01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What LLDPE is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the resin's comonomer-modified linear structure, how that structure improves film strength, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Linear Low-Density Polyethylene is a copolymer of ethylene with a small proportion of a higher alpha-olefin comonomer — commonly 1-butene, 1-hexene or 1-octene — introduced specifically to create short, uniform, controlled side branches along an otherwise linear backbone. Unlike LDPE's irregular, free-radical-generated branching, LLDPE's branches are deliberately placed by the comonomer and catalyst system, giving a more linear chain overall that packs into a denser, more uniform crystalline structure than LDPE while still disrupting packing enough to keep density below HDPE's range.

At room temperature it is supplied as a translucent white pellet. That controlled branching gives LLDPE a notably better balance of tensile strength, puncture resistance and tear strength at a given gauge than LDPE, which is the primary reason it has displaced a meaningful share of LDPE's traditional film volume.

Where it fits in the value chain

LLDPE's improved mechanical strength per unit gauge allows film converters to down-gauge — use a thinner film for the same performance — which has made it the dominant resin in stretch film, heavy-duty sacks, and general-purpose blown film where cost-per-bag economics reward thinner gauge without sacrificing strength. Rotomoulding grades, typically using 1-hexene or 1-octene comonomer for better low-temperature impact resistance, are used for tanks and other hollow moulded parts.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers LLDPE in butene-, hexene- and octene-comonomer grades across blown film, cast film and rotomoulding melt-index ranges. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering melt index, density and comonomer type.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How LLDPE is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

LLDPE is produced by low-pressure copolymerisation of ethylene with a higher alpha-olefin comonomer — most commonly 1-butene, 1-hexene or 1-octene — over a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene coordination catalyst, in gas-phase, solution or slurry reactor systems. The catalyst inserts ethylene and comonomer units into the growing chain in a controlled sequence, placing a short alkyl branch (ethyl, butyl or hexyl, depending on comonomer) at each comonomer insertion point along an otherwise linear backbone, in contrast to the random, free-radical branching of LDPE.

The comonomer type and content are the principal levers used to tune the finished resin's density, crystallinity and mechanical property balance: a hexene or octene comonomer, at the same content, typically gives better toughness and lower haze than a butene comonomer, which is why premium film grades more often specify the heavier comonomers. Unreacted ethylene and comonomer are separated and recycled, and the resin is pelletised with the appropriate additive package.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

LLDPE is consumed across stretch film, heavy-duty sacks, general-purpose blown film and rotomoulded parts. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Stretch & Shrink Film

Blown into stretch wrap and shrink film for pallet and bundle wrapping, valued for its puncture and tear resistance at thin gauge.

Field 02

Heavy-Duty Sacks & Liners

Converted into heavy-duty industrial sacks and liners where strength at reduced gauge lowers material cost per unit.

Field 03

General-Purpose Packaging Film

Blown or cast into bags, pouches and general packaging film, often blended with LDPE to balance clarity and strength.

Field 04

Rotomoulded Tanks & Parts

Hexene- or octene-comonomer grades rotomoulded into tanks, containers and other hollow parts needing good low-temperature impact resistance.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the resin is typically converted forward

The linear, comonomer-controlled branching structure governs almost all of LLDPE's further processing behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished part.

Film Blowing

Extruded through an annular die and inflated into a thin-walled bubble; LLDPE's strength allows thinner gauge than LDPE at equivalent performance.

Cast Film Extrusion

Extruded through a flat die and quenched on a chilled roll for high-clarity cast film and stretch-wrap applications.

Blending with LDPE

Blended with LDPE in varying ratios to balance LLDPE's strength with LDPE's clarity and processability for general-purpose film.

Rotational Moulding

Powder or pellet is tumbled and heated inside a rotating mould, melting and fusing against the mould wall to form a seamless hollow part.

05 / RELATED BUILDING BLOCKS

LLDPE against other polyethylene grades we supply

Buyers sourcing LLDPE often also need a comonomer feedstock, or a different polyethylene density grade for another part of the line. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Low Hazard Profile

Not classified as hazardous under GHS in solid pellet form.

Combustible Solid

Combustible; pellets and especially fine dust can support combustion once ignited.

Dust Control

Minimise accumulation of polymer dust/fines, which present a greater ignition risk than pellets.

Molten Handling

Processing equipment handles the resin molten; standard hot-surface and fume-extraction precautions apply at the extruder.

PPE Standard

Standard gloves and eye protection are sufficient for routine handling of pellets.

Thermal Decomposition

May emit irritant fumes if processed well above normal processing temperature or involved in a fire.

Signal word

Not classified; refer to the batch MSDS for grade-specific guidance.

This product has a low hazard profile in its solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The principal handling precautions concern combustible-dust accumulation from fines generated during conveying and bagging, and standard hot-surface precautions during melt processing. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureAmbient, dry, indoor
Container25 kg bags / 1,000 kg jumbo bags
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened
Keep Away FromUV exposure, moisture, heat sources
Beyond Shelf LifeRe-check melt index before processing

Store in a dry, ambient-temperature warehouse, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, since prolonged UV and heat exposure can degrade the resin's additive package and processing behaviour. Keep bags sealed to prevent moisture pickup and contamination with other resin grades. Re-check melt index and moisture content on material held past its retest date before processing.

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is LLDPE used for?+
Predominantly stretch and shrink film, heavy-duty sacks and liners, general-purpose packaging film (often blended with LDPE), and rotomoulded tanks and parts.
02What comonomers are used to make LLDPE?+
Most commonly 1-butene, 1-hexene or 1-octene, copolymerised with ethylene under Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysis to introduce short, controlled branches along an otherwise linear chain; heavier comonomers such as hexene and octene generally give better toughness and clarity at equal content than butene.
03How is LLDPE produced?+
By low-pressure copolymerisation of ethylene with a higher alpha-olefin comonomer over a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene coordination catalyst, in gas-phase, solution or slurry reactor systems.
04What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply butene-, hexene- and octene-comonomer LLDPE across blown film, cast film and rotomoulding melt-index ranges. Each grade ships with a certificate of analysis covering melt index, density and comonomer type.
05Is LLDPE hazardous?+
No; it has a low hazard profile in solid pellet form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The main handling precaution is combustible-dust control from fines generated during conveying.
06Why has LLDPE displaced some LDPE film volume?+
Its comonomer-controlled linear branching gives notably better tensile, puncture and tear strength at a given gauge than LDPE's irregular branching, which lets converters down-gauge film while keeping the same performance — an economic advantage that has shifted volume from LDPE to LLDPE in stretch film and heavy-duty sacks especially.
07What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 25 kg bags on pallet, with 1,000 kg jumbo bags or bulk hopper truck shipment available for larger volumes.
08How long does delivery take?+
Typical lead time is two to three weeks plus transit, depending on whether the grade is ex-stock or made to order and your destination port. A firm date is confirmed in the written quotation.
09Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
10Do you supply the other polyethylene grades and comonomer feedstock as well?+
Yes, we also supply LDPE and HDPE, the other principal polyethylene density grades, plus 1-Butene, a common LLDPE comonomer feedstock.
