n-Propylamine
The straight-chain primary propylamine supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a building block for pharmaceutical, rubber and agrochemical intermediate chemistry wherever a small, linear primary amine is required — exported from Indonesia with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What n-Propylamine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place as the straight-chain isomer of the propylamines, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
n-Propylamine is a primary aliphatic amine with an unbranched three-carbon chain: a small, reasonably basic, strongly nucleophilic amine typical of the lower straight-chain alkylamines. It readily forms amides, imines, sulfonamides and ureas, and is a competent nucleophile in substitution chemistry on activated aromatic and aliphatic electrophiles.
At room temperature it is a colourless, highly volatile, flammable liquid with a sharp ammonia-like odour, miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is handled with the same solvent-class precautions typical of low-boiling aliphatic amines.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
n-Propylamine is used as a building block across pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis, rubber-chemical intermediate chemistry, and agrochemical intermediate manufacture wherever a small, linear, unbranched primary amine is specifically required rather than its branched isomer, isopropylamine. It is also used in general organic synthesis for amide, sulfonamide and urea formation, and in some surfactant and corrosion-inhibitor formulation chemistry.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers n-Propylamine in technical grade (≈99% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99.5%+) for pharmaceutical-intermediate applications sensitive to colour and water content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How n-Propylamine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
n-Propylamine is manufactured industrially by catalytic amination of n-propanol with ammonia over a metal catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, in a reaction directly analogous to the routes used for ethylamine and butylamine: CH₃(CH₂)₂OH + NH₃ → CH₃(CH₂)₂NH₂ + H₂O. An alternative laboratory-scale route proceeds by reacting 1-propanol with ammonium chloride at high temperature and pressure using a Lewis acid catalyst such as ferric chloride. Reductive amination of propionaldehyde with ammonia and hydrogen over a metal catalyst is also used in some production schemes.
Why the catalytic amination route is favoured at scale
Direct catalytic amination of the alcohol is continuous and scalable, giving good conversion with straightforward downstream distillation to separate the target amine from residual alcohol, ammonia and secondary/tertiary amine by-products.
Industries and processes that use it
n-Propylamine is consumed by pharmaceutical, rubber and agrochemical intermediate manufacture wherever a small, linear primary amine is specifically required. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Pharmaceutical Intermediate Chemistry
A building block in pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis wherever a small, unbranched primary amine is required.
Rubber-Chemical Intermediate Chemistry
Incorporated into rubber-chemical intermediate synthesis as a linear aliphatic amine building block.
Agrochemical Intermediate Chemistry
Used as a building block in some agrochemical intermediate synthesis routes that specifically require the linear propylamine isomer.
General Amide & Urea Synthesis
Used broadly in organic synthesis for amide, sulfonamide and urea formation across fine-chemical manufacture.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The primary amine's nucleophilicity and linear chain shape govern almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways n-Propylamine is converted into a finished intermediate.
Amide / Urea Formation
Reacts with acid chlorides, isocyanates and anhydrides to give the corresponding amide or urea, a routine step in pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate synthesis.
Sulfonamide Formation
Reacts with sulfonyl chlorides to give the corresponding sulfonamide, used in some pharmaceutical intermediate sequences.
Nucleophilic Substitution
Displaces suitable leaving groups on activated aliphatic or aromatic electrophiles, introducing the n-propylamino group directly.
Reductive Amination Chemistry
Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to give imines that are reduced to secondary amines, used in some fine-chemical sequences.
n-Propylamine against its branched isomer and other amines we supply
Buyers sourcing n-propylamine often need to confirm they want the linear isomer rather than isopropylamine for their process. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.
| Product | CAS Number | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| n-Propylamine | 107-10-8 | Primary linear amine | The product on this page — the unbranched propylamine isomer in our range. |
| Isopropylamine | 75-31-0 | Primary branched amine | The branched isomer, widely used in glyphosate and atrazine herbicide chemistry — see its product page. |
| Ethylamine | 75-04-7 | Primary ethylamine | A related shorter-chain primary amine elsewhere in our range — see its product page. |
| n-Butylamine | 109-73-9 | Primary linear amine | The next homologue up the linear-chain series — see its product page. |
Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than n-Propylamine.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
Harmful if swallowed.
Toxic in contact with skin.
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
Toxic if inhaled.
Impervious gloves, chemical splash goggles or a face shield, and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.
Highly flammable; keep away from open flames, sparks, static discharge and other ignition sources, and bond/ground containers during transfer.
Danger — GHS02 flammable, GHS05 corrosive and GHS06 toxic pictograms apply.
This compound is a highly flammable, corrosive liquid that is toxic in contact with skin or if inhaled, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, and is harmful if swallowed. It must be handled with impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection in a well-ventilated area, kept away from all ignition sources. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, open flames and other ignition sources, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing agents and strong acids. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay, colour and water content before use.
How it ships from Indonesia
Standard packing and export terms for this product. Confirm exact figures against your order — they vary slightly by destination and quantity.
