Para Anisidine

C7H9NO Molar mass 123.15 g/mol

Para Anisidine is the positional isomer of Ortho Anisidine, and we want to state a correction plainly up front: a carcinogenicity (H350) statement for this compound circulates on some general-reference sources, but it is contradicted by the pharmacology/toxicology literature (INCHEM), ACGIH, and German MAK data we checked, and we do not publish it. The hazard this compound's data actually and consistently supports is haematological -- methaemoglobin formation -- the same mechanism that makes aniline itself a recognised blood hazard.

01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Para Anisidine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Para Anisidine places its methoxy group para to the amino group, giving a solid (unlike the liquid ortho isomer) with distinct hazard data. We checked a Wikipedia-sourced H350 ("may cause cancer") claim against INCHEM's toxicological review, ACGIH's documentation, and German MAK Commission data, and found the carcinogenicity claim is not supported by the weight of that evidence -- we do not publish it on this page. What is consistently documented instead is this compound's capacity to cause methaemoglobinaemia (a blood disorder reducing oxygen-carrying capacity), the same toxicological mechanism documented for aniline and several of its simpler derivatives, and that is the hazard driver we foreground here.

Commercially, Para Anisidine is documented as a coupling component and intermediate in azoic/Naphthol AS dye chemistry and in antioxidant synthesis, built on the same diazotisable amino group as its ortho isomer, with the methoxy group's para position giving it a distinct coupling behaviour and colour range from the ortho isomer.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply Para Anisidine itself as a dye and fine-chemical intermediate. We do not manufacture or supply the finished dyes or antioxidant products made from it.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Para Anisidine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Para Anisidine is made industrially by reduction of para-nitroanisole, itself made by methylation of para-nitrophenol or by nitration of anisole followed by isomer separation from the ortho isomer.

The nitro-to-amine reduction step uses catalytic hydrogenation or a chemical reducing agent, converting the nitro group to the amine while leaving the methoxy group and ring untouched.

The crude product is purified by crystallisation, taking advantage of its solid state at ambient temperature (unlike the liquid ortho isomer), then dried and tested for purity and colour before packing.

A carcinogenicity claim we checked and did not publish

We take this kind of correction seriously, because getting it wrong in either direction has real consequences. A carcinogen (H350) classification for this compound appears on some general-reference sources. We cross-checked it against INCHEM's toxicological review, ACGIH documentation, and German MAK Commission data, and found that weight of evidence does not support publishing an H350 statement for this compound. We instead report, consistently across the sources we checked, its documented capacity to cause methaemoglobinaemia -- a real and well-supported hazard, distinct from and not to be confused with carcinogenicity.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Para Anisidine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Azoic Dye Coupler

Documented as a coupling component in azoic/Naphthol AS dye chemistry, built on its diazotisable amino group.

Field 02

Antioxidant & Fine-Chemical Intermediate

Used as an intermediate in antioxidant synthesis and more broadly in fine-chemical synthesis requiring this specific methoxy/amino substitution pattern.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Para Anisidine's chemistry centres on the amino group's diazotisation, the key activating step for its documented azoic-dye coupling applications.

Diazotisation

The amino group is converted to a diazonium salt with nitrous acid, the key activating step for azoic-dye coupling chemistry.

Azo coupling

The diazonium salt couples with a naphthol or similar coupling partner, with the para-substitution pattern giving a distinct colour range from the ortho isomer.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Para Anisidine against its near relatives

Para Anisidine and Ortho Anisidine are the two anisidine isomers in this part of our range, differing meaningfully in both physical state and hazard profile.

H373

May cause damage to organs (blood) through prolonged or repeated exposure.

H410

Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.

Signal word

Warning

No harmonised EU CLP Annex VI carcinogen entry was located for this substance, and we deliberately do not publish a carcinogenicity (H350) statement that circulates on some general-reference sources, having checked it against INCHEM's toxicological review, ACGIH documentation, and German MAK Commission data and found it unsupported by the weight of that evidence. The classification above instead reflects the consistently documented haematological hazard mechanism (H373, blood/methaemoglobinaemia) shared with aniline and related simple anilines, alongside general acute-toxicity statements. IARC has not evaluated this substance.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Shelf Life18 months, unopened
Storage Temp15–25 °C, protected from light
