01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What N,N-Diethylaniline is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

N,N-Diethylaniline carries two ethyl groups on aniline's amino nitrogen rather than the two methyl groups of its simpler relative elsewhere in this part of our range. We want to be direct about something: in researching this page, we specifically checked for a documented local-anesthetic-chain use and a rubber-chemical-intermediate use sometimes associated with this compound in general trade descriptions, and we could not independently confirm either in the primary sources we reviewed. Rather than publish unverified claims, we omit them and describe only what the evidence actually supports.

What is well documented is its role as a dye intermediate in triarylmethane dye chemistry — specifically named sources confirm its use in the synthesis of brilliant green and ethyl violet (and related Patent Blue-type dyes), a direct parallel to N,N-Dimethylaniline's role in malachite green and crystal violet. Separately, its borane complex (N,N-diethylaniline borane, DEANB) is a known, if specialty, reducing agent used in organic and pharmaceutical synthesis laboratories — a real but smaller-scale, specialty-reagent use rather than a bulk industrial application.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply N,N-Diethylaniline itself. We do not manufacture or supply the finished dyes made from it, nor the borane complex reagent.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How N,N-Diethylaniline is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

N,N-Diethylaniline is made, by direct analogy to N,N-Dimethylaniline's manufacture, by N-alkylation of aniline with ethanol (or diethyl sulfate) under acid catalysis and elevated temperature and pressure.

We want to be honest that we did not find this exact route explicitly documented in a primary source during this research pass — it is the chemically standard, expected analogue to the well-documented methylation route used for N,N-Dimethylaniline, and we present it as the expected route on that basis rather than as independently confirmed.

The crude product is purified by distillation to separate it from unreacted aniline and partially ethylated intermediates, then tested for purity and colour before release.

Being honest about which uses we could and couldn't confirm

General trade literature sometimes lists this compound against a local-anesthetic synthesis chain or as a rubber-chemical intermediate. We looked specifically for primary documentation of either use and did not find it. We would rather describe this compound by its confirmed dye-intermediate and specialty-reagent uses than repeat a broader set of claims we couldn't independently stand behind.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

N,N-Diethylaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Triarylmethane Dye Intermediate

A documented intermediate in the synthesis of brilliant green, ethyl violet, and related Patent Blue-type triarylmethane dyes.

Field 02

Specialty Reducing-Agent Precursor

Its borane complex (N,N-diethylaniline borane) is a known specialty reducing agent used in organic and pharmaceutical synthesis laboratories — a smaller-scale, specialty use rather than a bulk industrial one.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

N,N-Diethylaniline's reaction chemistry mirrors its simpler methyl relative: an electron-rich ring for electrophilic substitution in dye synthesis, and a basic nitrogen that can form specialty complexes such as its borane adduct.

Electrophilic substitution (dye chemistry)

The electron-rich ring undergoes condensation-type electrophilic substitution reactions that build triarylmethane dye structures such as brilliant green and ethyl violet.

Borane complex formation

Reaction with a borane source gives N,N-diethylaniline borane (DEANB), a specialty reducing agent used in organic and pharmaceutical synthesis.

Base-mediated acid scavenging

Like other tertiary anilines, this compound's basic nitrogen can absorb acid by-products in various synthesis reactions, a straightforward consequence of its basicity.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

N,N-Diethylaniline against its near relatives

N,N-Diethylaniline, N,N-Dimethylaniline and N,N,4-Trimethylaniline are the three tertiary anilines in this part of our range.

Signal word

Danger

No harmonised EU CLP Annex VI entry was located for this substance. A commercial SDS we checked lists: Signal word Danger; H227 (combustible), H301/H311/H331 (toxic by all three exposure routes, Acute Tox. 3), H373 (STOT RE 2, blood), and H411 (aquatic chronic 2). Japan's NITE self-classification gives a milder acute-toxicity set (H302/H332, Category 4) with the organ-damage statement split slightly differently across H371/H373 — a genuine discrepancy between sources that we flag rather than resolve silently; the stricter, more commercial-SDS-aligned set is shown above. No aspiration-hazard statement (H304) was found documented for this compound in any source checked. IARC has not evaluated this substance.
