01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Urea is, and why buyers source it

Urea combines the highest nitrogen content of any solid fertiliser with straightforward handling and storage, making it the dominant nitrogen source in global agriculture, while technical-grade material serves as the essential feedstock for urea-formaldehyde and melamine resin manufacturing.

Prilled and granular Urea at 46% nitrogen content is the standard solid nitrogen fertiliser worldwide, valued for its high nutrient density per unit weight shipped, which reduces transport and application costs relative to lower-concentration nitrogen sources.

Lower-biuret technical-grade Urea is reacted with Formaldehyde to produce urea-formaldehyde resins used in wood adhesives (particleboard, MDF, plywood) and moulding compounds, where biuret content and purity directly affect resin performance.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Urea is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Urea is manufactured by reacting Ammonia with carbon dioxide (CO2) under high pressure and temperature to form ammonium carbamate, which is then dehydrated to Urea.

Reactor pressure, temperature and residence time are controlled to maximise conversion and minimise biuret formation (an over-dehydration by-product), followed by prilling or granulation to the target particle size and hardness.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Urea's applications span agricultural fertilisation and industrial resin and chemical manufacturing.

Field 01

Nitrogen Fertiliser

The dominant solid nitrogen fertiliser worldwide, applied directly to soil or used in fertigation and blended NPK formulations.

Field 02

Urea-Formaldehyde Resins

Reacted with Formaldehyde to produce resins used in wood-based panel adhesives (particleboard, MDF, plywood) and moulding compounds.

Field 03

Melamine Production

Feedstock for melamine manufacture, itself used in melamine-formaldehyde resins and laminates.

Field 04

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue)

High-purity Urea is used to produce diesel exhaust fluid for selective catalytic reduction emission-control systems.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Urea's reactivity centres on its two amide groups, which participate in condensation reactions with aldehydes (notably Formaldehyde) and undergo hydrolysis to release ammonia in soil and aqueous systems.

Soil Hydrolysis

Urea dissolves and, in soil, undergoes hydrolysis (catalysed by the enzyme urease) to release ammonium and bicarbonate ions.

Methylol-Urea Formation

In resin manufacturing, Urea condenses with Formaldehyde to form methylol-urea intermediates.

Polymer Network Formation

Further condensation builds the urea-formaldehyde polymer network used in adhesive and moulding applications.

05 / RELATED BUILDING BLOCKS

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Not Classified

No significant hazard under standard GHS criteria.

Dust Precaution

Avoid prolonged inhalation of fine dust.

Low Acute Hazard

Essentially non-toxic at typical exposure levels.

Non-Combustible

Does not support combustion.

Respiratory Protection

Dust mask recommended during bulk handling.

Eye Protection

Safety glasses recommended.

Skin Protection

Standard gloves sufficient.

Storage

Dry, well-ventilated area, sealed packaging.

Urea is a low-hazard material handled under standard industrial dust-control and housekeeping practices. Normal PPE (dust mask, safety glasses) is recommended during bulk loading and handling, with particular attention to moisture control given Urea's hygroscopic nature and tendency to cake if exposed to humidity.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Shelf Life12 - 18 months in sealed packaging
Storage TempAmbient, dry conditions
ContainerPP/PE bags · bulk bags · bulk vessel

Store in sealed, moisture-resistant packaging in a dry, well-ventilated area. Urea is hygroscopic and will cake or degrade in prill/granule quality if exposed to humidity or temperature fluctuation during storage.

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is Urea used for?+
It is primarily used as a solid nitrogen fertiliser (46% N), as a feedstock for urea-formaldehyde and melamine resins used in wood adhesives, and in diesel exhaust fluid for emission control systems.
02What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
Standard fertiliser-grade prilled and granular Urea at 46% nitrogen content, and technical grade with lower biuret specification for resin manufacturing applications.
03What is the difference between prilled and granular Urea?+
Prilled Urea is formed by spraying molten urea in a prilling tower, producing smaller, rounder particles; granular Urea is formed by layering in a granulation drum, producing larger, harder particles with lower dust and better storage characteristics, often preferred for bulk blending and long-distance shipping.
04Is Urea hazardous?+
No, Urea is classified as a low-hazard material under standard GHS criteria, though standard dust-control practices are followed and moisture protection is important to maintain product quality.
05How is Urea packed for export?+
In 50 kg PP bags, 1 MT jumbo bags, or bulk vessel loading for large-volume agricultural or industrial buyers, all with moisture-protective packaging.
06What is biuret and why does it matter?+
Biuret is a by-product formed during urea synthesis through over-dehydration; high biuret content can be phytotoxic to certain sensitive crops and can also affect the performance of urea-formaldehyde resins, so it is controlled to grade-specific limits.
07What is the typical lead time for export orders?+
Standard lead time is 2 - 3 weeks from order confirmation, depending on destination, grade and order volume.
08Does Chelora Chemicals provide a Certificate of Analysis?+
Yes, every shipment includes a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis covering nitrogen content, biuret, moisture and other relevant parameters.
09Can Urea cake during storage?+
Yes, Urea is hygroscopic and can cake if exposed to humidity; sealed, moisture-resistant packaging and dry storage conditions are essential to maintain free-flowing quality.
10Is technical-grade Urea different from fertiliser-grade Urea?+
Yes, technical grade typically specifies lower biuret content and tighter purity tolerances suited to resin manufacturing, while fertiliser grade is optimised for nitrogen content and agronomic performance.
