Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
The Niacinamide (Nicotinamide, Vitamin B3) supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a pharmacopoeial-grade vitamin used across pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic formulation — exported from Indonesia as fine white crystalline powder with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Niacinamide is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the vitamin's chemistry, how it differs from its related acid form, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is the amide form of vitamin B3, chemically related to but functionally distinct from nicotinic acid (niacin), the carboxylic-acid form of the same vitamin. Both forms are converted in the body to the same essential coenzymes, NAD and NADP, central to energy metabolism in every cell, but niacinamide does not produce the characteristic skin-flushing reaction that nicotinic acid can cause at higher doses, which is a large part of why niacinamide is the preferred form for most nutritional supplementation, food fortification and topical cosmetic use.
At room temperature it is a white, essentially odourless crystalline powder, freely soluble in water — markedly more so than nicotinic acid — and also soluble in alcohol and glycerin, properties that make it straightforward to formulate into a wide range of liquid, solid and topical dosage and cosmetic forms.
Where it fits in the value chain
Niacinamide's largest volume use is as a vitamin fortification and supplementation ingredient, added to multivitamin formulations, food and beverage fortification programmes, and animal feed premixes to meet established nutritional requirements. A separate, rapidly grown use is in topical cosmetic and dermatological formulation, where niacinamide is valued for its skin-barrier-supporting and brightening properties and has become one of the most widely used active ingredients in modern skincare. It is also used in certain pharmaceutical formulations and, in smaller volume, as an analytical and laboratory reagent.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Niacinamide meeting USP/EP pharmacopoeial and FCC (food-chemical codex) specifications, suited to pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food-fortification and cosmetic formulation. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering assay, heavy metals and microbial limits.
How Niacinamide is produced
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Niacinamide is produced predominantly from 3-cyanopyridine, itself made by the ammoxidation of 3-methylpyridine (beta-picoline): the nitrile group of 3-cyanopyridine is then hydrolysed under controlled conditions, stopping deliberately at the amide stage rather than continuing on to the carboxylic acid (nicotinic acid), using either an enzymatic (nitrile hydratase) process or a controlled chemical hydrolysis. The enzymatic route, now widely adopted commercially, offers excellent selectivity for stopping cleanly at the amide without over-hydrolysis to the acid, together with a milder reaction profile than the older chemical hydrolysis methods.
An older, now largely superseded route oxidised 3-methylpyridine directly to nicotinic acid first, which was then converted to niacinamide via its ester or acid chloride and reacted with ammonia; the direct nitrile-hydrolysis route from 3-cyanopyridine is more efficient and is the dominant modern commercial process. The crude product is purified by recrystallisation to reach pharmacopoeial purity.
Industries and processes that use it
Niacinamide is consumed across vitamin fortification and supplementation, cosmetic/dermatological formulation and animal feed premixes. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Vitamin Supplementation & Fortification
Formulated into multivitamin supplements and used in food and beverage fortification programmes to meet established vitamin B3 nutritional requirements.
Cosmetic & Dermatological Formulation
Formulated into serums, creams and other topical skincare products, valued for skin-barrier-supporting and brightening properties; one of the most widely used actives in modern skincare.
Animal Feed Premixes
Included in animal feed vitamin premixes to meet the nutritional requirements of livestock and companion-animal diets.
Pharmaceutical Formulation & Laboratory Reagent
Used in certain pharmaceutical formulations and, in smaller volume, as an analytical and laboratory reagent.
How the material is typically formulated forward
The vitamin's high water solubility and stability govern almost all of Niacinamide's further formulation behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished product.
Multivitamin Tablet/Capsule Formulation
Blended with other vitamins, minerals and excipients and compressed into tablets or filled into capsules as part of a multivitamin or targeted supplement formulation.
Topical Formulation Blending
Dissolved into the aqueous phase of a cosmetic serum, cream or lotion formulation, typically at a specified percentage concentration established for skincare efficacy.
Food/Beverage Fortification
Added directly to food or beverage formulations during processing to meet mandated or voluntary vitamin B3 fortification levels.
Feed Premix Blending
Blended into a concentrated vitamin premix that is then incorporated at a low inclusion rate into complete animal feed formulations.
Niacinamide against a related pharmaceutical/nutritional ingredient we supply
Buyers sourcing Niacinamide for supplement or capsule formulation often also need the capsule-shell excipient it will be filled into. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.
| Product | CAS Number | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) | 98-92-0 | Vitamin / nutritional ingredient | The product on this page — the amide form of vitamin B3, used in supplements, fortification and skincare. |
| Gelatin (Pharma Grade) | 9000-70-8 | Hydrolysed collagen protein | A related pharmaceutical excipient, often the capsule shell this vitamin is formulated into — see its product page. |
| Hydroxylamine Sulfate | 10039-54-0 | Inorganic amine reagent | A related fine-chemical and nylon-intermediate reagent from our pharma-adjacent range — see its product page. |
| Salicylic Acid | 69-72-7 | Phenolic acid | A related pharmaceutical-grade active/intermediate from our broader catalogue — see its product page. |
Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than Niacinamide.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Not classified as hazardous under GHS; a recognised, widely used vitamin ingredient.
Combustible in dry powder form like most organic solids; store away from open flame.
Minimise airborne dust during milling and packing, as a standard good-practice measure for any fine powder.
Standard gloves and good hygiene practice are sufficient for routine handling.
As with any vitamin ingredient, formulation dosage should follow the relevant nutritional/pharmacopoeial guidance for the finished product's market.
Not classified; refer to the batch certificate of analysis and MSDS for full detail.
This product has a low hazard profile and is not classified as hazardous under GHS; it is a recognised, widely used vitamin ingredient handled under standard good-manufacturing-practice precautions rather than chemical-hazard protocols. Routine handling calls for standard gloves and good hygiene practice, with dust control during milling and packing as for any fine powder. Full handling and storage guidance is in the technical data sheet and MSDS issued with every shipment.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a dry, ambient-temperature area in tightly closed containers, away from strong oxidising agents and direct sunlight. Niacinamide is a comparatively stable vitamin with a long shelf life relative to many other compounds in our catalogue. Re-check assay and moisture content on a batch held past its retest date before use.
