01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Polypropylene is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the resin's stereoregular structure, how that structure governs its stiffness and heat resistance, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Polypropylene is a polyolefin built from the propylene monomer, whose methyl side-group, when the catalyst arranges every repeat unit in the same stereochemical orientation (isotactic), allows the chain to fold into a tightly ordered helical crystal structure. That high degree of order gives commercial, predominantly isotactic polypropylene a notably higher melting point, stiffness and chemical resistance than polyethylene, while still being lighter (lower density) than nearly every other commodity thermoplastic.

At room temperature it is supplied as a translucent to opaque white pellet. Besides the homopolymer, two further commercial families exist: random copolymer, where a small amount of ethylene is copolymerised at random points along the chain to improve clarity and lower the melting point slightly for applications needing a better seal, and impact copolymer, where a rubbery ethylene-propylene phase is incorporated to substantially raise low-temperature impact resistance at some cost to stiffness.

Where it fits in the value chain

Polypropylene's unusual combination of a high melting point, low density, good chemical resistance and a living-hinge-capable flexural fatigue resistance has made it one of the highest-volume commodity plastics in the world. Homopolymer grades dominate rigid packaging, fibres and injection-moulded durable goods; random copolymer grades are preferred for retortable food packaging and pipe fittings needing clarity and a lower sealing temperature; impact copolymer grades are specified wherever low-temperature impact resistance is critical, such as automotive bumpers and battery cases.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Polypropylene homopolymer, random copolymer and impact copolymer grades across standard melt-flow-rate ranges for injection moulding, fibre, film and blow-moulding applications. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering melt flow rate, density and additive package.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Polypropylene is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Polypropylene is produced by stereospecific polymerisation of propylene, using a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalyst system capable of controlling the orientation of each propylene unit's methyl group as it is added to the growing chain, in gas-phase or liquid (bulk) slurry reactor processes. Highly isotactic, highly crystalline homopolymer is the commercially dominant product; the catalyst's stereospecificity is what makes the resin's characteristic high melting point and stiffness possible in the first place, since a random (atactic) arrangement of methyl groups would prevent the ordered crystal packing entirely.

Random copolymer grades are made by introducing a small, controlled amount of ethylene comonomer at random points during the same polymerisation; impact copolymer grades are made in a two-stage reactor process, first polymerising the isotactic homopolymer matrix and then, in a second reactor stage, polymerising an ethylene-propylene rubber phase in situ within the still-active homopolymer particles, giving a finely dispersed rubber-toughened morphology that cannot be achieved by simple mechanical blending after the fact.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Polypropylene is consumed across rigid packaging, fibres, automotive parts and durable injection-moulded goods. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Rigid Packaging & Caps/Closures

Injection- or blow-moulded into food containers, caps and closures, valued for its high melting point (microwave- and hot-fill-safe) and chemical resistance.

Field 02

Fibres & Nonwovens

Melt-spun into fibres for carpet, rope, woven sacks and spunbond/meltblown nonwoven fabrics used in hygiene products and filtration media.

Field 03

Automotive Parts

Impact copolymer grades injection-moulded into bumpers, interior trim, battery cases and under-the-hood components needing impact resistance and heat tolerance.

Field 04

Pipe, Film & Durable Goods

Random copolymer used in pipe fittings and retort packaging; homopolymer used in biaxially oriented film (BOPP) and household durable goods.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the resin is typically converted forward

The stereoregular, crystalline structure governs almost all of Polypropylene's further processing behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished part.

Injection Moulding

Melted and injected into a mould cavity under pressure to form caps, containers, automotive parts and durable goods, exploiting PP's living-hinge flexural fatigue resistance.

Fibre Spinning

Melt-extruded through fine spinnerets and drawn to orient the polymer chains, producing fibres for carpet, rope and woven sack applications.

Nonwoven Formation (Spunbond/Meltblown)

Molten polymer is extruded into continuous or ultrafine fibres and laid directly into a web to form nonwoven fabric without a separate weaving step.

Biaxial Orientation (BOPP Film)

Cast film is stretched in both the machine and transverse directions, aligning the crystalline structure to give high-clarity, high-strength oriented film.

05 / RELATED BUILDING BLOCKS

Polypropylene against related monomer and polyolefin products we supply

Buyers sourcing polypropylene resin often also need the propylene monomer itself, or a related polyolefin grade. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Low Hazard Profile

Not classified as hazardous under GHS in solid pellet form.

Combustible Solid

Combustible; pellets and especially fine dust can support combustion once ignited.

Dust Control

Minimise accumulation of polymer dust/fines, which present a greater ignition risk than pellets.

Molten Handling

Processing equipment handles the resin molten; standard hot-surface and fume-extraction precautions apply at the extruder.

PPE Standard

Standard gloves and eye protection are sufficient for routine handling of pellets.

Thermal Decomposition

May emit irritant fumes if processed well above normal processing temperature or involved in a fire.

Signal word

Not classified; refer to the batch MSDS for grade-specific guidance.

This product has a low hazard profile in its solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The principal handling precautions concern combustible-dust accumulation from fines generated during conveying and bagging, and standard hot-surface precautions during melt processing. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureAmbient, dry, indoor
Container25 kg bags / 1,000 kg jumbo bags
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
Keep Away FromUV exposure, moisture, heat sources
Beyond Shelf LifeRe-check melt flow rate before processing

Store in a dry, ambient-temperature warehouse, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, since prolonged UV and heat exposure can degrade the resin's additive package and processing behaviour. Keep bags sealed to prevent moisture pickup and contamination with other resin grades. Re-check melt flow rate and moisture content on material held past its retest date before processing.

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is Polypropylene used for?+
Across rigid packaging and caps/closures, fibres and nonwovens, automotive parts (impact copolymer grades), and pipe fittings, film and durable injection-moulded goods.
02What is the difference between PP homopolymer, random copolymer and impact copolymer?+
Homopolymer gives the highest stiffness and melting point for general rigid packaging and fibre; random copolymer incorporates a small amount of ethylene at random points to improve clarity and lower the seal temperature for retort packaging; impact copolymer is made in a two-stage reactor process to incorporate a rubbery ethylene-propylene phase for substantially higher low-temperature impact resistance, used especially in automotive parts.
03How is Polypropylene produced?+
By stereospecific polymerisation of propylene over a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalyst capable of controlling methyl-group orientation, giving the predominantly isotactic structure that allows the characteristic helical crystal packing; impact copolymer grades add a second in-reactor stage to build in a rubber phase.
04What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply homopolymer, random copolymer and impact copolymer Polypropylene across standard melt-flow-rate ranges for injection moulding, fibre, film and blow-moulding applications. Each grade ships with a certificate of analysis.
05Is Polypropylene hazardous?+
No; it has a low hazard profile in solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The main handling precaution is combustible-dust control from fines generated during conveying.
06Why does Polypropylene have such a high melting point for a commodity plastic?+
Because the catalyst arranges every propylene repeat unit's methyl group in the same stereochemical orientation (isotactic), the chains can fold into a tightly ordered helical crystal structure, and it is that high degree of crystalline order — not the chemistry of the monomer alone — that gives the resin its comparatively high melting point and stiffness relative to polyethylene.
07What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 25 kg bags on pallet, with 1,000 kg jumbo bags or bulk hopper truck shipment available for larger volumes.
08How long does delivery take?+
Typical lead time is two to three weeks plus transit, depending on whether the grade is ex-stock or made to order and your destination port. A firm date is confirmed in the written quotation.
09Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
10Do you supply the propylene monomer as well?+
Yes, we supply Propylene, the monomer this resin is polymerised from, as a dedicated standalone product.
