Methylamine

CH3NH2 Molar mass 31.06 g/mol

Methylamine is the first gas-phase product in our catalogue, and we want that stated plainly up front: it is traded in two genuinely different commercial forms, each with its own UN number and packaging, and this page states both rather than defaulting silently to the drummed-liquid pattern used for every other product in our range.

01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Methylamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Methylamine is the simplest alkylamine, a gas at ordinary room temperature and pressure (boiling point −6.3 °C), which makes its commercial handling fundamentally different from every other liquid or solid product in our catalogue. It is traded in two distinct forms: as an anhydrous liquefied gas, compressed and stored under its own vapour pressure in pressurised cylinders or ISO tanks (UN 1061, Flammable Gas), and separately as a 40% w/w aqueous solution, a free-flowing liquid at ambient conditions, packed in conventional drums or IBCs (UN 1235, Flammable Liquid, Corrosive). These are two different UN numbers with two different packaging and handling profiles, not two names for the same shipped product, and a buyer should specify which form they need rather than assume one implies the other.

Methylamine is a well-documented building block across pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and general fine-chemical synthesis, used wherever an N-methyl group needs to be introduced onto a larger molecule -- including as a starting material in several agrochemical active-ingredient syntheses and pharmaceutical intermediate chains. We note, factually and without further elaboration, that because of its chemical utility this substance is subject to recognised precursor-chemical controls and monitoring in a number of jurisdictions; we do not provide synthesis routes, dosing, or any other operational detail beyond this regulatory-status note, and we supply it strictly for documented, legitimate industrial and pharmaceutical-intermediate end uses, with standard end-use and customer verification applied to orders.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply Methylamine itself, in either of its two commercial forms. We do not manufacture or supply any finished pharmaceutical, agrochemical, or other downstream product made using it.

Grades we supply

The anhydrous gas is typically offered at 98%+ purity; the aqueous solution is typically offered at 40% w/w, with other concentrations available on request.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Methylamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Methylamine is made industrially by reaction of methanol with ammonia over a solid acid catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, a process that co-produces dimethylamine and trimethylamine as the methanol-to-ammonia ratio and reaction conditions shift the product distribution toward more highly substituted amines.

Reaction conditions — typically an excess of ammonia relative to methanol — are tuned to favour methylamine as the major product, since the three amines (mono-, di-, and tri-methylamine) are the structurally related co-products of the same catalytic amination chemistry.

The crude product mixture is separated by fractional distillation, exploiting the different boiling points of methylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine, and the methylamine fraction is then either liquefied and packed as the anhydrous gas or dissolved to the target concentration as the aqueous solution, depending on which commercial form is being produced.

Two forms, two UN numbers — stated explicitly rather than defaulted

Every other product in our catalogue is a liquid or a solid, shipped in drums, and this page is the first time that pattern doesn't apply by default. We want to be explicit rather than quietly pick one form and describe it as if it were the only option: the anhydrous liquefied gas (UN 1061) and the 40% w/w aqueous solution (UN 1235) are both genuine, separately available commercial forms of this substance, with meaningfully different packaging, handling, and dangerous-goods documentation. A buyer should tell us which form their process requires — we do not treat one as the default and the other as an afterthought.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Methylamine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Pharmaceutical Intermediate

A documented building block in pharmaceutical synthesis, used wherever an N-methyl group needs to be introduced onto a larger molecule.

Field 02

Agrochemical Intermediate

A documented starting material in the synthesis of several agrochemical active ingredients.

Field 03

General Fine-Chemical Methylating Building Block

Used more broadly across fine-chemical synthesis as the simplest available source of an N-methylamine group.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Methylamine's chemistry centres on its nucleophilic, primary amino group, reactive toward a wide range of electrophiles, which is exactly why it is such a widely used building block across pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis.

N-Alkylation

The amino group reacts with alkyl halides or other alkylating agents to introduce an N-methylamino group onto a larger molecule, a standard synthetic step across pharmaceutical and agrochemical chemistry.

Amide/urea formation

Reaction with an acid chloride, anhydride, or isocyanate gives the corresponding N-methylamide or N-methylurea, a common transformation in agrochemical active-ingredient synthesis.

Reductive amination

Reaction with an aldehyde or ketone under reducing conditions gives a secondary N-methylamine, a standard route to more complex amine intermediates.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Methylamine against its near relatives

Methylamine is the sole gas-phase product in our current catalogue; see the rest of our aniline- and amine-derivative range for related liquid and solid intermediates.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

H220

Extremely flammable gas. (Anhydrous gas form; see note for the aqueous solution's GHS set.)

H280

Contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated. (Anhydrous gas form.)

H315

Causes skin irritation.

H318

Causes serious eye damage.

H335

May cause respiratory irritation.

Signal word

Danger

Methylamine's hazard classification differs meaningfully by trading form, and we state both rather than merge them. The anhydrous liquefied gas (UN 1061, Flammable Gas) carries H220 (extremely flammable gas) and H280 (contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated), alongside corrosive/irritant statements (H315, H318, H335) common to both forms. The 40% w/w aqueous solution (UN 1235, Flammable Liquid, Corrosive) instead carries H225 (highly flammable liquid and vapour) and H314 (causes severe skin burns and eye damage) in place of the gas-specific statements, reflecting its character as a corrosive liquid rather than a pressurised gas. The governing SDS and transport documentation for your specific order will reflect the form actually shipped; check that documentation rather than relying on a single merged hazard summary.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Shelf Life12 months (gas, in cylinder/ISO tank); 12 months (40% solution, unopened)
Storage TempAmbient, away from heat sources (gas); 15–25 °C (solution)
ContainerPressurised cylinders or ISO tanks (gas, UN 1061) or drums/IBCs (40% solution, UN 1235) — specify form when ordering

Storage and handling differ fundamentally by form. The anhydrous gas requires pressure-rated cylinders or ISO tanks, stored upright, secured against falling, away from ignition sources and oxidisers, in well-ventilated, temperature-controlled areas consistent with a compressed, extremely flammable gas. The 40% aqueous solution is stored as a corrosive, flammable liquid in appropriately rated drums or IBCs, in a cool, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources, with spill containment appropriate to a corrosive liquid.

Both are genuinely available commercial forms, each with its own UN number: the anhydrous liquefied gas (UN 1061, in pressurised cylinders or ISO tanks) and the 40% w/w aqueous solution (UN 1235, in drums or IBCs). We don't default to one as standard -- tell us which your process requires and we'll quote and ship that specific form with its correct transport documentation.
06Why does this page look different from your other product pages?+
Because this is the first gas-phase product in our catalogue. Every other product on our site is a liquid or solid shipped in drums under one consistent packaging pattern; methylamine genuinely has two distinct commercial forms with two distinct UN numbers, and we state that explicitly rather than force it into the single-form template used elsewhere.
07Is there anything restricted about ordering this chemical?+
Because of its wide chemical utility, methylamine is subject to recognised precursor-chemical monitoring in a number of jurisdictions. We supply it only for documented, legitimate industrial and pharmaceutical-intermediate end uses, and standard end-use and customer verification is applied to orders.
