Hydroxylamine Sulfate
The Hydroxylamine Sulfate supplied by Chelora Chemicals — the key oxime-forming reagent behind the caprolactam/nylon-6 route and a range of pharma and agro syntheses — exported from Indonesia as fine crystalline solid with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Hydroxylamine Sulfate is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the reagent's chemistry, its central role in the caprolactam manufacturing route, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Hydroxylamine Sulfate is the stable, solid sulfate salt of hydroxylamine, a small, highly reactive nitrogen-oxygen compound that is itself far too unstable and prone to explosive decomposition to store or transport as the free base; forming the sulfate salt is what makes hydroxylamine chemistry practical to handle at industrial scale. Its defining reactivity is forming oximes from ketones and aldehydes — the nitrogen atom of hydroxylamine condenses with the carbonyl carbon, releasing water and leaving a C=N-OH oxime group in place of the original C=O — a transformation that sits at the very start of one of the chemical industry's highest-volume downstream products.
At room temperature it is a white, crystalline, freely water-soluble solid, supplied and handled as an aqueous solution in much of its industrial use given how it is consumed in solution-phase reactions. It is a mild reducing agent and oxidising agent depending on reaction partner, and like hydroxylamine itself, it should be treated with care around strong oxidisers given the nitrogen-oxygen bond's underlying reactivity.
Where it fits in the value chain
Hydroxylamine Sulfate's largest single industrial use, by a wide margin, is reacting with cyclohexanone to form cyclohexanone oxime, the direct precursor that then undergoes the acid-catalysed Beckmann rearrangement to produce caprolactam — the monomer for Nylon 6 that we supply elsewhere in our catalogue. This single reaction chain accounts for the great majority of global hydroxylamine demand. Beyond that core use, the same oxime-forming reactivity is used across pharmaceutical and agrochemical fine-chemical synthesis wherever an oxime intermediate is a required synthetic step, and in smaller volume as a reducing agent in certain analytical and specialty chemical applications.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Hydroxylamine Sulfate in technical/industrial grade suited to caprolactam and other large-volume oxime-forming reactions, and a higher-purity grade with tighter iron and trace-metal control for pharmaceutical and fine-chemical intermediate synthesis. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How Hydroxylamine Sulfate is produced
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Hydroxylamine Sulfate is produced industrially by one of several routes, the most common being the catalytic reduction of nitric oxide or nitrous acid-derived nitrogen species with hydrogen over a platinum catalyst in a sulphuric acid medium, which forms hydroxylamine directly as its sulfate salt in the same reaction vessel it will later be stored and shipped in, avoiding the need to isolate free hydroxylamine at any point. An alternative, older route reduces nitrate or nitrite salts electrolytically, or via a sulphur dioxide/nitric oxide reduction (the Raschig process), again forming the sulfate (or related ammonium) salt directly rather than isolating the free base.
Because free hydroxylamine itself is markedly unstable and can decompose explosively above a moderate concentration or temperature, every commercial production route is designed specifically to form and retain the stable sulfate (or equivalent) salt from the earliest practical point in the process, with the free base never isolated or shipped as such. The crystalline product is recovered from the reaction mixture by evaporation and crystallisation, then dried and screened to the target particle size.
Industries and processes that use it
Hydroxylamine Sulfate is consumed predominantly by caprolactam/Nylon 6 manufacture, with smaller volumes into pharma, agro and analytical chemistry. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Caprolactam / Nylon 6 Manufacture
Reacted with cyclohexanone to form cyclohexanone oxime, the direct precursor to caprolactam via the Beckmann rearrangement — by far the largest single use of this reagent worldwide.
Pharmaceutical Oxime Intermediate Synthesis
Used to form oxime intermediates in the synthesis of various pharmaceutical actives, exploiting the same ketone/aldehyde-to-oxime reactivity.
Agrochemical Intermediate Synthesis
Used in the manufacture of certain oxime-carbamate insecticide active ingredients, where the oxime group is a key structural feature of the finished molecule.
Analytical & Specialty Reducing-Agent Use
Used in smaller volume as a reducing agent in certain analytical determinations and specialty chemical processes.
How the reagent is typically used forward
The reagent's nitrogen-centred nucleophilicity toward carbonyl compounds governs almost all of Hydroxylamine Sulfate's further use. The categories below account for most of the ways it is applied in downstream synthesis.
Oxime Formation (Caprolactam Route)
Reacted with cyclohexanone under mildly acidic or buffered aqueous conditions, the hydroxylamine nitrogen condenses with the ketone carbonyl to form cyclohexanone oxime, releasing water.
Beckmann Rearrangement (Downstream Step)
The cyclohexanone oxime formed in the previous step is treated with a strong acid catalyst, which rearranges the oxime into caprolactam, the seven-membered lactam monomer for Nylon 6, in a molecular ring-expansion reaction.
Pharmaceutical/Agrochemical Oxime Formation
Reacted with other ketone or aldehyde intermediates under similar conditions to form the oxime intermediate required in a given pharmaceutical or agrochemical synthetic route.
Reduction Reactions
Used as a mild reducing agent in certain analytical and specialty chemical reactions, exploiting the nitrogen-oxygen bond's redox reactivity.

Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than Hydroxylamine Sulfate.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Harmful if swallowed.
Causes skin irritation.
Causes serious eye damage.
Suspected of causing genetic defects.
Toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
Chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask are the baseline for routine handling.
Warning
This product is harmful if swallowed, causes skin irritation and serious eye damage on contact, is suspected of causing genetic defects, and is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects, so release to drains and watercourses should be avoided. Routine handling calls for chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection and a dust mask. Keep away from strong oxidising agents given the underlying reactivity of the nitrogen-oxygen bond. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry area in tightly closed containers, strictly away from strong oxidising agents and heat sources, given the underlying reactivity of the hydroxylamine nitrogen-oxygen bond even in its stabilised sulfate salt form. Keep away from direct sunlight and sources of ignition. Re-check assay and free acidity on a batch held past its retest date before use, particularly before committing it to a controlled oxime-forming reaction.
