Meta Phenylenediamine
Meta Phenylenediamine is a key monomer in meta-aramid fibre production (the fibre class that includes Nomex-type materials) and an established epoxy-resin curing agent, carrying a mutagen (H341) and skin-sensitiser classification that we disclose at its documented tier.
What Meta Phenylenediamine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Meta Phenylenediamine carries two amino groups positioned 1,3 (meta) on the benzene ring, a substitution pattern that -- unlike the ortho and para isomers elsewhere in this part of our range -- gives it the specific reactivity needed for high-performance aramid fibre chemistry. We want to be careful about one phrasing choice here: the best-known commercial fibre made from this chemistry is often named by a specific brand, but we describe the fibre class generically as a meta-aramid (meta-aramid, e.g. Nomex-type), since the monomer itself is not exclusive to any one manufacturer's branded product.
Its two other well-documented commercial roles are as a curing agent (hardener) for epoxy resins, where its two reactive amino groups cross-link epoxide chains, and historically as an intermediate in oxidative hair-dye formulations -- a use now significantly restricted or discontinued in several major cosmetics markets, which we note rather than imply as a current, unrestricted application.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
We supply Meta Phenylenediamine itself as a fibre-chemistry monomer and resin-curing agent. We do not manufacture or supply finished aramid fibre, cured epoxy products, or hair-dye formulations.
Grades we supply
99%+ fibre-grade material is the standard commercial offering for aramid-fibre applications; general technical grade is also available for epoxy-curing use.
How Meta Phenylenediamine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Meta Phenylenediamine is made industrially by reduction of meta-dinitrobenzene, itself made by nitration of nitrobenzene (or dinitration of benzene), converting both nitro groups to amino groups in one reduction step.
The reduction step uses catalytic hydrogenation under controlled conditions to ensure both nitro groups are fully converted, since partial reduction would give an unwanted nitroaniline by-product.
The crude product is purified by distillation or crystallisation and packed under conditions that limit air exposure, since the finished diamine readily darkens on contact with air.
Naming the fibre class, not a single brand
This compound's best-known downstream application is widely associated with one well-known branded fibre. We describe the application at the fibre-class level -- meta-aramid, of which that branded product is one example -- rather than naming the brand as if this monomer were used exclusively to make it. The underlying polymer chemistry (polycondensation with isophthaloyl chloride to form a meta-aramid) is the documented fact; which specific branded products a given manufacturer makes from it is a separate commercial matter we don't claim to track.
Industries and processes that use it
Meta Phenylenediamine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Meta-Aramid Fibre Monomer
A key monomer in meta-aramid fibre production (meta-aramid, e.g. Nomex-type materials), polymerised with isophthaloyl chloride to form the aramid backbone.
Epoxy Resin Curing Agent
Used as a curing agent (hardener) for epoxy resins, where its two amino groups cross-link epoxide chains.
Historical Oxidative Hair-Dye Intermediate
Historically used as an intermediate in oxidative hair-dye formulations, a use now significantly restricted or discontinued in several major cosmetics markets.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
Meta Phenylenediamine's chemistry centres on its two amino groups, whose 1,3 spacing on the ring is specifically what makes it useful for aramid-fibre polycondensation rather than the more hindered or differently-reactive ortho and para isomers.
Polycondensation (aramid fibre)
Reaction with isophthaloyl chloride in a step-growth polycondensation builds the meta-aramid polymer backbone, the basis of meta-aramid fibre production.
Epoxide cross-linking
The two amino groups react with epoxide rings in epoxy-resin formulations, cross-linking the resin during cure.
Oxidative coupling (historical dye chemistry)
Under oxidative conditions, this diamine participates in coupling reactions that build the coloured products of oxidative hair-dye chemistry, a historical and now-restricted application.
Meta Phenylenediamine against its near relatives
Meta Phenylenediamine, Ortho Phenylenediamine and Para Phenylenediamine are the three phenylenediamine isomers in this part of our range, each with distinct downstream chemistry despite sharing the same diamine functional pattern.

Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide rather than a specification sheet.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Harmful if swallowed.
Harmful in contact with skin.
May cause an allergic skin reaction.
Causes serious eye damage.
Suspected of causing genetic defects.
Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
Danger
Meta Phenylenediamine carries an EU-sourced classification set: Signal word Danger; H302/H312 (harmful, Acute Tox. 4), H317 (Skin Sens. 1), H318 (Eye Dam. 1), H341 (Muta. 2, suspected of causing genetic defects), and H411 (Aquatic Chronic 2). IARC has not evaluated this specific substance. We state the mutagenicity finding at its documented Category 2 ("suspected") tier and do not upgrade it to a confirmed-mutagen or carcinogenicity statement, since neither is supported by the harmonised classification.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area protected from light and air, consistent with its tendency to darken on air exposure and its skin-sensitiser/mutagen-suspected classification. Full PPE is recommended for all handling.
How it ships from Indonesia
Standard packing and export terms for this product. Confirm exact figures against your order — they vary slightly by destination and quantity.
What travels with every batch
Specification is agreed before the purchase order, not discovered on arrival. Every shipment of Meta Phenylenediamine leaves with a documented, checkable paper trail.
Certificate of Analysis
Batch-wise assay (by GC), isomer purity, melting point range and moisture, issued against the agreed specification so your QC team can check it, not just file it.
Safety Data Sheet
GHS-format SDS in English covering hazard classification, handling, storage, first-aid and spill response for the exact grade shipped.
Technical Data Sheet
Reference physical and chemical properties, recommended storage and typical applications, for internal circulation to your process or R&D teams.
Certificate of Origin
Confirms Indonesian origin for customs clearance and any preferential-duty claim at your destination port.
Dangerous Goods Declaration
UN packing group, classification and shipper's declaration prepared ahead of loading so documentation never holds up customs.
Third-Party Inspection
Independent pre-shipment inspection and re-sampling can be arranged on request, at your cost, for buyers who require it as a matter of policy.
