2,3,4-Trifluoro Nitro Benzene
The most heavily fluorinated nitroaromatic in our range, supplied by Chelora Chemicals as the Halex fluorination product of 2,3,4-Trichloro Nitro Benzene — an important fluoroquinolone pharmaceutical intermediate — exported from Indonesia with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What 2,3,4-Trifluoro Nitro Benzene is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, how it is reached from its trichloro precursor, and its documented role as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic intermediate.
2,3,4-Trifluoro Nitro Benzene is a benzene ring carrying three fluorine atoms at the 1, 2 and 3 positions and a nitro group at position 4, making it the most heavily fluorinated nitroaromatic in our range. All three fluorines sit on the ring relative to a single nitro group, giving a substitution pattern that mirrors the trichloro starting material it is made from, simply with chlorine replaced by fluorine at every position.
At room temperature it is typically supplied as a clear, light yellow to orange liquid once melted, though it can solidify on cooling depending on ambient conditions. It is only slightly soluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents, and like other nitroaromatics is handled as a material requiring full PPE and MSDS-guided handling rather than a benign commodity liquid.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
This compound is cited as an important pharmaceutical intermediate feeding fluoroquinolone antibiotic synthesis, in the same downstream family as ofloxacin, levofloxacin, lomefloxacin and rufloxacin, continuing the synthesis chain that begins with its trichloro precursor. It is also used as a research chemical in its own right, including in studies of nitroaromatic biotransformation under environmental (methanogenic) conditions.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 2,3,4-Trifluoro Nitro Benzene in technical grade (≈97% assay) for standard industrial synthesis, and high-purity grade (99%+) for pharmaceutical-intermediate applications sensitive to colour or residual chloride carryover. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How 2,3,4-Trifluoro Nitro Benzene is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
2,3,4-Trifluoro Nitro Benzene is manufactured by the Halex (halogen-exchange) fluorination of 2,3,4-Trichloro Nitro Benzene with potassium fluoride, typically in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with phase-transfer catalysts (such as tetrabutylammonium bromide and tetrabutylammonium fluoride) and the assistance of ultrasound, run at temperatures up to around 120°C. Patent literature reports this route can be driven to very high conversion under optimised conditions.
After the halogen-exchange step, the crude product is separated from residual potassium salts, catalyst and solvent, washed, and distilled to the required purity before packing.
Why phase-transfer catalysis and ultrasound matter here
Displacing three chlorines in sequence with fluoride is considerably more demanding than a single Halex step, since each successive substitution becomes somewhat less favourable as the ring's electronics shift; phase-transfer catalysis and ultrasound assistance are used industrially to drive the reaction to completion at a practical temperature and reaction time.
Industries and processes that use it
2,3,4-Trifluoro Nitro Benzene is consumed mainly as a pharmaceutical intermediate feeding fluoroquinolone antibiotic synthesis, with further volumes going into nitroaromatic research. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Fine-Chemical & Research Applications
Used as a research chemical in fine-chemical synthesis calling for a heavily fluorinated nitroaromatic building block.
Environmental Biotransformation Research
Studied in published research on nitroaromatic biotransformation pathways under environmental (methanogenic) conditions.
Specialty Dye & Agrochemical Intermediate Chemistry
Its reduction products are used in some specialty dye and agrochemical intermediate synthesis requiring a trifluorinated aniline building block.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The nitro group is the reduction handle, while the three fluorines, each activated to a different degree by their position relative to the nitro group, offer sequential or selective SNAr chemistry. Reaction classes below cover the main ways this material is converted downstream.
Reduction to the Trifluoroaniline
Catalytic hydrogenation converts the nitro group to a primary amine while the fluorines are generally preserved, giving a trifluoroaniline intermediate that continues the fluoroquinolone synthesis chain.
Selective Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution
Individual fluorines, activated to differing degrees by their position relative to the nitro group, can be selectively displaced by nucleophiles under controlled SNAr conditions, a tool used in building the final antibiotic ring system.
Ring-Closure Chemistry Toward the Antibiotic Core
Later steps in the fluoroquinolone synthesis chain use the activated ring fluorines in a controlled cyclisation sequence to build the characteristic bicyclic quinolone core.
Research Biotransformation Pathways
Under environmental and microbial conditions studied in the research literature, this compound undergoes defluorination and reduction pathways relevant to environmental fate assessment.

Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled.
Causes skin irritation.
Causes serious eye irritation.
May cause respiratory irritation.
Impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.
Supplied as a liquid at typical ambient temperature; use closed-system transfer where practical to limit splash exposure.
Avoid any release to drains or waterways as a general nitroaromatic precaution.
Warning — GHS07 harmful and irritant pictograms apply.
This compound is harmful by all three common exposure routes and causes skin and eye irritation along with possible respiratory irritation; impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection are recommended for routine handling. As it is typically supplied as a liquid, closed-system transfer is recommended to limit splash exposure. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and ignition sources, in tightly closed original packaging, segregated from strong oxidizing and strong reducing materials. Ensure containers are well sealed to prevent vapour loss. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay and colour before use.
