Para Phenylenediamine
Para Phenylenediamine is the best-known of the three phenylenediamine isomers -- a documented oxidative hair-dye component, the aramid-fibre monomer paired with terephthaloyl chloride (not terephthalic acid, a common misstatement we correct), and a precursor to rubber antioxidants, carrying a Category 1 (H317) skin-sensitiser classification we state without overreaching into a stronger sub-category it doesn't carry.
What Para Phenylenediamine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Para Phenylenediamine's two amino groups sit directly opposite each other on the ring, a geometry that makes it the most widely used of the three isomers in this part of our range, and also its most frequently misdescribed. We want to correct a specific, commonly repeated detail: this compound's well-known role as the aramid-fibre monomer behind materials like Kevlar is built by polycondensation with terephthaloyl chloride, the activated acid chloride -- not with terephthalic acid itself, as the reaction is sometimes loosely phrased. The acid chloride's reactivity is what actually drives the polymerisation; plain terephthalic acid does not react directly under the same conditions.
Its best-known and most safety-sensitive application is as an oxidising component in permanent (oxidative) hair-dye formulations, where it is a well-documented, common cause of allergic contact dermatitis; we state its skin-sensitisation classification at the harmonised Category 1 (H317) tier the data supports, without adding an unsupported "1A" (strong sensitiser) sub-category designation. We also note, factually and without sensationalising it, that cases of severe allergic reaction including angioedema have been documented in connection with unregulated "black henna" temporary tattoo products that use undiluted or excessive concentrations of this compound outside of its intended, regulated hair-dye-formulation use. Separately, it is a documented precursor to para-phenylenediamine-derived rubber antioxidants and antiozonants (such as the 6PPD/IPPD family), though the specific substituted derivatives used in that application are distinct compounds from the parent diamine itself.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
We supply Para Phenylenediamine itself as a fibre monomer, dye-chemistry component, and rubber-antioxidant precursor. We do not manufacture or supply finished aramid fibre, hair-dye products, tattoo inks, or rubber antioxidant formulations.
Grades we supply
99%+ technical and dye grades are both offered.
How Para Phenylenediamine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Para Phenylenediamine is made industrially by reduction of para-nitroaniline or by reduction of para-dinitrobenzene, converting the nitro group(s) to amino groups.
The reduction step uses catalytic hydrogenation under controlled conditions to ensure complete conversion while limiting oxidative degradation of the sensitive diamine product.
The crude product is purified by crystallisation and packed promptly under conditions that limit air and light exposure, since it darkens rapidly on standing -- more rapidly than either the ortho or meta isomer.
Terephthaloyl chloride, not terephthalic acid -- a correction worth making plainly
This compound's aramid-fibre chemistry is sometimes described as a reaction between para-phenylenediamine and terephthalic acid. That phrasing understates the actual chemistry: the industrial polycondensation uses terephthaloyl chloride, the activated acid chloride form, because the amine-acid-chloride reaction proceeds efficiently under the conditions used, where the plain carboxylic acid does not react directly at a useful rate. We state the correct, activated reagent here rather than repeat the simplified but technically inaccurate version.
Industries and processes that use it
Para Phenylenediamine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Para-Aramid Fibre Monomer
Polymerised with terephthaloyl chloride (the activated acid chloride, not plain terephthalic acid) to build the para-aramid polymer backbone used in high-strength aramid fibres.
Oxidative Hair-Dye Component
A well-documented oxidising component in permanent (oxidative) hair-dye formulations, subject to concentration limits and labelling requirements in major cosmetics regulatory frameworks given its skin-sensitiser classification.
Rubber Antioxidant/Antiozonant Precursor
A documented precursor to the broader family of para-phenylenediamine-derived rubber antioxidants and antiozonants, which are distinct, further-substituted compounds made from this parent diamine.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
Para Phenylenediamine's chemistry centres on its two amino groups, positioned directly opposite each other on the ring, which drives both its aramid-fibre polycondensation and its oxidative hair-dye coupling chemistry.
Polycondensation (aramid fibre)
Reaction with terephthaloyl chloride in a step-growth polycondensation builds the para-aramid polymer backbone -- the activated acid chloride, not plain terephthalic acid, is the actual reaction partner.
Oxidative coupling (hair-dye chemistry)
Under oxidative conditions in the presence of a coupler component, this diamine forms the coloured indo-dye products that are the basis of permanent oxidative hair-dye chemistry.
N-substitution (antioxidant precursor chemistry)
Further N-alkylation or N-arylation of the amino groups gives the substituted derivatives (such as those in the 6PPD/IPPD antioxidant family) used in rubber antioxidant and antiozonant chemistry.
Para Phenylenediamine against its near relatives
Para Phenylenediamine, Meta Phenylenediamine and Ortho Phenylenediamine are the three phenylenediamine isomers in this part of our range, each with distinct downstream chemistry despite sharing the same diamine functional pattern.

Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Harmful if swallowed.
Harmful in contact with skin.
May cause an allergic skin reaction.
Harmful if inhaled.
Very toxic to aquatic life.
Warning
Para Phenylenediamine carries an EU-sourced classification set: Signal word Warning; H302/H312/H332 (harmful, Acute Tox. 4 across oral/dermal/inhalation routes), H317 (Skin Sens. 1 -- stated at this tier, without an unsupported "1A" strong-sensitiser sub-designation), and H400 (Aquatic Acute 1). This compound is a well-documented, common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in oxidative hair-dye use, and severe reactions including angioedema have been documented in connection with unregulated black-henna temporary tattoo products using it at undiluted or excessive concentrations outside its intended, regulated use. IARC has not evaluated this substance as a carcinogen.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area protected from light and air, consistent with its rapid oxidative darkening and its skin-sensitiser classification. Full PPE is recommended for all handling, and exposure should be minimised given its well-documented sensitisation profile.
