01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Ortho Anisidine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Ortho Anisidine (2-methoxyaniline) places a methoxy group ortho to the amino group on the benzene ring, giving a reactive aromatic amine used for decades as a dye and pigment intermediate. We want to flag something precisely, because the two major classification systems covering this compound use very similar-looking labels for very different things: the EU's harmonised CLP Annex VI entry lists it as Carc. 1B (H350, presumed to have carcinogenic potential for humans, based largely on animal bladder-tumour data), while IARC separately evaluated it and placed it in Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans). "1B" and "2B" are not the same scale and should never be read as if one confirms or contradicts the other at face value -- we state both, on their own terms, rather than merge them into a single simplified label.

Commercially, Ortho Anisidine is a well-documented intermediate in azo-dye and organic-pigment manufacture, including several Pigment Red and Pigment Orange grades built from its diazotised form, and it has historical use as an intermediate toward certain antioxidants and pharmaceuticals, though we focus here on its dominant, best-documented dye/pigment role.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply Ortho Anisidine itself as a dye and pigment intermediate. We do not manufacture or supply the finished dyes or pigments made from it.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Ortho Anisidine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Ortho Anisidine is made industrially by reduction of ortho-nitroanisole, itself typically made by methylation of ortho-nitrophenol or by nitration of anisole followed by isomer separation.

The nitro-to-amine reduction step uses catalytic hydrogenation or a chemical reducing agent, converting the nitro group cleanly to the amine while leaving the methoxy group and ring untouched.

The crude product is purified by distillation under reduced pressure, since it darkens readily on exposure to air and light, and is tested for purity and colour before packing under conditions that limit further oxidative discoloration.

Two classification systems, two different numbers -- kept separate on purpose

We want to state this as plainly as we can: the EU's Carc. 1B classification and IARC's Group 2B evaluation are not the same scale, and the shared digit between "1B" and "2B" is coincidental, not a sign the two systems roughly agree. EU Carc. 1B means substances presumed to have carcinogenic potential for humans, based substantially on animal evidence -- here, documented bladder tumours in rodent studies. IARC Group 2B means possibly carcinogenic to humans, a category IARC applies where evidence is limited in humans and less than sufficient in animals, or sufficient in animals but the broader picture is still judged as only "possible." These are two independent regulatory judgments on the same underlying data, not two readings of the same scale, and we report each on its own terms.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Ortho Anisidine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Azo-Dye & Pigment Intermediate

A well-documented intermediate in azo-dye and organic-pigment manufacture, including several Pigment Red and Pigment Orange grades built from its diazotised form.

Field 02

General Fine-Chemical Intermediate

Used more broadly in fine-chemical synthesis wherever this specific methoxy/amino aromatic substitution pattern is required.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Ortho Anisidine's chemistry centres on the amino group's diazotisation, the reaction that drives nearly all of its documented dye and pigment applications.

Diazotisation

The amino group is converted to a diazonium salt with nitrous acid, the key activating step for essentially all downstream azo-dye and pigment coupling chemistry.

Azo coupling

The diazonium salt couples with a naphthol, acetoacetanilide, or similar coupling partner to build the finished azo-dye or pigment structure.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Ortho Anisidine against its near relatives

Ortho Anisidine and Para Anisidine are the two anisidine isomers in this part of our range, differing in hazard profile as much as in substitution pattern.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

H302

Harmful if swallowed.

H317

May cause an allergic skin reaction.

H350

May cause cancer.

H410

Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

Signal word

Danger

Ortho Anisidine carries a harmonised EU CLP Annex VI entry: Carc. 1B (H350, presumed to have carcinogenic potential for humans, based substantially on documented rodent bladder-tumour studies), alongside Acute Tox. 4 (H302), Skin Sens. 1 (H317), and Aquatic Acute/Chronic 1 (H410). IARC separately evaluated this substance and placed it in Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans) -- a different scale and a different evaluation body from the EU's Carc. 1B category; the shared "B" is coincidental and the two should not be read as confirming one another. We present both findings on their own terms.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Shelf Life12 months, unopened
Storage Temp15–25 °C, protected from light

05Is EU Carc. 1B the same as IARC Group 2B?+
No, and we want to be precise about this rather than let the shared letter suggest otherwise. These are two different classification systems run by two different bodies, each independently evaluating evidence that is substantially drawn from animal bladder-tumour studies rather than confirmed human epidemiology. We report each finding separately rather than merge them into one simplified label.
06Is the cancer evidence here based on human studies?+
The documented tumour findings behind both the EU and IARC classifications come substantially from animal (rodent) studies. We state this plainly because it matters for how the classification should be read, rather than let either label imply a confirmed human-epidemiology basis it doesn't have.
