1,3-Propanediamine
The three-carbon straight-chain diamine supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a fast-reacting aliphatic diamine used as an epoxy curing agent, chelating-agent intermediate and polymer building block — exported from Indonesia as a liquid in drums or ISO tanks with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What 1,3-Propanediamine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its role as a short-chain, fast-reacting diamine, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
1,3-Propanediamine is a short, three-carbon straight-chain diamine: two primary amine groups separated by a single methylene spacer at the centre of the chain. The short backbone keeps both amines close together and highly reactive, giving the molecule fast reaction kinetics in condensation, addition and chelation chemistry compared with longer-chain diamines.
At room temperature it is a colourless to pale-yellow, hygroscopic liquid with a sharp amine odour, fully miscible with water and most polar organic solvents. It is a strong base and absorbs carbon dioxide and moisture readily from air, so containers are kept tightly closed between uses.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
1,3-Propanediamine is used as a fast-curing aliphatic hardener for epoxy resin systems, as a building block for chelating agents and complexing compounds, and as an intermediate in pharmaceutical, agrochemical and specialty-surfactant synthesis. Its short, symmetrical backbone also makes it a useful monomer for polyamide and polyurea specialty polymers where a compact diamine spacer is required.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 1,3-Propanediamine in technical grade (≈99% assay) for general curing-agent and intermediate use, and high-purity grade (99.5%+) for pharmaceutical and chelating-agent synthesis sensitive to colour and trace-impurity content. Both grades are supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How 1,3-Propanediamine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
1,3-Propanediamine is manufactured industrially by catalytic hydrogenation of malononitrile, in which both nitrile groups of the two-carbon dinitrile are reduced to primary amines over a Raney nickel or cobalt catalyst under hydrogen pressure, typically with ammonia added to suppress secondary-amine formation: NC–CH₂–CN + 4 H₂ → H₂N(CH₂)₃NH₂. An alternative route hydrogenates 3-aminopropionitrile, itself made by Michael addition of ammonia to acrylonitrile, to the same diamine.
Why hydrogenation of a dinitrile or aminonitrile is standard
Both routes build the amine from readily available, large-scale petrochemical feedstocks — acrylonitrile and malononitrile are produced at significant industrial scale for other downstream uses — and both deliver the diamine in a single or two-step catalytic hydrogenation that is well understood and controllable for colour and purity.
Industries and processes that use it
1,3-Propanediamine is consumed across epoxy curing, chelating-agent manufacture and specialty organic synthesis, where its short, fast-reacting diamine backbone is the main draw. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Epoxy Resin Curing Agent
Used as a fast, low-viscosity aliphatic hardener for ambient-cure epoxy coatings, adhesives and flooring systems.
Chelating Agent Intermediate
A key building block for nitrogen-based chelating and complexing agents used in water treatment and metal-finishing chemistry.
Pharmaceutical & Agrochemical Intermediate
Supplies the short diamine spacer required in a range of active-ingredient and agrochemical synthesis routes.
Polyamide & Polyurea Monomer
Used as a compact diamine monomer wherever specialty polyamide or polyurea chemistry calls for a three-carbon spacer.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The two terminal primary amines, held close together by the short three-carbon backbone, govern almost all of this molecule's further reaction chemistry. Reaction classes below account for most of the ways 1,3-Propanediamine is converted into a finished product or intermediate.
Epoxide Ring-Opening (Curing)
Each terminal amine opens an epoxide ring in turn, crosslinking epoxy resin into a thermoset network at a faster rate than longer-chain diamines.
Chelate Ring Formation
Both nitrogen atoms coordinate to a metal centre, forming a five-membered chelate ring that is the basis of its use in chelating-agent synthesis.
Reductive Amination & Acylation
Reacts with aldehydes, ketones or acyl chlorides to build more complex nitrogen-containing intermediates for pharma and agrochemical routes.
Salt Formation
Forms stable, crystalline salts with mineral and organic acids, a step often used to purify or formulate downstream intermediates.

Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Flammable liquid and vapour.
Harmful if swallowed.
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
May cause respiratory irritation.
Impervious gloves, chemical splash goggles or a face shield, and suitable respiratory protection are the baseline for routine handling.
Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame; ground and bond containers during transfer.
Keep containers tightly closed between uses to limit moisture and CO₂ pickup.
Danger — GHS02 flammable, GHS05 corrosive and GHS07 harmful pictograms apply.
This compound is a flammable liquid that causes severe skin burns and eye damage, may cause respiratory irritation, and is harmful if swallowed. It must be handled with impervious gloves, splash-proof eye protection and suitable respiratory protection, and kept away from heat and open flame. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, strong oxidizing agents and strong acids, in tightly closed original packaging. As the product is hygroscopic, minimise exposure to humid air during transfer. If a batch is held past its retest date, re-check assay, colour and water content before use.
