01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Nylon 6 is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the resin's single-monomer chemistry, how that sets it apart from Nylon 66, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Nylon 6 is a polyamide built from a single monomer, caprolactam, whose seven-membered ring is opened and strung together end-to-end during polymerisation to form the repeating amide linkage that defines every nylon. Needing only one monomer rather than a matched pair, as Nylon 66 does, gives Nylon 6 production a measure of flexibility that the two-monomer route doesn't have, and the resin itself combines high tensile strength, good toughness and abrasion resistance, and strong resistance to oils, greases and many common solvents.

At room temperature it is supplied as a translucent to opaque white pellet, semi-crystalline once cooled from the melt. Like all nylons it is markedly hygroscopic, absorbing several percent of its own weight in atmospheric moisture at equilibrium, which both plasticises the resin (its properties shift measurably between dry-as-moulded and moisture-equilibrated states) and must be managed by thorough drying before any melt processing.

Where it fits in the value chain

Nylon 6 is split across two very different major uses that happen to share the same base chemistry: textile and carpet fibre, where it is melt-spun into yarn valued for its resilience and dye affinity, and engineering resin, often glass-fibre-reinforced, moulded into automotive under-the-hood parts, gears, bearings and industrial components where its strength-to-weight ratio and wear resistance let it replace metal in many applications. A cast form, polymerised directly in a mould from monomer rather than extruded from pre-made pellet, is used for very large or thick industrial parts that would be difficult to injection mould.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Nylon 6 across injection-moulding, fibre/yarn, glass-fibre-reinforced and cast grades, differentiated mainly by relative viscosity and additive package. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering relative viscosity, moisture content and, for reinforced grades, glass content.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Nylon 6 is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Nylon 6 is produced by ring-opening polymerisation of caprolactam: under heat, with water or a strong acid/base as initiator, the seven-membered caprolactam ring opens and the resulting chain end reacts with further caprolactam monomer, building up a linear polyamide chain. The hydrolytic polymerisation route, using water as initiator, is the dominant commercial process, run as a continuous melt polymerisation that also strips out a small, characteristic equilibrium fraction of unreacted monomer and cyclic oligomers that must be removed (typically by hot-water extraction or vacuum stripping) before the resin is suitable for melt spinning or moulding.

Because the ring-opening reaction is an equilibrium rather than a one-way reaction to completion, final molecular weight and the monomer/oligomer extraction step are both carefully controlled process variables, with relative viscosity — the main molecular-weight indicator reported on the certificate of analysis — set largely by polymerisation time, temperature and the initiator level used.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Nylon 6 is consumed across textile and carpet fibre, automotive and industrial engineering parts, and cast industrial components. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Textile & Carpet Fibre

Melt-spun into continuous filament and staple fibre for apparel, hosiery and carpet yarn, valued for resilience, abrasion resistance and dye affinity.

Field 02

Automotive & Industrial Parts

Glass-fibre-reinforced grades injection-moulded into engine covers, air intake manifolds, gears, bearings and industrial components replacing metal parts.

Field 03

Film & Packaging

Biaxially oriented into high-barrier film for food packaging, exploiting the resin's oxygen-barrier and puncture-resistance properties.

Field 04

Cast Industrial Components

Polymerised directly in a mould from monomer (cast nylon) for very large or thick parts such as large gears and wear plates that would be difficult to injection mould.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the resin is typically converted forward

The hygroscopic, semi-crystalline amide structure governs almost all of Nylon 6's further processing behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished part.

Drying

The hygroscopic resin is dried to a specified low moisture level before melt processing, since residual moisture can cause hydrolytic chain scission and surface defects during moulding or spinning.

Fibre Spinning

Melted resin is extruded through fine spinnerets and drawn to orient the polymer chains, producing continuous filament or staple fibre for textile and carpet applications.

Injection Moulding

Melted and injected into a mould cavity under pressure to form automotive and industrial parts, often with glass-fibre reinforcement for added stiffness.

Monomer Cast Polymerisation

Caprolactam monomer and catalyst are polymerised directly within a mould, producing large cast parts without the size and thickness limitations of injection moulding.

05 / RELATED BUILDING BLOCKS

Nylon 6 against its feedstock monomer and the Nylon 66 alternative we supply

Buyers sourcing Nylon 6 resin often also need the caprolactam monomer it is polymerised from, or want to compare it against the two-monomer Nylon 66 route. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Low Hazard Profile

Not classified as hazardous under GHS in solid pellet form.

Combustible Solid

Combustible; pellets and especially fine dust can support combustion once ignited.

Dust Control

Minimise accumulation of polymer dust/fines, which present a greater ignition risk than pellets.

Molten Handling

Processing equipment handles the resin molten; standard hot-surface and fume-extraction precautions apply at the extruder.

PPE Standard

Standard gloves and eye protection are sufficient for routine handling of pellets.

Moisture Sensitivity

Not a safety hazard, but a critical process-quality factor; always dry before processing per the technical data sheet.

Signal word

Not classified; refer to the batch MSDS for grade-specific guidance.

This product has a low hazard profile in its solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The principal handling precautions concern combustible-dust accumulation from fines generated during conveying and bagging, and standard hot-surface precautions during melt processing. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureAmbient, dry, indoor
ContainerMoisture-barrier bags / 1,000 kg jumbo bags
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened, moisture-barrier packaging
Keep Away FromMoisture ingress, heat sources
Beyond Shelf LifeAlways re-dry before processing

Store in a dry, ambient-temperature warehouse in the original moisture-barrier packaging, since Nylon 6 is markedly hygroscopic and will absorb atmospheric moisture steadily once the packaging is opened. Keep bags sealed until immediately before processing, and always pre-dry per the technical data sheet regardless of how recently the material was delivered. Re-check relative viscosity on material held past its retest date before use.

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is Nylon 6 used for?+
Predominantly textile and carpet fibre, automotive and industrial engineering parts (often glass-fibre-reinforced), food-packaging film, and large cast industrial components.
02What is Nylon 6 made from?+
A single monomer, caprolactam, whose seven-membered ring is opened and strung together end-to-end during polymerisation; this single-monomer chemistry is what distinguishes it from the two-monomer Nylon 66 route.
03How is Nylon 6 produced?+
By hydrolytic (water-initiated) ring-opening polymerisation of caprolactam in a continuous melt process, followed by extraction of the residual monomer and cyclic oligomers that remain at reaction equilibrium.
04What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply injection-moulding, fibre/yarn, glass-fibre-reinforced and cast grades across standard relative-viscosity ranges. Each grade ships with a certificate of analysis covering relative viscosity, moisture content and, for reinforced grades, glass content.
05Is Nylon 6 hazardous?+
No; it has a low hazard profile in solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The main handling precautions are combustible-dust control from fines generated during conveying and the process-quality requirement to dry the resin before melt processing.
