01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Nylon 66 is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the resin's two-monomer chemistry, how its exact 1:1 monomer stoichiometry sets it apart from Nylon 6, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Nylon 66 is a polyamide built from two monomers in precise 1:1 stoichiometric balance — a dicarboxylic acid (adipic acid) and a diamine (hexamethylenediamine) — condensed together to form the same type of repeating amide linkage found in every nylon, but arranged along a backbone with a longer, more regularly spaced repeat unit than Nylon 6's single-monomer structure. That longer, more symmetric repeat unit packs more tightly into crystalline regions, which is the structural reason Nylon 66 carries a notably higher melting point, greater stiffness and better heat resistance than Nylon 6.

At room temperature it is supplied as a translucent to opaque white pellet, semi-crystalline once cooled. Like Nylon 6, it is markedly hygroscopic and its finished-part properties shift measurably between the dry-as-moulded and moisture-equilibrated states, a characteristic of the amide backbone shared by every commercial nylon regardless of which monomers built it.

Where it fits in the value chain

Nylon 66's higher heat resistance and stiffness relative to Nylon 6 make it the preferred nylon wherever an application runs hotter or needs greater dimensional stability under load: automotive radiator end tanks, engine covers and connectors operating in the under-hood environment, electrical connectors subject to reflow-soldering temperatures, and industrial gears and bearings running under continuous load. It also remains an important textile fibre, historically the original nylon fibre, used in carpet, hosiery and technical textile applications, often in direct competition with Nylon 6 fibre on cost and specific property requirements.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers Nylon 66 across injection-moulding, fibre/yarn and glass-fibre-reinforced grades, differentiated mainly by relative viscosity and additive package. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering relative viscosity, moisture content and, for reinforced grades, glass content.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Nylon 66 is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Nylon 66 is produced by condensation polymerisation of adipic acid with hexamethylenediamine. The two monomers are first combined in water in a precisely controlled 1:1 molar ratio to form nylon salt (hexamethylenediammonium adipate), a crystallisable intermediate that is itself a useful quality-control checkpoint, since its formation confirms the exact stoichiometric balance needed for the final polymer's molecular weight to build up correctly. The nylon salt solution is then concentrated and heated under pressure, driving off water as polycondensation proceeds and the amide linkages form along the growing chain.

Because the reaction is a step-growth condensation between two different monomers rather than a ring-opening of a single one, achieving a high molecular weight depends critically on that initial 1:1 stoichiometric balance: even a small excess of either monomer caps chain growth early and limits the achievable molecular weight, which is why nylon salt formation and careful monomer metering are treated as the single most important process control point in Nylon 66 manufacture.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Nylon 66 is consumed across automotive under-hood parts, electrical connectors, industrial gears and bearings, and textile fibre. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Automotive Under-Hood Parts

Glass-fibre-reinforced grades injection-moulded into radiator end tanks, engine covers, air intake manifolds and connectors operating in the high-temperature engine-bay environment.

Field 02

Electrical & Electronic Connectors

Moulded into connectors and components that must withstand reflow-soldering temperatures and maintain dimensional stability under thermal cycling.

Field 03

Industrial Gears & Bearings

Moulded into gears, bearings, bushings and wear components where strength, stiffness and continuous-load heat resistance exceed what Nylon 6 reliably offers.

Field 04

Textile & Carpet Fibre

Melt-spun into continuous filament and staple fibre for carpet, hosiery and technical textiles, the original commercial nylon fibre application.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the resin is typically converted forward

The two-monomer, tightly crystallising amide structure governs almost all of Nylon 66's further processing behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished part.

Drying

The hygroscopic resin is dried to a specified low moisture level before melt processing, since residual moisture can cause hydrolytic chain scission and surface defects during moulding or spinning.

Injection Moulding

Melted and injected into a mould cavity under pressure, typically with glass-fibre reinforcement, to form automotive, electrical and industrial parts needing stiffness and heat resistance.

Fibre Spinning

Melted resin is extruded through fine spinnerets and drawn to orient the polymer chains, producing continuous filament or staple fibre for carpet and technical textile applications.

Glass-Fibre Compounding

Chopped glass fibre is melt-compounded into the resin at a controlled loading to raise stiffness and heat deflection temperature for demanding automotive and electrical applications.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Low Hazard Profile

Not classified as hazardous under GHS in solid pellet form.

Combustible Solid

Combustible; pellets and especially fine dust can support combustion once ignited.

Dust Control

Minimise accumulation of polymer dust/fines, which present a greater ignition risk than pellets.

Molten Handling

Processing equipment handles the resin molten at comparatively high temperature given its higher melting point; standard hot-surface and fume-extraction precautions apply at the extruder.

PPE Standard

Standard gloves and eye protection are sufficient for routine handling of pellets.

Moisture Sensitivity

Not a safety hazard, but a critical process-quality factor; always dry before processing per the technical data sheet.

Signal word

Not classified; refer to the batch MSDS for grade-specific guidance.

This product has a low hazard profile in its solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The principal handling precautions concern combustible-dust accumulation from fines generated during conveying and bagging, and standard hot-surface precautions during melt processing at the resin's comparatively high processing temperature. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureAmbient, dry, indoor
ContainerMoisture-barrier bags / 1,000 kg jumbo bags
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened, moisture-barrier packaging
Keep Away FromMoisture ingress, heat sources
Beyond Shelf LifeAlways re-dry before processing

Store in a dry, ambient-temperature warehouse in the original moisture-barrier packaging, since Nylon 66 is markedly hygroscopic and will absorb atmospheric moisture steadily once the packaging is opened. Keep bags sealed until immediately before processing, and always pre-dry per the technical data sheet regardless of how recently the material was delivered. Re-check relative viscosity on material held past its retest date before use.

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is Nylon 66 used for?+
Predominantly automotive under-hood parts, electrical and electronic connectors, industrial gears and bearings (most often glass-fibre-reinforced), and textile/carpet fibre.
02What is Nylon 66 made from?+
Two monomers in precise 1:1 molar ratio: adipic acid (a dicarboxylic acid) and hexamethylenediamine, HMDA (a diamine), condensed together to form the repeating amide linkage — the '66' in its name refers to each monomer contributing six carbon atoms.
03How is Nylon 66 produced?+
By first combining adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine in exact 1:1 stoichiometric ratio to form nylon salt, then concentrating and heating this salt under pressure to drive off water and build up the polymer by step-growth condensation.
04What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply injection-moulding, fibre/yarn and glass-fibre-reinforced grades across standard relative-viscosity ranges. Each grade ships with a certificate of analysis covering relative viscosity, moisture content and, for reinforced grades, glass content.
05Is Nylon 66 hazardous?+
No; it has a low hazard profile in solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The main handling precautions are combustible-dust control from fines generated during conveying and the process-quality requirement to dry the resin before melt processing.
06Why does Nylon 66 have a higher melting point than Nylon 6?+
Because its two-monomer repeat unit is longer and more symmetric than Nylon 6's single-monomer repeat unit, the chains of Nylon 66 pack more tightly into an ordered crystalline structure, and that greater degree of crystalline order is what raises its melting point, stiffness and heat resistance above Nylon 6's — a difference rooted in monomer architecture rather than in any difference in how the resin is processed.
07What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 25 kg moisture-barrier bags on pallet, with 1,000 kg jumbo bags or bulk hopper truck shipment available for larger volumes.
08How long does delivery take?+
Typical lead time is two to three weeks plus transit, depending on whether the grade is ex-stock or made to order and your destination port. A firm date is confirmed in the written quotation.
09Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
10Do you supply the adipic acid and HMDA monomers and the Nylon 6 alternative as well?+
Yes, we supply both Adipic Acid and Hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), the exact monomer pair this resin is condensed from, and Nylon 6 (PA6), the related single-monomer polyamide.
