01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, why its fluorine is so much more useful than the chlorine it replaces, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene (4-fluoronitrobenzene) is a benzene ring carrying a fluorine and a nitro group in the 1,4 (para) relationship. Although fluorine is generally a poor leaving group in nucleophilic aromatic substitution for most aryl halides, the opposite is true once the ring carbon is strongly activated by an adjacent or para nitro group: fluoride's high electronegativity makes the carbon-fluorine bond's transition state unusually favourable for the addition step of the SNAr mechanism, so an activated aryl fluoride like this one reacts with nucleophiles considerably faster than the equivalent activated aryl chloride.

With a melting point close to ambient temperature, it is supplied as a pale yellow liquid or a low-melting solid depending on storage temperature. It is only slightly soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, and like other nitroaromatics is handled as a toxic material under full MSDS guidance rather than a benign commodity liquid.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

Catalytic hydrogenation of the nitro group gives 4-fluoroaniline, a precursor to the agricultural fungicide fluoroimide and, further downstream, to pharmaceutical actives such as parafluorofentanyl-class intermediates. The activated fluorine is also displaced directly by phenoxide to give a mononitrodiphenyl ether, a building block used in further diphenyl-ether agrochemical and specialty chemistry.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene in technical grade (≈98% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99%+) for applications sensitive to residual chloride or isomeric carryover. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene is manufactured by the Halex (halogen-exchange) process: Para Nitro Chloro Benzene is reacted with potassium fluoride, typically in a polar aprotic solvent at elevated temperature, displacing the chlorine with fluoride to give this fluoronitrobenzene and potassium chloride as a by-product. The reaction proceeds because the nitro-activated ring carbon makes the addition-elimination SNAr pathway favourable for fluoride specifically, a reactivity pattern distinctive to activated aryl halides rather than aryl halides in general.

After the halogen-exchange step, the crude product is separated from residual potassium salts and solvent, washed, and distilled to the required purity before packing.

Why the Halex route matters to buyers

Direct nitration of fluorobenzene is not the practical industrial route to this compound; starting from the already-available Para Nitro Chloro Benzene and converting its chlorine to fluorine via Halex is the standard, scalable way to reach this and other activated fluoronitroaromatics, which is why buyers will see the same Halex logic recur across the fluorinated materials in our range.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene is consumed mainly as a feedstock for fluoroaniline chemistry and nitrodiphenyl ether synthesis. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Fungicide Intermediate (Fluoroimide Route)

Hydrogenation to 4-fluoroaniline feeds the synthesis of the agricultural fungicide fluoroimide.

Field 02

Pharmaceutical Intermediate Chemistry

4-Fluoroaniline derived from this material is also used further downstream in certain pharmaceutical-intermediate synthesis routes.

Field 03

Nitrodiphenyl Ether Synthesis

Direct displacement of the activated fluorine by phenoxide gives a mononitrodiphenyl ether building block used in diphenyl-ether agrochemical chemistry.

Field 04

Fine-Chemical & Specialty Synthesis

Used more broadly as a reactive fluoronitroaromatic building block for SNAr-based fine-chemical synthesis.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

The activated fluorine is an unusually fast-reacting SNAr handle, while the nitro group is the reduction handle for fluoroaniline chemistry. Reaction classes below cover the main ways this material is converted downstream.

Reduction to 4-Fluoroaniline

Catalytic hydrogenation converts the nitro group to a primary amine while the fluorine, generally stable under reducing conditions, is preserved, giving 4-fluoroaniline.

Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution at Fluorine

The nitro-activated fluorine is displaced by nucleophiles such as phenoxide, alkoxides or amines, often under milder conditions than the equivalent chlorine would require, owing to fluoride's favourable SNAr transition-state energetics once the ring is activated.

Nitrodiphenyl Ether Formation

Reaction with a phenol or phenoxide salt displaces the fluorine to give a mononitrodiphenyl ether, used in further diphenyl-ether agrochemical synthesis.

Further Functionalisation of the Fluoroaniline

4-Fluoroaniline, once formed, can be further acylated or otherwise derivatised in fungicide and pharmaceutical intermediate chemistry.

Signal word

Danger — GHS06 acute toxicity pictogram applies.

This compound is toxic if swallowed or inhaled, harmful in contact with skin, a skin sensitiser, and may cause organ damage through prolonged or repeated exposure; impervious gloves, full eye/face protection and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling, with no skin contact. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureCool, ambient
ContainerOriginal sealed packaging
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
Keep Away FromStrong oxidizers, strong reducing agents
Beyond Shelf LifeRe-assay before use

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and ignition sources, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing and strong reducing materials. Its melting point sits close to typical ambient temperature, so a container may arrive as a liquid, a solid, or a mix of both; warm gently and mix before sampling if a batch has partially crystallised unevenly. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay and colour before use.
