01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Thionyl Chloride is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the reagent's chemistry, why it is the preferred way to make acid chlorides, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Thionyl Chloride is a small, highly reactive inorganic chlorinating reagent whose defining use is converting carboxylic acids into the corresponding acid chlorides, a transformation central to a huge share of pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine-chemical synthesis. Its particular advantage over competing chlorinating agents (such as phosphorus trichloride or phosphorus oxychloride) is that both of its by-products — sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride — leave the reaction as gases, which means the desired acid chloride product is obtained cleanly without a solid phosphorus-containing by-product to separate out, a practical advantage that has made it the default reagent of choice across the industry wherever it is applicable.

At room temperature it is a colourless to pale yellow liquid that fumes visibly in moist air, reacting with atmospheric moisture to release the same hydrogen chloride and sulphur dioxide gases its main reaction produces; this reactivity with water is both its defining hazard and the reason it must be stored and handled under strictly moisture-excluded conditions. It has a sharp, pungent odour detectable at very low concentration, which serves in practice as an early warning of any container integrity issue.

Where it fits in the value chain

Thionyl Chloride's single largest use is converting carboxylic acid intermediates — in pharmaceutical, agrochemical and dye manufacture — into the corresponding acid chlorides, which are far more reactive and therefore more useful for the subsequent amide- or ester-forming step the synthesis actually needs. It performs the same chlorination on alcohols, converting them to alkyl chlorides, and is also used industrially to dehydrate certain other functional groups and to prepare anhydrous metal chlorides from their hydrates, exploiting its strong affinity for water and hydroxyl groups generally.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Thionyl Chloride in technical grade for general industrial chlorination chemistry and pharmaceutical-intermediate grade, with tighter iron and trace-metal limits, for API and fine-chemical synthesis where metal contamination could interfere with the downstream reaction or the final product's specification. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Thionyl Chloride is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Thionyl Chloride is produced industrially by reacting sulphur dioxide with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst, commonly activated carbon, which promotes the combination of the two gases into the single SOCl2 molecule. An alternative, longer-established route reacts sulphur trioxide with sulphur dichloride, or chlorosulphonic acid with a suitable chlorinating agent, though the direct sulphur dioxide/chlorine catalytic route is the more common modern commercial process given its simpler feedstock requirements.

The crude product is purified by fractional distillation, a step made necessary by the presence of several possible chlorine-sulphur-oxygen by-products from incomplete or over-chlorination; because the reagent reacts immediately and visibly with any trace moisture, every stage of the process downstream of reaction, including packaging, is run under strictly controlled dry conditions to prevent both yield loss and gradual product degradation.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Thionyl Chloride is consumed across pharmaceutical, agrochemical and dye-intermediate acid-chloride synthesis, plus specialty dehydration chemistry. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Pharmaceutical Acid Chloride Synthesis

Converts carboxylic acid pharmaceutical intermediates (including, for example, salicylic acid derivatives) into the corresponding acid chlorides for subsequent amide or ester coupling steps.

Field 02

Agrochemical Intermediate Synthesis

Used in the manufacture of herbicide, fungicide and insecticide active ingredients wherever an acid chloride or alkyl chloride intermediate step is required.

Field 03

Dye & Specialty Chemical Synthesis

Converts carboxylic acid dye intermediates into acid chlorides for the subsequent coupling or condensation step in dye manufacture.

Field 04

Dehydrating Agent & Anhydrous Salt Preparation

Used to dehydrate certain hydrated compounds and to prepare anhydrous metal chlorides from their hydrated forms, exploiting its strong reactivity with water.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the reagent is typically used forward

The reagent's reaction with both carboxylic acids and water governs almost all of Thionyl Chloride's further use. The categories below account for most of the ways it is applied in downstream synthesis.

Acid Chloride Formation

Reacted with a carboxylic acid, typically under reflux with a catalytic amount of DMF or pyridine to accelerate the reaction, converting the acid directly to the corresponding acid chloride while releasing SO2 and HCl gas.

Alcohol-to-Chloride Conversion

Reacted with a primary or secondary alcohol to convert the hydroxyl group to a chloride, a useful alternative to other chlorinating methods, particularly where clean gaseous by-products are an advantage.

Sulphinate Ester Formation

Reacted with certain alcohols under controlled conditions to form sulphinate esters, an intermediate step in some specialty syntheses.

Dehydration Reactions

Used to dehydrate amides to nitriles and to perform other dehydration steps where its strong affinity for the oxygen/hydrogen of water or a hydroxyl group drives the reaction.

Signal word

Danger

This product causes severe skin burns and eye damage on contact, is toxic if inhaled, and reacts violently with water to release corrosive hydrogen chloride and toxic sulphur dioxide gas — a reaction that can occur simply from exposure to atmospheric humidity if a container is not kept properly sealed. Handling requires chemical-resistant gloves, full-face respiratory protection, acid-resistant clothing and, given the corrosive and toxic gas evolved on any water contact, work in a fume hood or otherwise well-ventilated, moisture-controlled area. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and must be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, ambient, strictly dry
ContainerSealed drums, moisture-excluded
Typical Shelf Life12 – 18 months, unopened, sealed
Keep Away FromWater/moisture, strong bases, oxidizers
Beyond Shelf LifeRe-check assay before use

Store in tightly sealed, moisture-excluding containers in a cool, dry area, strictly away from water, strong bases and oxidising agents, since contact with moisture is both the key degradation pathway and the key hazard this material presents. Any container showing signs of pressure build-up, fuming at the seal, or corrosion should be treated with particular caution and isolated rather than opened under uncontrolled conditions. Re-check assay on a batch held past its retest date before use.

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is Thionyl Chloride used for?+
Predominantly converting carboxylic acids into their corresponding acid chlorides for pharmaceutical, agrochemical and dye intermediate synthesis; also used to convert alcohols to alkyl chlorides and for certain dehydration reactions.
02Why is Thionyl Chloride preferred over other chlorinating agents?+
Because both of its reaction by-products, sulphur dioxide and hydrogen chloride, leave the reaction mixture as gases rather than as a solid residue, the desired product is obtained more cleanly, without the extra aqueous work-up and by-product removal steps that competing reagents such as phosphorus trichloride require.
03How is Thionyl Chloride produced?+
Predominantly by the catalytic combination of sulphur dioxide and chlorine gas, commonly over an activated-carbon catalyst, followed by fractional distillation purification.
04What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply technical grade for general industrial chlorination chemistry and pharmaceutical-intermediate grade, with tighter iron and trace-metal limits, for API and fine-chemical synthesis. Each grade ships with a certificate of analysis.
05Is Thionyl Chloride hazardous?+
Yes, significantly; it causes severe skin burns and eye damage, is toxic if inhaled, and reacts violently with water to release corrosive and toxic gases. It must be handled only with the full PPE, ventilation and moisture-exclusion precautions specified in the MSDS supplied with each shipment.
06Why does Thionyl Chloride need to be kept so strictly dry?+
Because the reagent reacts with water in essentially the same way it reacts with the carboxylic acids and alcohols it is meant to chlorinate, any moisture that reaches the material is consumed non-productively while releasing corrosive hydrogen chloride and toxic sulphur dioxide gas — which both wastes reagent and creates a hazardous atmosphere, making rigorous moisture exclusion essential at every stage from manufacture through storage to final use.
07What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 200 kg moisture-excluded, lined drums, with ISO tank shipment available on request for larger volumes.
08How long does delivery take?+
Typical lead time is two to three weeks plus transit, depending on whether the grade is ex-stock or made to order and your destination port. A firm date is confirmed in the written quotation.
09Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
10Do you supply related chlorinating and acylating reagents as well?+
Yes, we also supply Chloroacetyl Chloride and Ethyl Chloroformate, two related reagents used across similar pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis routes.
