2-Hydrazino-4-Methylbenzothiazole
A heterocyclic hydrazine building block supplied by Chelora Chemicals — the benzothiazole core and reactive hydrazino group combine to make this a versatile intermediate for dye, agrochemical and heterocyclic pharmaceutical synthesis — exported from Indonesia with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What 2-Hydrazino-4-Methylbenzothiazole is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, how it combines a benzothiazole ring with a reactive hydrazine, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
2-Hydrazino-4-Methylbenzothiazole (HMBT) is a benzothiazole heterocycle carrying a hydrazino (–NH–NH₂) group at the 2-position of the ring and a methyl group at the 4-position. The benzothiazole ring system is already a well-established pharmacophore and dye-chemistry scaffold in its own right, and attaching a hydrazine to it at the reactive 2-position gives a building block that condenses readily with aldehydes and ketones to form hydrazones, and participates in further heterocyclic ring-closure chemistry to build fused triazole, thiadiazole and related systems.
At room temperature it is an off-white to light yellow crystalline solid. It has limited water solubility but dissolves in common polar organic solvents, and like other substituted hydrazines is handled with particular care given the acute toxicity and irritancy typically associated with this functional-group class.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
HMBT is used primarily as an intermediate in dye and specialised organic-molecule synthesis, and finds further application in agrochemical intermediate chemistry, where the benzothiazole-hydrazine combination is a recognised building block for heterocyclic fungicide and other crop-protection actives. The hydrazine group's condensation chemistry with carbonyl compounds is also exploited in broader heterocyclic and pharmaceutical-intermediate research.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 2-Hydrazino-4-Methylbenzothiazole in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (98%+) for applications sensitive to colour or isomeric carryover. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How 2-Hydrazino-4-Methylbenzothiazole is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
2-Hydrazino-4-Methylbenzothiazole is manufactured from the corresponding 2-chloro-4-methylbenzothiazole (or the equivalent 2-mercapto precursor activated for substitution), by nucleophilic displacement with hydrazine hydrate under controlled temperature. The ring position bearing the leaving group is activated for nucleophilic aromatic substitution by the adjacent ring nitrogen and sulfur of the thiazole system, allowing the hydrazine to displace it under comparatively mild conditions.
After the substitution step, the crude product is separated from residual hydrazine and salts, washed, and crystallised to the required purity and colour before packing.
Why the benzothiazole core is activated for this chemistry
The thiazole ring's nitrogen and sulfur both help stabilise the transition state for nucleophilic substitution at the 2-position, which is the same general activation pattern that makes 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and related 2-substituted benzothiazoles broadly useful as synthetic intermediates across the dye, rubber-chemical and agrochemical industries.
Industries and processes that use it
2-Hydrazino-4-Methylbenzothiazole is consumed mainly as a dye and agrochemical intermediate, exploiting the hydrazine group's condensation and heterocycle-forming chemistry. The fields below cover the uses we see through our export desk.
Dye Intermediate Chemistry
Used as an intermediate in the synthesis of dyes, exploiting the benzothiazole-hydrazine combination's heterocycle-forming chemistry.
Agrochemical Intermediate Chemistry
A recognised building block in heterocyclic agrochemical synthesis, where the benzothiazole-hydrazine scaffold contributes to fungicide and related crop-protection active structures.
Hydrazone & Heterocycle Formation
Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to form hydrazones, and participates in further ring-closure chemistry to build fused triazole and thiadiazole heterocyclic systems.
Pharmaceutical Intermediate Research
Used in heterocyclic pharmaceutical-intermediate research exploiting the reactive hydrazine group's condensation chemistry.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The hydrazino group is the principal reactive handle, condensing with carbonyl compounds and participating in heterocycle-forming ring closures. Reaction classes below cover the main ways this material is converted downstream.
Hydrazone Formation
Condensation with an aldehyde or ketone under mild acid catalysis gives the corresponding hydrazone, a key step in building more complex heterocyclic and agrochemical structures.
Cyclisation to Fused Heterocycles
Under suitable conditions, the hydrazine nitrogen atoms participate in ring-closure reactions with appropriate co-reactants to build fused triazole or thiadiazole systems annulated onto the benzothiazole core.
Acylation of the Hydrazine
The hydrazine can be acylated at either nitrogen to give hydrazide derivatives, used in further heterocyclic and agrochemical synthesis.
Diazotisation-Type Chemistry (Specialty Routes)
Under specific oxidative conditions, substituted hydrazines of this type can be converted to other nitrogen-functionalised derivatives in specialty synthesis routes.

Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Toxic if swallowed.
Causes skin irritation.
Causes serious eye irritation.
May cause respiratory irritation.
Substituted hydrazines as a class are associated with broader toxicological concerns including possible mutagenic potential; handle with care beyond what the listed H-codes alone suggest.
Impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.
Crystalline powder can generate dust; local exhaust ventilation is recommended during transfer and weighing.
Danger — GHS06 acute toxicity pictogram applies.
This compound is toxic if swallowed and causes skin and eye irritation along with possible respiratory irritation; as with substituted hydrazines generally, it should be handled with particular care beyond routine irritant precautions. Impervious gloves, full eye/face protection and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling, with attention to dust control during transfer. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, oxidizing agents and strong acids, in tightly closed original packaging. Avoid generating or accumulating dust during handling. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay, melting point and colour before use.
