Isobutylamine
The branched-chain primary butylamine supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a building block across pharmaceutical, pesticide and rubber-chemical intermediate chemistry wherever an isobutyl-substituted primary amine is required — exported from Indonesia with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Isobutylamine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place among the four structural isomers of butylamine, and the grade Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Isobutylamine carries a primary amine on the terminal carbon of an isobutyl (2-methylpropyl) group — distinct from n-butylamine, in which the chain is unbranched, and from sec- and tert-butylamine, in which the amine sits on an internal or fully substituted carbon. As a primary amine it is a strong nucleophile and moderately strong base, forming amides, ureas and imines readily.
At room temperature it is a colourless, flammable liquid with an ammonia-like odour, miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is handled with the solvent-class precautions typical of low-boiling aliphatic amines.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
Isobutylamine is used as a building block across pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediate chemistry wherever an isobutyl-substituted primary amine is specifically required, and in rubber-chemical intermediate synthesis as an alternative branched aliphatic amine building block. Its branched structure, distinct from both n-butylamine and tert-butylamine, gives process chemists a further option when a particular reaction step calls for a specific steric or electronic profile at the nitrogen.
Grade we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Isobutylamine in technical grade (≈99% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99.5%+) for pharmaceutical-intermediate applications sensitive to colour and water content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How Isobutylamine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Isobutylamine is manufactured industrially by reacting isobutanol with ammonia in the presence of a catalyst, or by reacting isobutyl chloride directly with ammonia: (CH₃)₂CHCH₂OH + NH₃ → (CH₃)₂CHCH₂NH₂ + H₂O. A biologically inspired route — decarboxylation of the amino acid valine, either enzymatically with valine decarboxylase or by thermal decarboxylation — is also documented, though catalytic amination of isobutanol remains the dominant industrial method.
Why the isobutanol amination route is favoured at scale
Direct catalytic amination of isobutanol is continuous and scalable, using a widely available feedstock, and gives straightforward downstream distillation to the required purity.
Industries and processes that use it
Isobutylamine is consumed by pharmaceutical, pesticide and rubber-chemical intermediate manufacture wherever an isobutyl-substituted primary amine is specifically required. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Pharmaceutical Intermediate Chemistry
A building block in pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis wherever an isobutyl-substituted primary amine is required.
Pesticide Intermediate Chemistry
Used as a building block in some pesticide intermediate synthesis routes that specifically call for this branched isomer.
Rubber-Chemical Intermediate Chemistry
An alternative branched aliphatic amine building block in rubber-chemical intermediate synthesis.
General Amide & Urea Synthesis
Used broadly in organic synthesis for amide and urea formation across fine-chemical manufacture.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The primary amine's nucleophilicity and branched-chain shape govern almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways Isobutylamine is converted into a finished intermediate.
Amide / Urea Formation
Reacts with acid chlorides, isocyanates and anhydrides to give the corresponding amide or urea, a routine step in pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediate synthesis.
Sulfonamide Formation
Reacts with sulfonyl chlorides to give the corresponding sulfonamide, used in some pharmaceutical intermediate sequences.
Nucleophilic Substitution
Displaces suitable leaving groups on activated aliphatic or aromatic electrophiles, introducing the isobutylamino group directly.
Reductive Amination Chemistry
Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to give imines that are reduced to secondary amines, used in some fine-chemical sequences.
Isobutylamine against its other butylamine isomers we supply
Buyers sourcing isobutylamine often need to confirm it against one of its three other isomers, each with its own established industrial role. A quick reference to all four in our regular supply list.
| Product | CAS Number | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isobutylamine | 78-81-9 | Primary branched amine | The product on this page — the isobutyl-substituted butylamine isomer in our range. |
| n-Butylamine | 109-73-9 | Primary linear amine | The unbranched isomer, used in benomyl fungicide chemistry — see its product page. |
| sec-Butylamine | 13952-84-6 | Secondary-carbon amine | The isomer used directly as a citrus postharvest fungicide — see its product page. |
| tert-Butylamine | 75-64-9 | Primary branched amine | The isomer used in rubber accelerator and triazine herbicide chemistry — see its product page. |
Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than Isobutylamine.
Safety classification at a glance

Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
Toxic if swallowed.
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
Impervious gloves, chemical splash goggles or a face shield, and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.
Highly flammable; keep away from open flames, sparks, static discharge and other ignition sources, and bond/ground containers during transfer.
Use in a well-ventilated area or under local exhaust ventilation to manage vapour concentration and odour.
Avoid any release to drains or waterways as a general amine-handling precaution.
Danger — GHS02 flammable, GHS05 corrosive and GHS06 toxic pictograms apply.
This compound is a highly flammable, corrosive liquid that is toxic if swallowed and causes severe skin burns and eye damage. It must be handled with impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection in a well-ventilated area, kept away from all ignition sources. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, open flames and other ignition sources, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing agents and strong acids. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay, colour and water content before use.
