01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

This compound carries three different functional handles on one small aromatic ring -- an amino group, a phenolic hydroxyl, and a chlorine substituent -- positioned so the amino and hydroxyl groups sit adjacent (ortho) to each other while the chlorine sits para to the hydroxyl. That adjacency between the amino and hydroxyl groups is what gives this compound its documented coupling behaviour in oxidative dye chemistry, parallel in principle to how the phenylenediamines elsewhere in our range behave in the same chemistry, but with a distinctly different colour-development profile contributed by the phenolic group and the chlorine substituent.

It is documented as a coupling component in oxidative hair-dye formulations (used alongside a primary intermediate such as a phenylenediamine to build the final colour), and more generally as an intermediate in azo-dye and photographic-chemical synthesis, where its combination of amino, hydroxyl, and halogen substituents is a useful building block for further functionalisation.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol itself as a dye and photographic-chemical intermediate. We do not manufacture or supply finished hair-dye formulations, dyes, or photographic products made using it.

Grades we supply

98% and 99% grades are both seen across the trade.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol is made industrially by reduction of the corresponding nitro-chlorophenol precursor (2-nitro-4-chlorophenol), converting the nitro group to an amino group while leaving the hydroxyl and chlorine substituents untouched.

The reduction step uses catalytic hydrogenation or a chemical reducing agent under controlled conditions to achieve clean, selective conversion of the nitro group.

The crude product is purified by crystallisation and packed promptly under conditions that limit air and light exposure, since aminophenols of this type are prone to oxidative darkening on standing.

A three-substituent structure worth describing precisely

We want to be precise about this compound's substitution pattern rather than describe it loosely: the amino and hydroxyl groups are adjacent (ortho) to one another, while the chlorine sits on the ring position para to the hydroxyl group -- hence the name "para-chloro-ortho-amino-phenol," read relative to the phenol's hydroxyl group as the reference point. Getting this geometry right matters, because it's the ortho amino/hydroxyl adjacency, not the chlorine's position by itself, that drives this compound's documented oxidative-coupling dye chemistry.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Oxidative Hair-Dye Coupling Intermediate

Used as a coupling component in oxidative hair-dye formulations, typically paired with a primary intermediate such as a phenylenediamine to build the finished colour.

Field 02

Azo-Dye & Photographic-Chemical Intermediate

Used more generally as an intermediate in azo-dye and photographic-chemical synthesis, where its combined amino/hydroxyl/chlorine substitution pattern is a useful building block.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol's chemistry centres on the oxidative coupling behaviour enabled by its adjacent amino and hydroxyl groups, the same general reaction family that drives oxidative hair-dye chemistry across the dye-intermediate products in our range.

Oxidative coupling

Under oxidative conditions, in combination with a primary intermediate such as a phenylenediamine, this compound couples to form the coloured products used in oxidative hair-dye formulations.

Diazotisation/azo coupling

The amino group can be diazotised and coupled to build azo-dye structures, consistent with its use as a general dye-chemistry intermediate.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol against its near relatives

Para Chloro Ortho Amino Phenol, 2,4-Toluenediamine and the phenylenediamines elsewhere in our range are related by their shared role as primary intermediates and couplers in oxidative dye chemistry.

Signal word

Warning

No harmonised EU CLP Annex VI entry was located for this specific compound. The classification above reflects general irritant/sensitiser self-classification consistent with its character as an aminophenol used in oxidative dye chemistry, a class of compounds broadly associated with skin-sensitisation potential. IARC has not evaluated this substance. We recommend checking the SDS shipped with your specific lot as the governing document for compliance purposes.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Shelf Life18 months, unopened
Storage Temp15–25 °C, protected from light
ContainerFibre drums, tightly sealed

Store in a cool, well-ventilated area protected from light and air, consistent with its tendency to darken on exposure and its skin-sensitiser classification. PPE including skin and eye protection is recommended for all handling.

Yes. It carries the GHS signal word Warning with the hazard statements listed in the hazard section of this page. It should be handled with appropriate PPE and in line with the safety data sheet supplied with each shipment.
05Is this compound a dye by itself?+
No -- it functions as a coupling component, typically paired with a primary intermediate such as a phenylenediamine, rather than as a standalone colourant. The finished colour comes from the coupling reaction between the two components, not from this compound alone.
06Why does the name have three parts -- "para chloro," "ortho amino," and "phenol"?+
Because the molecule has three substituents on one ring, and the name describes each one's position relative to the phenol's hydroxyl group: the amino group is ortho (adjacent) to the hydroxyl, and the chlorine is para (opposite) to the hydroxyl. We state this precisely because the ortho amino/hydroxyl adjacency specifically is what drives the compound's coupling chemistry.
