01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Isopropylamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its central role in herbicide salt and amide chemistry, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Isopropylamine is the branched isomer of the propylamines: a primary amine attached to the central carbon of a three-carbon chain. The branching makes the nitrogen somewhat more sterically shielded than in the linear isomer, n-propylamine, which in practice gives it a slightly different reactivity and selectivity profile in condensation and salt-forming chemistry — one of the reasons process chemists specify it rather than its isomer for particular steps.

At room temperature it is a colourless, highly volatile, flammable liquid with a sharp ammonia-like odour, miscible with water and most organic solvents. It is handled with the same solvent-class precautions typical of low-boiling aliphatic amines.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Isopropylamine's best-known application by volume is as the counter-ion in the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate (IPA salt), one of the most widely formulated commercial forms of the world's most heavily used herbicide. It is also a building block for the chlorotriazine herbicide atrazine, where it introduces the isopropylamino substituent in the same way ethylamine introduces the ethylamino substituent. Beyond herbicide chemistry, it is used as a plastics-processing regulating agent, an intermediate in coatings, rubber-chemical and pharmaceutical synthesis, and as an additive in some petroleum-industry formulations.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Isopropylamine in technical grade (≈99% assay) for standard herbicide-formulation and industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99.5%+) for pharmaceutical-intermediate applications sensitive to colour and water content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Isopropylamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Isopropylamine is manufactured industrially by catalytic reaction of isopropyl alcohol with ammonia in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, with water as the only by-product: (CH₃)₂CHOH + NH₃ → (CH₃)₂CHNH₂ + H₂O. An alternative route proceeds by reductive amination of acetone with ammonia and hydrogen over a metal catalyst, which is mechanistically related and gives the same product. The crude amine is purified by distillation to the required assay before packing.

Why the isopropanol amination route is favoured at scale

Direct catalytic amination of isopropyl alcohol is continuous, high-yielding and uses a cheap, widely available feedstock, which is why it dominates commercial isopropylamine manufacture for herbicide-grade material.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Isopropylamine is consumed overwhelmingly by herbicide salt and intermediate manufacture, with secondary demand from coatings, rubber, pharmaceutical and petroleum-additive chemistry. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Glyphosate Isopropylamine Salt

Neutralisation with glyphosate acid gives the isopropylamine (IPA) salt, one of the most widely formulated commercial forms of this herbicide.

Field 02

Atrazine & Triazine Herbicide Intermediate

Introduces the isopropylamino substituent in atrazine, one of the most widely used chlorotriazine herbicides.

Field 03

Plastics Processing Regulating Agent

Used as a regulating agent in some plastics-processing formulations, and as an intermediate in coatings synthesis.

Field 04

Pharmaceutical & Rubber-Chemical Intermediate

A building block in pharmaceutical and rubber-chemical intermediate synthesis, and an additive in some petroleum-industry formulations.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The primary amine's basicity and branched-chain shape govern almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways Isopropylamine is converted into a finished intermediate or formulated salt.

Acid-Base Salt Formation

Neutralisation with glyphosate acid gives the isopropylamine salt directly, the basis of one of the most widely formulated commercial herbicide products.

Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

Displaces chloride from chlorotriazine intermediates to install the isopropylamino substituent, a key step in atrazine manufacture.

Amide / Urea Formation

Reacts with acid chlorides, isocyanates and anhydrides to give the corresponding amide or urea, used in some pharmaceutical and coatings intermediate sequences.

Reductive Amination Chemistry

Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to give imines that are reduced to secondary amines, used in some fine-chemical sequences.

05 / RELATED BUILDING BLOCKS

Isopropylamine against its linear isomer and other amines we supply

Buyers sourcing isopropylamine for herbicide formulation often need to confirm it against the linear isomer for other steps. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.
