N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine
N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine is the secondary-amine relative of N,N-Diethyl-m-Toluidine -- carrying one N-H and one N-ethyl group rather than two N-ethyl groups -- supplied as a dye and rubber-chemical intermediate.
What N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine retains one N-H on the amino nitrogen, which makes it more reactive toward further N-alkylation or acylation than its fully N,N-dialkylated relatives, while keeping the same electron-rich, methyl-activated aromatic ring.
It is documented as a dye intermediate -- consistent with the broader m-toluidine family's established role in azo-dye synthesis -- and as a building block in rubber-chemical and fine-chemical synthesis, where the free N-H allows further functionalisation that the fully dialkylated relatives in our range cannot undergo. We did not find a single specific named end-product documented for this exact compound and report it at the level of general intermediate use that the sources support.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
We supply N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine itself as a dye and fine-chemical intermediate. We do not manufacture or supply any finished dye or rubber-chemical product made using it.

How N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine is made by mono-N-ethylation of m-toluidine with ethanol or ethyl halide under controlled, sub-stoichiometric conditions designed to favour the mono-alkylated product over the N,N-diethyl relative.
Reaction conditions and ethylating-agent stoichiometry are tuned specifically to limit over-alkylation, since the commercially required product here is the mono-substituted secondary amine, not the tertiary amine made elsewhere in our range.
The crude product is purified by distillation to separate it from unreacted m-toluidine and the over-alkylated N,N-diethyl by-product, then tested for purity and colour before release.
A mono- vs. di-alkylation distinction worth stating clearly
This compound and N,N-Diethyl-m-Toluidine elsewhere in our range are easy to conflate, since both start from the same m-toluidine and both carry ethyl substituents. The difference is deliberate and process-controlled: this product retains one N-H, made by limiting ethylation to a single substitution, while the other product is fully N,N-diethylated. We keep that distinction explicit on both pages.
Industries and processes that use it
N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Dye Intermediate
Used as an intermediate in azo-dye synthesis, consistent with the broader m-toluidine family's established role in dye chemistry.
Rubber & Fine-Chemical Intermediate
Used as a building block in rubber-chemical and fine-chemical synthesis, where the free N-H allows further N-functionalisation.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine offers both the electron-rich aromatic ring common to this family and a free N-H available for further N-alkylation or N-acylation, a reactive handle its fully dialkylated relatives lack.
Further N-alkylation or N-acylation
The remaining N-H can be alkylated or acylated to build more complex intermediates, a reactive handle not available on the fully N,N-disubstituted relatives in our range.
Electrophilic substitution (dye chemistry)
The electron-rich ring undergoes electrophilic substitution reactions relevant to azo-dye intermediate synthesis.
N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine against its near relatives
N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine and N,N-Diethyl-m-Toluidine are the two m-toluidine-derived amines in this part of our range, differing in degree of N-alkylation.

Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide rather than a specification sheet.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Harmful if swallowed.
Harmful in contact with skin.
Causes skin irritation.
Causes serious eye irritation.
Harmful if inhaled.
Warning
No harmonised EU CLP Annex VI entry was located for this specific compound. The classification above reflects general irritant/harmful self-classification consistent with its character as a substituted aniline. IARC has not evaluated this substance.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from strong oxidisers and acids, consistent with its character as a secondary aromatic amine. Keep containers tightly sealed.
How it ships from Indonesia
Standard packing and export terms for this product. Confirm exact figures against your order — they vary slightly by destination and quantity.
What travels with every batch
Specification is agreed before the purchase order, not discovered on arrival. Every shipment of N-Ethyl-m-Toluidine leaves with a documented, checkable paper trail.
Certificate of Analysis
Batch-wise assay (by GC), isomer purity, melting point range and moisture, issued against the agreed specification so your QC team can check it, not just file it.
Safety Data Sheet
GHS-format SDS in English covering hazard classification, handling, storage, first-aid and spill response for the exact grade shipped.
Technical Data Sheet
Reference physical and chemical properties, recommended storage and typical applications, for internal circulation to your process or R&D teams.
Certificate of Origin
Confirms Indonesian origin for customs clearance and any preferential-duty claim at your destination port.
Dangerous Goods Declaration
UN packing group, classification and shipper's declaration prepared ahead of loading so documentation never holds up customs.
Third-Party Inspection
Independent pre-shipment inspection and re-sampling can be arranged on request, at your cost, for buyers who require it as a matter of policy.
