Cyclohexylamine

C6H13N Molar mass 99.17 g/mol

Cyclohexylamine is the best-documented of the alicyclic/alkylamine family in this part of our range, confirmed by a current manufacturer as a boiler-water corrosion inhibitor and separately documented as a rubber-accelerator intermediate — a reproductive-toxicant (H361f) classification we disclose plainly, alongside its separate, well-known identity as a human/animal metabolite of the sweetener cyclamate, which we take care not to present as a product "use."

01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Cyclohexylamine is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Cyclohexylamine is a primary amine attached to a saturated six-membered cyclohexane ring, structurally distinct from the aromatic anilines elsewhere in our catalogue despite a superficially similar name. Its EU-harmonised CLP Annex VI classification (Index 612-050-00-6) includes H361f — suspected of damaging fertility — alongside flammability, acute-toxicity, and corrosive statements, and we disclose that reproductive-toxicant classification plainly rather than soften it.

We want to separate two genuinely different facts about this compound that are easy to conflate: first, its confirmed industrial applications — a current US manufacturer's own technical brochure documents cyclohexylamine's use in boiler feed-water treatment (neutralising acidic compounds, forming a protective metal-oxide film, scavenging oxygen, and preventing scale), and independent sources document its separate role as a precursor to sulfenamide-class rubber vulcanisation accelerators, plus general industrial applications in insecticide intermediates, plasticiser manufacture, dry-cleaning soap and dyestuff components, and gas-absorbent/air-purification use. Second, and entirely separately, cyclohexylamine is a well-documented human and animal metabolite of the artificial sweetener cyclamate — a toxicological and regulatory fact about how the body processes cyclamate, not an industrial "use" of this chemical, and we keep that distinction clear rather than present it alongside our commercial applications.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply Cyclohexylamine itself as a water-treatment and rubber-chemical intermediate. We do not manufacture or supply finished boiler-treatment formulations, rubber accelerators, or any pharmaceutical product made using it.

Grades we supply

99%+ technical grade is the standard commercial offering.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Cyclohexylamine is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Cyclohexylamine is made industrially by complete catalytic hydrogenation of aniline over a cobalt- or nickel-based catalyst, saturating the aromatic ring while leaving the amino group untouched.

An alternative documented route is catalytic amination of cyclohexanol with ammonia, used by some producers as a second commercial process.

The crude product is purified by distillation and tested for purity, colour, and odour before packing, consistent with the tight specification demanded by its water-treatment and rubber-chemical end uses.

Two separate facts we keep from blurring into one

It would be easy to let this compound's well-known toxicological identity as a cyclamate metabolite bleed into its description as an industrial product, so we want to keep the two apart deliberately. Its documented commercial uses — boiler-water treatment, confirmed directly by a current manufacturer, and rubber-accelerator intermediate chemistry, confirmed independently — are what this page describes as the product we sell. Its identity as a human/animal metabolite of the sweetener cyclamate is real, well documented, and worth knowing, but it describes a metabolic fact about a different substance (cyclamate) in the body, not a use of cyclohexylamine itself, and we present it as toxicological background rather than blend it into our applications list.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Cyclohexylamine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Boiler Feed-Water Corrosion Inhibitor

Confirmed directly by a current manufacturer's technical brochure: neutralises acidic compounds, forms a protective metal-oxide film, scavenges oxygen, and prevents scale in boiler systems.

Field 02

Rubber Accelerator Intermediate

An independently documented precursor to sulfenamide-class rubber vulcanisation accelerators.

Field 03

General Industrial Intermediate

Documented applications include insecticide-intermediate, plasticiser-manufacturing, dry-cleaning soap and dyestuff component, and gas-absorbent/air-purification uses.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Cyclohexylamine's chemistry centres on its basic primary amine nitrogen, which both scavenges acidic species in its water-treatment role and reacts with sulfur-chemistry reagents to build rubber-accelerator structures.

Acid neutralisation & film formation

The basic amine neutralises acidic species in boiler water and contributes to a protective metal-oxide film on internal surfaces, the basis of its corrosion-inhibitor role.

N-Sulfenylation (rubber-accelerator chemistry)

Reaction with sulfur-chemistry reagents builds sulfenamide-class structures used as rubber vulcanisation accelerators.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Cyclohexylamine against its near relatives

Cyclohexylamine, Hexylamine and Octylamine are the alicyclic/primary amines in this part of our range, with Cyclohexylamine carrying the most specifically documented industrial applications of the three.

Signal word

Danger

Cyclohexylamine carries a harmonised EU CLP Annex VI entry (Index 612-050-00-6, independently confirmed against two separate primary-type sources): Flam. Liq. 3 (H226), Acute Tox. 4 oral (H302), Acute Tox. 4 dermal (H312), Skin Corr. 1B (H314), and Repr. 2 (H361f) -- signal word Danger. Some individual supplier SDS additionally list Eye Dam. 1 (H318), a stricter dermal-toxicity tier (H311), and an aquatic chronic statement (H412) as supplementary, non-harmonised self-classification; we show the Annex VI entry itself as the legally binding EU classification and flag these as commonly seen additions rather than part of the harmonised entry. IARC has not evaluated this substance (despite its toxicological notoriety as the cyclamate metabolite, no IARC Group classification exists for cyclohexylamine itself). US ACGIH lists a 1990-dated TLV of 10 ppm TWA; OSHA has not established a PEL. UN transport: UN 2357, Class 8, Subsidiary risk 3, Packing Group II.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE
