources, and bond/ground containers during transfer.

Signal word

Danger — GHS02 flammable, GHS05 corrosive and GHS07 harmful pictograms apply.

This compound is an extremely flammable gas supplied as an aqueous solution; it causes serious eye damage and skin irritation, is harmful if inhaled, and may cause respiratory irritation. It must be handled with impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection in a well-ventilated area, kept away from all ignition sources. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
