01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What 2,5-Dichloro Phenol is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, how its phenolic hydroxyl and two chlorines each offer their own reaction chemistry, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

2,5-Dichloro Phenol is a benzene ring carrying a hydroxyl group at position 1 and chlorine atoms at positions 2 and 5. Like other chlorophenols, it combines the acidic, nucleophilic phenolic oxygen (useful for etherification and esterification) with two ring chlorines that are not strongly activated for nucleophilic displacement by the hydroxyl alone, but which do direct any further electrophilic substitution on the ring and contribute to the molecule's characteristic lipophilicity and antimicrobial-adjacent chlorophenol chemistry.

At room temperature it is a white to light yellow crystalline solid with the characteristic sharp, medicinal odour typical of chlorinated phenols. It is only slightly soluble in water but dissolves readily in common organic solvents, and like other chlorophenols is handled as a toxic and corrosive material under full MSDS guidance.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

The phenolic hydroxyl is readily converted to ethers and esters, making this compound a useful building block wherever a dichlorophenoxy or dichlorophenyl ester fragment is required in dye, agrochemical or pharmaceutical intermediate chemistry. It is also used directly as a fine-chemical reference compound and as a starting material in broader chlorophenol derivative synthesis.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers 2,5-Dichloro Phenol in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99%+) for applications sensitive to colour or isomeric carryover. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How 2,5-Dichloro Phenol is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

2,5-Dichloro Phenol is manufactured by the controlled chlorination of phenol with chlorine gas or a chlorinating agent under catalysed conditions, or by hydrolysis of the corresponding dichlorobenzene under alkaline, high-temperature conditions. Phenol's hydroxyl group is itself an activating, ortho/para-directing substituent, so achieving the specific 2,5-substitution pattern (rather than the more commonly favoured 2,4- or 2,6-patterns) requires careful control of chlorination stoichiometry, temperature and catalyst to steer the reaction toward this particular isomer.

After chlorination, the crude product is separated from unreacted phenol and other chlorophenol isomers, washed, and crystallised to the required purity and colour before packing.

Why isomer control matters here

Because phenol chlorination can give a range of mono-, di- and trichlorophenol isomers depending on conditions, the purification train for 2,5-dichlorophenol specifically has to separate it cleanly from its close chlorophenol relatives — buyers with isomer-sensitive downstream chemistry should confirm the isomeric purity specification against their process needs before ordering.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

2,5-Dichloro Phenol is consumed mainly as a building block for dichlorophenoxy and dichlorophenyl ester intermediates across dye, agrochemical and pharmaceutical synthesis. The fields below cover the uses we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Dye & Pigment Intermediate Chemistry

The phenolic hydroxyl is etherified or esterified to build dichlorophenoxy and dichlorophenyl ester fragments used in dye and pigment intermediate synthesis.

Field 02

Agrochemical Intermediate Chemistry

Used as a building block in agrochemical synthesis routes that call for a dichlorophenoxy or dichlorophenyl ester fragment.

Field 03

Pharmaceutical Intermediate Chemistry

Used in pharmaceutical-intermediate synthesis requiring a dichlorophenol building block.

Field 04

Fine-Chemical Reference & Specialty Synthesis

Used as a well-characterised chlorophenol reference compound and specialty synthesis building block.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The phenolic hydroxyl is the principal reactive handle, with the two ring chlorines generally carried through unchanged into the finished intermediate. Reaction classes below cover the main ways this material is converted downstream.

Etherification (Williamson-Type)

Reaction with an alkyl or aryl halide under basic conditions displaces the phenolic hydroxyl's proton to form the corresponding ether, a common route to dichlorophenoxy fragments.

Esterification

Reaction with an acyl chloride or anhydride gives the corresponding dichlorophenyl ester, used in further dye and agrochemical intermediate synthesis.

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution

Further electrophilic substitution on the ring, directed by the hydroxyl and the existing chlorines, can introduce additional substituents for more complex target molecules.

Salt Formation

The acidic phenolic hydroxyl forms well-characterised salts with bases, used in some purification and formulation steps downstream.
