What Vitamin E Acetate is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the vitamin ester's chemistry, why the acetate form is used rather than free tocopherol, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Vitamin E Acetate is the acetate ester of alpha-tocopherol, the principal active form of vitamin E, formed by capping tocopherol's single free phenolic hydroxyl group with an acetyl group. That single chemical modification is what makes the compound commercially practical: free tocopherol's phenolic hydroxyl is also the site of its antioxidant activity, meaning the free vitamin itself is consumed and degraded over time simply by doing its job as an antioxidant, whereas the acetate ester is chemically stable and essentially inert to oxidation until it is hydrolysed back to active tocopherol by esterases in the digestive tract after ingestion, or by skin esterases after topical application.

At room temperature the liquid grade is a pale yellow to amber, viscous, oily liquid, insoluble in water but freely soluble in oils, fats and most organic solvents, reflecting tocopherol's fundamentally fat-soluble, vitamin-E-family chemistry. A dry grade is also produced, in which the oil is adsorbed onto a solid carrier (commonly silica or a gelatin-starch matrix) to give a free-flowing powder or beadlet suited to tablet and dry-powder formulation where the neat oil would be impractical to handle.

Where it fits in the value chain

Vitamin E Acetate's largest use is as the vitamin E source in human multivitamin and targeted antioxidant supplement formulations, where the dry beadlet grade is typically specified for tablet and capsule manufacture and the liquid grade for softgel and oil-based formulations. A comparably large volume is used in animal feed premixes, where vitamin E is an essential, feed-mandated nutrient supporting immune function and reproductive health across livestock and aquaculture species. A separate, large cosmetic and skincare use exploits the same stability advantage topically, incorporating the acetate ester into creams, lotions and sun-care products where it provides both a marketed vitamin E benefit and some antioxidant protection of the formulation itself once hydrolysed.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Vitamin E Acetate in liquid (oil) grade for softgel and oil-based formulation, and dry 50% beadlet grade (on a silica or gelatin-starch carrier) for tablet, capsule and dry-powder formulation. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering assay and physical form specification.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Vitamin E Acetate is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Vitamin E Acetate is produced by acetylating alpha-tocopherol with acetic anhydride (or an equivalent acetylating agent), typically in the presence of a base catalyst, which caps the tocopherol molecule's single free phenolic hydroxyl group with an acetyl group to form the ester. Alpha-tocopherol itself is produced either by total chemical synthesis, condensing trimethylhydroquinone with isophytol under acid catalysis to build the complete tocopherol structure (giving the synthetic dl- racemic mixture used in most commercial vitamin E acetate), or by extraction and purification from vegetable oil sources, giving the natural d- form.

For the dry beadlet grade, the liquid acetylated oil is subsequently adsorbed onto a solid carrier matrix (commonly silica, or a gelatin-starch coacervate system) under controlled spray-drying or similar processing, which converts the inherently oily liquid into a free-flowing solid powder or beadlet suited to tablet and dry-powder formulation. The acetate ester's chemical stability, relative to free tocopherol, is what makes this downstream solid-form processing practical, since the free vitamin would be considerably more prone to oxidative loss during the same processing steps.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Vitamin E Acetate is consumed across human supplementation, animal feed premixes and cosmetic/skincare formulation. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Multivitamin & Antioxidant Supplement Formulation

Formulated into tablets, capsules and softgels as the vitamin E source, with the dry beadlet grade typically specified for solid dosage forms and the liquid grade for softgel and oil-based products.

Field 02

Animal Feed & Aquaculture Premixes

Included in livestock, poultry and aquaculture vitamin premixes, where vitamin E supports immune function and reproductive health across most commercial diets.

Field 03

Cosmetic & Skincare Formulation

Incorporated into creams, lotions and sun-care products, exploiting the ester's chemical stability to deliver a marketed vitamin E benefit and antioxidant protection once hydrolysed on skin contact.

Field 04

Food Fortification

Added to select fortified food and beverage products to meet voluntary or regulatory vitamin E fortification levels.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the material is typically formulated forward

The acetate ester's oxidative stability and fat solubility govern almost all of Vitamin E Acetate's further formulation behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished product.

Softgel/Liquid Formulation

The liquid oil grade is blended directly into a softgel fill formulation or oil-based liquid product, exploiting its fat solubility and compatibility with other oil-soluble actives.

Tablet/Capsule Formulation (Dry Beadlet)

The dry 50% beadlet grade is blended with other vitamins, minerals and tablet excipients and compressed into tablets or filled into capsules, avoiding the handling difficulty the neat oil would present in a dry powder blend.

Topical Formulation Blending

Incorporated into the oil phase of a cream, lotion or sun-care emulsion, where it remains stable through formulation and storage until hydrolysed by skin esterases after application.

In Vivo Hydrolysis to Active Tocopherol

After ingestion or topical application, esterase enzymes cleave the acetate ester bond, releasing the biologically active free tocopherol and acetic acid — the step that actually delivers the vitamin's intended activity.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Low Hazard Profile

Not classified as hazardous under GHS; a recognised, widely used vitamin ingredient.

Combustible Liquid/Solid

Combustible given its organic, oil-based composition; store away from open flame.

Oxidation Stability

Markedly more oxidation-stable than free tocopherol, the entire purpose of the acetate ester form.

Dust Control (Dry Grade)

Minimise airborne dust during milling and packing of the dry beadlet grade, as a standard good-practice measure.

PPE Standard

Standard gloves and good hygiene practice are sufficient for routine handling.

Signal word

Not classified; refer to the batch certificate of analysis and MSDS for full detail.

This product has a low hazard profile and is not classified as hazardous under GHS; it is a recognised, widely used vitamin ingredient handled under standard good-manufacturing-practice precautions rather than chemical-hazard protocols. Both the liquid oil and dry beadlet grades are combustible in the general sense that most organic materials are, so standard storage practice away from open flame applies. Full handling and storage guidance is in the technical data sheet and MSDS issued with every shipment.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, ambient, dark
ContainerSealed drums (liquid) / moisture-barrier bags (dry)
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is Vitamin E Acetate used for?+
Predominantly as the vitamin E source in multivitamin and antioxidant supplement formulations (tablets, capsules and softgels), animal feed and aquaculture premixes, and cosmetic/skincare formulation; also used in some food fortification.
02Why is the acetate ester used instead of free vitamin E (tocopherol)?+
Because free tocopherol's antioxidant activity comes from the same phenolic hydroxyl group that also makes it prone to oxidative degradation over time, capping that hydroxyl with an acetyl group removes both the reactivity and the vulnerability, giving a chemically stable ingredient that survives formulation and storage reliably, releasing the active free vitamin only after esterase enzymes cleave the ester bond in the body or on skin.
03How is Vitamin E Acetate produced?+
By acetylating alpha-tocopherol with acetic anhydride under base catalysis; the tocopherol itself may be produced by total synthesis (condensing trimethylhydroquinone with isophytol, giving the synthetic dl- form) or extracted from vegetable oil sources (giving the natural d- form).
04What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply liquid (oil) grade for softgel and oil-based formulation, and dry 50% beadlet grade (on a silica or gelatin-starch carrier) for tablet, capsule and dry-powder formulation. Each grade ships with a certificate of analysis.
