01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Ammonia is, and why buyers source it

Ammonia is the primary industrial route for fixing atmospheric nitrogen into a usable chemical form, underpinning global fertiliser production and serving as the starting feedstock for Urea, nitric acid, and a wide range of nitrogen-based industrial chemicals.

Anhydrous Ammonia is supplied as a liquefied gas under pressure or refrigeration for direct fertiliser application and chemical feedstock use, while aqueous ammonia solutions serve water treatment, cleaning formulation and smaller-volume industrial applications where handling pressurised gas is impractical.

Ammonia is both a finished direct-application fertiliser (in regions with suitable application infrastructure) and the essential precursor for Urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and nitric acid production.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Ammonia is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Ammonia is manufactured via the Haber-Bosch process, reacting nitrogen (from air separation) with hydrogen (typically from steam reforming of natural gas) over an iron-based catalyst at high pressure and temperature.

Reactor pressure, temperature and catalyst condition are controlled to optimise conversion, with unreacted gases recycled through the synthesis loop and product ammonia separated by refrigeration/condensation.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Ammonia's applications span fertiliser production, chemical feedstock use, and industrial refrigeration.

Field 01

Fertiliser Production

Direct-application fertiliser in suitable infrastructure and the essential feedstock for Urea, ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate fertiliser manufacture.

Field 02

Nitric Acid Manufacture

Oxidised to produce nitric acid via the Ostwald process, itself a precursor to further nitrogen chemicals.

Field 03

Industrial Refrigeration

Widely used as a refrigerant in large-scale industrial and food-processing cold storage systems due to its high thermodynamic efficiency.

Field 04

Chemical Feedstock

Starting material for a broad range of nitrogen-containing industrial chemicals, including amines and nitrile compounds.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Ammonia's reactivity centres on its basic nitrogen atom, which readily accepts protons and forms coordinate bonds, underlying its roles in acid-base chemistry and as a nucleophile in downstream synthesis.

Synthesis Gas Compression

Synthesis gas (N2 + H2) is compressed and passed over catalyst in the ammonia synthesis loop.

Condensation & Separation

Ammonia is condensed and separated from unreacted gases, which are recycled.

Storage or Downstream Reaction

Liquid anhydrous ammonia is stored under pressure/refrigeration or further reacted to produce downstream nitrogen chemicals.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

H221

Flammable gas.

H314

Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.

H331

Toxic if inhaled.

H400

Very toxic to aquatic life.

Respiratory Protection

Self-contained breathing apparatus for high concentrations.

Eye Protection

Full-face chemical splash goggles required.

Skin Protection

Cryogenic/chemical-resistant gloves and clothing.

Storage

Pressurised or refrigerated vessel, away from ignition sources.

Anhydrous Ammonia is a toxic, corrosive, flammable gas requiring pressurised or refrigerated containment, specialised transfer equipment, and full respiratory and skin protection during handling. Chelora Chemicals ships Ammonia only to buyers with verified receiving infrastructure (pressurised storage or refrigerated tankage) appropriate to the supplied form, with full safety documentation accompanying every shipment.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Shelf LifeIndefinite under proper pressurised/refrigerated storage
Storage TempAmbient under pressure or refrigerated to -33°C
ContainerPressurised ISO tank / refrigerated vessel

Store anhydrous ammonia in pressure-rated or refrigerated vessels designed for the purpose, away from ignition sources and incompatible materials. Aqueous ammonia solutions are stored in sealed, corrosion-resistant containers with adequate ventilation.

Certificate of Analysis

Batch-wise assay (by titration/GC), colour and relevant physical constants, issued against the agreed specification so your QC team can check it, not just file it.

Doc 02

Safety Data Sheet

GHS-format SDS in English covering hazard classification, handling, storage, first-aid and spill response for the exact grade of Ammonia shipped.

Doc 03

Technical Data Sheet

Reference physical and chemical properties, recommended storage and typical applications, for internal circulation to your process or R&D teams.

Doc 04

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is Ammonia used for?+
It is the primary feedstock for Urea and other nitrogen fertilisers, a precursor for nitric acid, a widely used industrial refrigerant, and a general chemical feedstock for nitrogen-containing compounds.
02What forms does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
Anhydrous Ammonia as liquefied gas under pressure or refrigeration, and aqueous ammonia solution at standard commercial concentrations.
03Is Ammonia dangerous to transport?+
Yes, anhydrous ammonia is a toxic, corrosive and flammable gas requiring specialised pressurised or refrigerated transport and handling infrastructure, and shipments are arranged only with buyers who have verified appropriate receiving facilities.
04How is Ammonia shipped for export?+
Anhydrous grade ships via pressurised ISO tank or refrigerated vessel depending on volume and buyer infrastructure; aqueous grade ships in standard corrosion-resistant drums or IBC.
05What is the difference between anhydrous and aqueous Ammonia?+
Anhydrous Ammonia is pure NH3 as a liquefied gas under pressure or refrigeration, while aqueous ammonia is NH3 dissolved in water (ammonium hydroxide) at a lower effective concentration, used where handling pressurised gas is impractical.
06What is the typical lead time for export orders?+
Standard lead time is 3 - 4 weeks from order confirmation, reflecting the specialised logistics required for anhydrous ammonia shipment.
