What 2,4,5-Trichloroaniline is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the chlorinated aniline family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
2,4,5-Trichloroaniline is a trichlorinated derivative of aniline, carrying chlorine atoms at the 2-, 4- and 5-ring positions relative to the amino group. With three chlorines contributing inductive electron withdrawal but none directly conjugated through the ring in a way that fully shuts down the amine's reactivity, the nitrogen retains enough nucleophilicity for the standard primary-arylamine reactions — diazotization, acylation and further substitution — while the heavily chlorinated ring itself gives the finished molecules built from it good chemical and biological stability, a property widely exploited in agrochemical and antimicrobial chemistry.
At room temperature it is a grey-brown crystalline solid, only sparingly soluble in water but soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol and benzene.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
Like other chlorinated anilines, 2,4,5-trichloroaniline is used almost exclusively as a synthesis intermediate. Its amino group is diazotized and coupled to build azo dye chromophores, or acylated and otherwise elaborated to build herbicide, insecticide and antiviral agent structures. The particular 2,4,5-trichloro substitution pattern recurs across several classes of crop-protection and pharmaceutical chemistry, which is why this specific isomer — rather than a different trichloroaniline — is the one most consistently in demand.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 2,4,5-Trichloroaniline in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99%+) for applications sensitive to isomer carryover or trace metal content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis so your incoming QC team can verify the parameters you ordered against.
How 2,4,5-Trichloroaniline is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Commercial-scale 2,4,5-trichloroaniline is produced by the catalytic reduction of 2,4,5-trichloronitrobenzene, following the same general pattern used for other chlorinated anilines in our range. The starting nitro compound is obtained by chlorination and nitration of benzene in a controlled sequence that fixes the three chlorines in the 2,4,5-relationship to the eventual amino group.
Reduction of 2,4,5-trichloronitrobenzene to the amine is most commonly carried out by catalytic hydrogenation (Pd/C or Raney nickel under hydrogen), with an older iron/acid (Béchamp-type) reduction also used on a smaller scale. As with other polychlorinated nitrobenzenes, hydrogenation conditions are controlled to minimize hydrodechlorination — the loss of a ring chlorine under overly aggressive reduction conditions — which would otherwise generate dichloroaniline impurities.
After reduction, the crude amine is washed and vacuum-distilled or recrystallized to remove unreacted starting material, partially dechlorinated by-products and residual catalyst metals before drying and packing. This purification step is where technical grade and high-purity grade material part ways.
Why the chlorination/nitration sequence matters
As with the other chlorinated anilines we supply, the positions of the three chlorines are fixed at the chlorination and nitration stage of the starting benzene, well before the amine is ever formed. This is why 2,4,5-trichloroaniline and other trichloroaniline isomers are sourced from distinct manufacturing streams, and why isomer purity is reported on the certificate of analysis as a core specification.
Industries and processes that use it
2,4,5-Trichloroaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The fields below account for most of the global demand we see through our export desk.
Azo Dyes
Diazotized and coupled to build azo dye chromophores, where the trichlorinated ring contributes to the finished colourant's shade and lightfastness.
Herbicides & Insecticides
A building block in the synthesis of chlorinated herbicide and insecticide active ingredients, where the stability of the trichlorinated ring is part of the target structure.
Antiviral & Pharmaceutical Intermediates
Used in the synthesis of antiviral agents and other pharmaceutical intermediates that call for a trichlorinated aniline core.
Specialty & Chlorinated Aromatics
A starting material for further chlorinated aromatic compounds used across process and research chemistry.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The primary amine remains the reactive handle, with the three ring chlorines moderating its reactivity by induction. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways 2,4,5-Trichloroaniline is converted into a finished intermediate downstream.
Diazotization
Reaction of the amino group with nitrous acid (generated in situ, held below 5 °C) converts the amine into a diazonium salt — the entry point for azo-coupling and Sandmeyer-type substitution chemistry.
Azo Coupling
The diazonium intermediate is coupled with an electron-rich aromatic partner to build the azo (–N=N–) linkage that forms the chromophore core of dye structures.
Acylation
Reaction with an acid chloride or anhydride converts the amine to an amide, a step used in building herbicide, insecticide and pharmaceutical active-ingredient scaffolds from this intermediate.
Further Ring Substitution
Under suitable conditions, one of the ring chlorines can itself be displaced by a nucleophile, a route used to access further substituted aniline intermediates from the same starting material.

Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled.
May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
Very toxic to aquatic life, with long-lasting effects.
Keep away from strong oxidizers and reducing agents.
Avoid generating or inhaling dust during transfer and weighing.
Significant darkening on receipt can indicate degradation; verify against the batch CoA.
H301+H311+H331: a single combined acute-toxicity classification covering all three exposure routes.
Danger — GHS06 toxic, GHS08 health hazard and GHS09 environmental pictograms commonly apply.
Handle with chemical-resistant gloves, eye/face protection and adequate ventilation or respiratory protection; avoid release to drains and waterways given its aquatic toxicity profile. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing and acidic materials. Once a container is opened, reseal it promptly to limit moisture pickup, which can affect both the measured assay and handling characteristics. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay and moisture before use.
