01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What N,N,4-Trimethylaniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

We want to confirm the naming here precisely, since it's easy to misread: in "N,N,4-Trimethylaniline," the "4" refers to a ring methyl group positioned para (at the 4-position) to the ring carbon carrying the N,N-dimethylamino group — this is the same compound as N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine, the para-substituted isomer, not an ortho- or meta-toluidine derivative. We verified this mapping against an ECHA Risk Assessment Committee document and standard IUPAC nomenclature rules before using it on this page.

This compound's most specifically and officially documented commercial use — more specifically sourced, in fact, than the broadly similar claim made for N,N-Dimethylaniline elsewhere in this range — is as a hardener/accelerator in acrylic (PMMA) resin systems used in dental fillings and bone-cement adhesives, confirmed directly in an ECHA RAC document. It is also used as a polymerisation accelerator in polyester and epoxy resin systems more broadly, and as an intermediate in photographic chemicals, dyes and medicines, though specific named products in those last three categories were not found in the sources we checked.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply N,N,4-Trimethylaniline itself as an accelerator and intermediate. We do not manufacture or supply finished dental materials, bone cements, cured resins, or any dye, photographic chemical or medicine made using it.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How N,N,4-Trimethylaniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

N,N,4-Trimethylaniline is made by N,N-dialkylation of p-toluidine with methanol or methyl halide under acid catalysis or pressure — the same general dialkylation strategy used for N,N-Dimethylaniline, applied to the ring-methylated toluidine starting material instead of plain aniline.

We want to be honest that we did not find this exact route explicitly documented in a primary source during this research pass; it is the chemically standard, expected analogue to the well-documented N,N-Dimethylaniline manufacturing route, and we present it on that basis.

The crude product is purified by distillation to separate it from unreacted p-toluidine and partially methylated intermediates, then tested for purity and colour before release, since accelerator-grade buyers in the dental and resin trade specify tight purity to ensure consistent, predictable cure performance.

A hazard classification genuinely in transition — flagged, not settled

This is worth stating carefully rather than simplifying. This compound currently sits under an existing EU Annex VI group entry covering toluidine isomers generally. We located an ECHA Risk Assessment Committee opinion proposing a new, substance-specific Annex VI entry with a considerably more severe classification — Carcinogen Category 1B (H350) among other statements — and a separate EU Council document referencing this compound for addition to a REACH Annex XVII consumer-product restriction list. As of this page's most recent review, we could not confirm these proposals have been formally adopted into EU law; we treat the stricter classification as pending, not yet in force, and recommend checking ECHA's current C&L Inventory before relying on a specific hazard statement. Separately, and already in force today rather than pending, California's Proposition 65 lists this compound as a carcinogen (since May 2014).

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

N,N,4-Trimethylaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Documented generically as an intermediate in photographic chemicals, dyes and medicines, though specific named end products in these categories were not found in the sources we checked.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

N,N,4-Trimethylaniline's chemistry mirrors N,N-Dimethylaniline's — an electron-rich ring and a basic tertiary nitrogen — with the added ring methyl group fine-tuning its reactivity and making it a slightly more electron-rich, slightly more effective accelerator in radical-curing resin chemistry.

Radical-generating redox chemistry (resin/dental curing)

In combination with a peroxide initiator, this compound promotes room-temperature free-radical curing of acrylic (PMMA), polyester and epoxy resin systems — the documented basis of its dental and bone-cement accelerator role.

Electrophilic substitution (specialty dye/photographic chemistry)

The electron-rich ring can undergo electrophilic substitution reactions relevant to its documented use as an intermediate in dyes and photographic chemicals, though specific named products weren't found in our research.

Base-mediated acid scavenging

Like other tertiary anilines, its basic nitrogen can absorb acid by-products in various synthesis reactions.

Signal word

Warning

This compound currently sits under an existing EU CLP Annex VI group entry (Index 612-056-00-9) covering toluidine isomers generally, reflected in the hazard statements above. We want to flag plainly that an ECHA Risk Assessment Committee opinion proposes a new, substance-specific Annex VI entry (seen referenced as Index 612-296-00-4) with a considerably more severe classification — Carc. 1B (H350), Acute Tox. 3 oral (H301), Acute Tox. 4 inhalation (H332), STOT RE 2 blood/respiratory (H373), Aquatic Chronic 3 (H412), signal word Danger — and a separate EU document proposes this compound for a REACH Annex XVII consumer-product restriction. As of our most recent check, we could not confirm either proposal has been formally adopted into EU law; treat the stricter classification as pending and verify the current entry on ECHA's C&L Inventory before relying on a specific hazard statement for compliance purposes. Separately and already in force, California's Proposition 65 lists this compound as a carcinogen (listed May 2014). IARC has not evaluated this substance.

04Is N,N,4-Trimethylaniline hazardous?+
Yes. It carries the GHS signal word Warning with the hazard statements listed in the hazard section of this page. It should be handled with appropriate PPE and in line with the safety data sheet supplied with each shipment.
05Is this a carcinogen?+
The picture here is genuinely in transition, and we want to be precise about it. This compound currently sits under an EU group entry for toluidine isomers generally, without an individual Carc. 1B classification yet formally in force — though a regulatory committee has proposed exactly that, pending adoption. Separately, and already in force today, California's Proposition 65 lists it as a carcinogen since 2014. We recommend checking ECHA's current C&L Inventory for the latest EU status before relying on a specific classification for compliance purposes.
06Is this the ortho or meta toluidine derivative?+
Neither — it's the para isomer. The "4" in "N,N,4-trimethylaniline" places the ring methyl group para (position 4) relative to the carbon carrying the N,N-dimethylamino group, making this compound N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine, not an ortho- or meta-substituted relative.
07Is this the same accelerator used in N,N-Dimethylaniline's dental/bone-cement applications?+
They're closely related and serve a similar accelerator function, but this compound's dental/bone-cement accelerator role is the more specifically and officially documented of the two — confirmed directly in an ECHA regulatory document, where N,N-Dimethylaniline's identical general application rests on broader, well-established chemical-industry knowledge rather than that same level of specific sourcing.
08What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 220 kg drums, with ibc / iso tank available for bulk orders. Trial quantities from a single drum can usually be arranged before you commit to larger volumes.
09How long does delivery take?+
Typical lead time is two to four weeks plus transit, depending on whether the grade is ex-stock or made to order and your destination port. A firm date is confirmed in the written quotation.
10Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
11How is N,N,4-Trimethylaniline manufactured?+
p-Toluidine N,N-dialkylation of p-toluidine with methanol or methyl halide under acid catalysis or pressure (expected route by analogy to N,N-dimethylaniline manufacture; not independently confirmed via a specific process source) is the usual industrial route, followed by washing and distillation or recrystallisation before packing.
12What is the shelf life, and how should it be stored?+
Typical shelf life is around 24 months in original, unopened packaging stored as described in the storage section of this page. If a batch is held beyond its shelf life, we recommend re-checking assay and moisture before use.
